This is very helpful! Thank you! I look forward to growing brassicas in the fall where I won't have to worry about this pest.

      Hi Jessica!
Yes, sometimes its easier to just work around nature rather than investing the extra effort trying to fight it...
Other Brassicas can certainly be done in the spring around here, as long as you are really good about your timing.
Choosing early varieties and using row covers can help avoid the butterflies and hard frost on the front end.
      Best,

As a kid I thought the white butterflies in the garden were cute. As an adult, I have learned they are *not* cute. They create more work + problems. Thanks for the great video Mark! 👍⭐️🙂

last spring i had so many issues with these cabbage loopers on my kale, i was spraying BT on the weekly, but this year i havent had any cabbage loopers yet so i havent had to spray BT yet, its been very nice. the weather this year has been less hot but also less wet because of not as much rain, not sure if that plays into why I haven't seen any this year yet. love watching your videos keep it up!

@@marksgardenlife5971 I was referring to Kiera. I just say pup no matter the age. I comment a lot on videos to help the channels engagement and algorithm as much as I can as a subscriber. Please don’t feel you have to reply to all of my comments. Have a great weekend and happy gardening 👩🏻‍🌾

    • @marksgardenlife5971

      Hi Gina!
When you said pup, I thought of Holly right away. Kiera was at the hospital again today (Sunday 6-13) and the x-rays are showing she has cancer that is moving fairly fast, so it was a rough day today. She has at best, a few weeks. A very sad day today with some very difficult decisions to come. That is very kind of you to ask about Kiera. She is such a sweetheart and she's been in a few of the videos this spring watching over me as she always has. If you would have told me a few months ago she was going to be dying in June, I would have never believed it. She is only 8 years and 4 months old right now. Kiera almost lost her life a year and 8 months ago when she had a tumor growing on her spleen and that had to be removed. At the time, the doctors said it was a 80% chance it was cancer and she was lucky enough it wasn't, so we have had another year and 8 months that we may have not had with her. It's been a rough few years for Rotties around here. Emily who was just 5 days short of her third birthday got killed last March and Annie is actually her niece. That was just a horrible experience to go through last year. And I love to respond to comments! It's so nice talking to people from all over the country and the world as well. Gina, thank you!

Good afternoon Mark, had to laugh,as you are talking about the cabbage white laying eggs on the Kale there was two of them right behind you going about there business 😆 Cabbage Whites are a real big problem for us, you can find a dozen of them at a time wanting to lay eggs and this goes on and on all summer.....saying that l saw some last week and thought hear we go.So l make tunnels out of fleece.lve seen them get through the tiniest of holes by folding there wings right back and tucking them in,interesting to watch. All the very best 🌱🌱🌱🇬🇧uk

      Hi Joyce!
Yes, when they show up, they don't waste any time haha.
I intend to make tunnels like you do for other brassicas, just need to experiment a little with it.
That's interesting about them finding the holes!...
It's amazing how nature always seems to find a way.
The very best to you as well from across the pond!

I have the feeling the BT product is a substance the bacteria produce - not the living bacteria itself. If it would, you could just take off a part of this liquid in the bottle and breed your on bacteria in a jar as you did with the radishes and never need to buy the product again. But don't think that will work.
BTW, what consistency will the radishes get after fermenting: do they stay crisp or will they become mushy?

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there Henning!
BT Toxins are produced by the living bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis)... I guess you could continue culturing them somehow, that's an interesting idea!
The radishes will change in texture, sort of like how pickled cucumbers do...
they will not get mushy, but won't be just as crisp as when raw.
      Best,
      -Mark

      Hi Amin,
I thought so too but it seems much smaller than a robins egg...
I should have held it up to the camera to show the size...
After investigating, I think it's an eastern Bluebird's egg.
We do have a lot of them around here...

Those are my favorite butterflies. I know they are harmful but so are most butterflies that have a host plant. I can't spray for them. Actually, I was at a fruit stand this summer and I bought Fennel plants only because they were filled with Swallowtail caterpillars.

Really interested in the fermentation of radishes. So do you then just use the brine and toss the radishes? Is there a recipe you can post? Thx

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there!
I fill the jar with radishes, then pour the brine over the top... Then weigh the radishes down... The key is to keep everything submerged, and to leave enough air space (over 1") at the top of the jar so that when you "burp" the jar, it doesn't "boil over".

      Hi Garrett!
That seems to make the most sense to me...
It was under the one kale plant so Maybe the Bird landed to eat it, but was being chased (by mama bird?) and abandoned it's prize.
Or maybe the bird dropped it like you say, and it landed on the Kale plant which cushioned the fall?
I feel like I'm in high school physics again haha.
