Theory, the "booster" is a Federation transwarp coil, but it takes up the entire aft of the ship because it's less advanced than the borg version and the transforming is for radiators due to it getting hot when in use.
Personally…I am in love with the USS Protostar. My inner child adores the mysterious third unfolding nacelle/experimental drive system. The nacelle trails and largely-windowed bridge are quite nice, at least to me. _Can’t wait_ to see it in action.
It's a really cool looking ship. I don't really mind the JJ Verse elements in the nacelles. Honestly, the JJ Verse ship designs were actually pretty damn nice. It was just the Enterprise that didn't work for me. But the Kelvin, and all those ships we briefly see in ST2009 before they warp to Vulcan, looked really nice.
You have to think about the target audience and what the imagery is supposed to accomplish. This for kids K - 12, and their parents. Kids have a basic understanding of locomotion and beams from the nacelles show them that the objects are what makes it go forward. Additionally, most of those intro shots are there to give a sense of speed and direction. Earlier treks were forced to have a planet backdrop or a moving starfield to convey motion, however the shots were tight and lacked the scale of space. You're more than likely correct on the protostar being the experimental engine. That's an easy concept for a kid to grasp "the engine is powered by a mini star" - with the gimmick of the ship changing modes being a key visualizer. Gotta remember, when we were kids we might have been intrigued by the technobabble and the strange concepts - but for other kids they switched the channel to something else. This is a good opportunity to get a new generation on board with a great series.
With the Dauntlessy looking deflector, I thought it was slipstream but then I remembered the Pathfinder Project talking about hyper-subspace, so wondered if the booster nacelle aided in generating a hyper-subspace field that surpasses standard warp.
Definitely like the idea of a "slingshot drive" it would make sense if it was designed to help Voyager's crew get home and would explain the Janeway hologram too. But we'll see.
It looks kind of like Slipstream when it's firing on all cylinders. Maybe that's what the third engine is for. It's an NX, so constructing it like that allowed them to bypass some problems they weren't able to solve yet, kind of like how the warp stabilizer in the NX Enterprise allowed them to bypass the problems they were having for Warp 5.
i assume they unlock new features of the ship in every episode until its fully functional and the intro sequence is also the final scene of the season when they travel into the alpha quadrant
I love your idea about it opening worm hole. I think that’s also likely because if you notice that they have regular warp and they also have this other kind with the third thing
Although I think the wormhole theory is far more likely. I would love my head cannon idea that this ship was built to create "subspace highways" where other warp capable ships can travel along the same route later with greater efficiency maybe even undoing some of the subspace damage of previous generations, but it would either only be able to do this in short bursts/slower/have to be massively stripped down to preform this one function. So this would be a trailblazing ship opening up new paths into the future etc etc theming.
Maybe those "lightstreams" the nacelles are dragging, were some kind of idea to help the kids focus on the ship? Sometimes its hard to visually follow those action animes. Hope Protigy will not be "shot" that way.
Instead of shuttles they might have something like the captains yacht that detaches from the ship. The ship looks like intrepid, nova class hybrid with Kelvin nacelles not a fan of the movable nacelles but in upright position it looks good.
Definitely love the idea of a wormhole drive. As Keiko said in her school. “Most wormholes are naturally occurring or the result of dangerous warp drive malfunctions. Such wormholes tend to oscillate wildly across time and space, making them useless for normal interstellar commerce”. A la the Motion Picture, controlling that effect seems like a natural area of research and experimentation. And the deflector being the god system that can do just about anything is over done in Trek, would make way more sense to be creating a wormhole from the nacelles, since it is already literally their job to bend and warp space.
JJ ship designs looked the way they did due to advanced borg tech (for the time period) let’s not forget the prime universe made the same technological leap, just later
I like this design of the USS Protostar. The third drive type does not matter, only that it gives a sense of speed. At one point in the episode, when the kid was on the hull, it looks like a phaser cannon was stored there. For myself this is actually something that I would design in Star Trek.
Prodigy really surprised me. I loved the first episode and can't wait to see where things go. As for the ship, she's a beauty. I honestly don't mind the light trail too much as it's a cool looking effect. So if it's in the show, I personally don't think it'll be a huge deal.
Shows aimed at children and not all kids have great eye sight. The light coming out of the end of the nacells will help a lot of kids understand the ship is moving fast or at all if they're having trouble seeing or understanding star fields behind the ship.
I like the ship very much and I really like the transforming nacelles; a real homage paid to Voyager in that regard also considering that Janeway is apart of it.
I got Quantum Slipstream from the design of the ship, mainly due to the deflector and the "booster" is a early design for a Quantum Slipstream Generator
Evening Captains, love the design of the ship... it’s obviously an NX (experimental). The deflector “dish” is something new and a little puzzling, but if the third “nacelle” is a trans warp booster maybe or whatever it is, then a new much more robust deflector would be needed. I did think perhaps it was creating not exactly a wormhole (along the lines that Atlantis used in the final episode of Stargate Atlantis), but perhaps something more like a quantum tunneling drive? Maybe it’s driving the ship even further into sub space, maybe sub-sub space, just a shade above wormhole equivalent. So it’s not nearing instantaneous travel, but since it’s “deeper” into sub space, creating a tunneling effect, you get the post warp speed boost but pre wormhole? Just a thought
farscape found a way to balance a super fast FTL drive against enemies with standard FTL. a starburst(leviathan FTL drive) is considerably faster than conventional FTL(i think along the lines of a quick jump travelling the equivalent of 10 hours of FTL), but you can easily be a few lightyears off your target and you need a lot of cooldown time. this also creates an interesting cat and mouse game where the crew of such a ship would have some mandatory time to explore between jumps, and in the meantime give the enemy chasing them a chance to catch up. so you'd constantly have pressure for the crew to collect resources and do maintenance between jumps, and be ready to jump again when the enemy arrives. although this specific mechanic probably won't be used here, as having conventional FTL(warp) alongside a jump drive would eliminate the concerns with a cooldown.
Well and as of last night, now we know. No explanation as to how it works yet. But it certainly makes it look cool! I love the wake of light being compressed at the front of the bow. Light the supersonic cone of a jet or bullet bit made of compressed light.
I’m guessing it’s a new propulsion system, possibly spun off from slipstream, or a visual reboot of slipstream, just as they reboot what warp and transporting look like all the time. I’m also guessing that the ship was built using tech that Voyager brought back and was launched as an experiment to revisit some of the worlds that Voyager had noted, hence the Janeway holo as a way to show a familiar face. Something obviously went wrong and the ship crashed. Maybe there was no crew, or maybe some of the crew were enslaved, explaining why a Tellarite is in the Delta Quadrant. Sometimes I think that new propulsion systems are a Starfleet obsession. Every 20-50 years they come up with some new type of test bed design, usually just a prototype. It sort of works, but not well enough, and the whole thing gets shelved until someone comes up with a new design a generation later. We’ve had the Crossfield, the Excelsior, a long-distance transporter, a displacement wave, the Kosinski experiments, the Cochrane shuttle, slipstream, etc. I prefer no light streams at warp, but I could also totally see them being an artistic choice for an animated series.
if you look at the edge of the saucer section it seems to have a black strip running around the edge could possibly be a phaser strip because its a small ship it might have just one phaser strip instead of a phaser strip on the top and bottom of the saucer
My thoughts on the size of the ship is what if it was to meet up with voyager , be disassembled to upgrade voyager so the whole crew could make it home.
Fast-forward 6 months after the season wraps up: the protostar drive is pretty much that experimental unique drive system cmdr Foley supposed it was. The ship is small, but loaded with features. This show ended up being the kind of trek that weve been missing. The showrunners actually get star trek and are introducing a new young audience to the spirit of the franchise in interesting ways. The alien kids thing is... well... different... but I think that's a great vehicle for explaining the trek universe, concepts, and what starfleet and the federation are to a new audience. My two cents - adjusted for inflation. o7
It really looks like a JJverse Rhode Island to me, but I don't mean that in bad way. Would be cool if some of the tech on it is inspired by stuff encountered during an encounter between the prime and JJ universes.
If you follow the curves it looks like it breaks up into two, could explain why the nacelles drop down too the lower part, perhaps too alter the warp field, but I’m not that good tech wise, so what do you think?
Can we all agree that the Kelvin universe did a slightly better job in modernizing the TOS era nacelles (although i prefere red glow...) than the boxy discovery ones? So, why should it be a bad thing to draw from design clues found in the kelvin timeline? Some people (in the comments) are so comitted to get upset about every single aspect of the 2009 movies it`s painful to read sometimes.
I called them out on that goofy little steamer behind the nacelles on twitter, based on the response from the show's producer that's not just intended for the intro.
You guys are forgetting the Voyager Crashed into that Ice Planet episode and the NX-01 Dauntless. Also, remember Star Trek Armada??? Nice big cargo-doors on that saucer it's sides.
The Phoenix seemed to have Bussard collectors, but presumably the red, flickery domes at the front of the nacelles purely served some function as part of the warp engines as that ship was only designed to fly for a matter of minutes…
*it is the **_responsibility_** of this channel to take their toy aesthetic nonsense, & head-cannon it so it makes @ least **_potentially_** enough sense, so that we dont have to!* & we appreciate it. -JC
I think the 3rd nacelle is probably a quantum slipstream stabilizer. also, warp trails have been a thing since at least TNG, even if they were never visible then. also, also, the more I look at the ship, the more it resembles either
The ship doesn't have an obvious impulse drive, so, I think they were really angling on putting them at the back of the nacelles for that rocketship look. The spinal engine is probably what they'll use to emphasize actual warp travel.
The bridge is pretty big so the ships bigger than it looks. I'd imagine its transwarp and janeway and seven designed the prototype full of tech voyager picked up on its way back. It will have weapons, a shuttle pod and possibly a holographic crew like Picard. Wonder if they fuel up from stars like destiny.
In a sense it is a booster engine as it’s there to go faster, but I doubt it’s like a booster rocket. Prototype engine of some sort for sure. I’m really looking forward to seeing this show!
The new ship is looking amazing. It has a very slipstream feel about it. Anyone else get this vibe? I have a suspicion that its based off the slipstream system that plowed Voyager into that iceplanet. I mean the system worked to some degree... The third "nacel" could be a slipstream training wheel to help stabilize the slipstream effect like Voyager was unable to. It would also play into the rules of design as its not there to generate a warp field (which requires pairs) more add support during the slipstream effect. I mean that is if its slipstream at all. If the third is merely training wheels it could apply to transwarp as well. Again its not regular warp hence the pairing wouldn't matter. Having the Janeway hologram suggests alot. She has experience with a few areas and techs that would solidify why she was used. I can't imagine they would throw new tech purposely towards the delta quad as they wouldn't want the chance of the Borg remnants picking it up. But she has expertise with the Borg, Slipstream and Transwarp so any of those things could easily be explained.
i just got an epiphany.... sort of.... This ship is basically a miniature version of the Odyssey class from STO. The overall shape fits the ships almost to a T. There are differences of course but the saucer and the eng section screams Odyssey but without the double necks. just my two cents.
It's borrowing enough Kelvin timeline design cues, that I'm pretty certain (especially since we see the whole "third engine" thing) that the plasma trails WILL be in the show.
With the bussard collectors maybe they are not bussard collectors but small deflectors for normal warp idk if that would make sense but it's just a theory
I can see maybe John Eaves designed this baby. It generally has a US Air Force experimental or testbed fighter jet feel to it. The only thing I don't really like are the bussard collectors, I think the whole ship would look even more sleek if they were kinda cone shaped and orange colored.
i think it looks pretty nice, treky and modern at the same time, not something thats easily achieved imo. and while i get that its unpossible to meet everyones taste, i think they did a pretty good job to get as close to that as possible ^^ and compared to the U.S.S. Ceritos from Lower Decks (very obviously a satiric take on Starfleet Ships while still being clearly recogniseable) this one looks like it could work for real in a show >_
I think the third "nacelle" is either one of two things- the Federation was trying to use their own technological understanding of FTL in order to create a quantum slipstream drive loosely based off of the dauntless ship from voyager's logs OR perhaps the transworp experiments are just getting another iteration in the technology's evolution. Either way, it's not something we've seen before and we have to take it as such snd just see where it goes. (Pun intended)
The blind jump mechanic seems plausible because it would explain why they found it in the delta quadrant and why Starfleet don't use or reference this drive. Because it's to unpredictable and a failed experiment. Even the light beams can make sense if you take the name Protostar into account. Star = light. Maybe when creating/using the protostar/wormhole it generates a lot of light that needs to be vented.
The nacelles movig up and down of the Voyager was an early defence against ripping holes in space-time so perhaps if this ship is that much faster it could rip a larger one due to its setup. So how about its design being that reason perhaps? I know they fixed that by the time of the Ent E so perhaps the energy output of this could be that much greater it still needs to move the nacelles to use the middle engine?
@@slighter the warp coils on the inside has a single curved coil coming off it the JJ prize has that single curved coil line around the the top front of nacelles if you look carefully and the nacelles look bulky from the front same as JJ,s the trek yards guys say that too But also see discovery details in there too
@@slighter most likely the shape theres most likely a combination of many other things in adition to the kelvin timeline/jjverse such as the Dauntless/arrowhead/prometheus design.
Looks cool, a buffet of trek tech tropes. I can imagine the feds sending out a drone ship with an experiemntal drive. I don't get why it has a Janeway holo on it. Do all fed ships have a Janeway holo now? like how Voyager and Enterprise E had the same EMH. When a ship is lost and has no crew does the Janeway holo pop up to conscript random paserbys into Fed service?
My idea would that this is a prototype scout ship, design to go quickly to the delta quadrant, nose around and then head back home. It has a janeway training hologram because Starfleet needed experts in the delta quadrant but couldn't expect voyager crew to start giving lectures every week to train up other parts of starfleet . Plus there a lot of stuff Starfleet might want to keep secret or on a need to know basis, Omega Molecule. This could all be handle by the Janeway training hologram.
The name Proto Star is the name of the mini proto Star powering the star drive so it's not matter/Anti matter as for the third nacelle I think it's a Transe warp Drive. In search for Spok the Excelsior had a Trans Warp till Scotty sabotaged it maybe Star Fleet decided to put more work into it. Maybe the third nacelle is a Warp ten Engine
it kinds of looks like the ship from flight of the navigator from the back and fount mixed with uss dauntless lol, im not thrilled aout jets of light coming out of the back of necells for the fact that gen roddenbarry said that star ships engens will have no flames fire or any jets of light coming out of them as propulsion. he was clear on that so its kind of disrespectful to Roddenberry's vision by butting warp trails. in the older movies the effect of light off the ship jumping to warp looked good with streaks of light coming off the hole ship. :)
I love how the designs in lower decks as well as prodigy look like it’s evolving into the Star Trek online look
even the ship in picard, was clearly a pilot ship from sto
@@DavidBrendan7799 Yep, the Ancestor of the Avenger line.
Theory, the "booster" is a Federation transwarp coil, but it takes up the entire aft of the ship because it's less advanced than the borg version and the transforming is for radiators due to it getting hot when in use.
Maybe it's just a coal-fuelled rocket booster powered by a shovel and a pair of brawny, sweaty, hairy arms. :-)
This ship is tiny like maybe 200 meters
I figured it was slipstream drive.
Personally…I am in love with the USS Protostar.
My inner child adores the mysterious third unfolding nacelle/experimental drive system.
The nacelle trails and largely-windowed bridge are quite nice, at least to me.

I can see the "booster" being used like Super Pursuit mode in Knight Rider.
Well said.
The Nacelles look like the kelvin enterprise, the body is a mix of Voyager/Dauntless.
Definitely think this is Starfleet's attempt at Quantum Slipstream drive.
Yup, sure looks that way.

"No argument to be made for warp streaks." Star Trek 1-6 would disagree.
The streaks showed up in Search for Spock actually. The warp sequence in Motion Picture was a tunnelling, not streaks.

indeed though if it has that duntless refrence then the same dauntless refrence might also be found in its engine core too.
When the Protostar lowered its nacelles, I IMMEDIATELY saw the Emissary class from Star Trek Online. It's a dead ringer for it in that configuration.
Definitely like the idea of a "slingshot drive" it would make sense if it was designed to help Voyager's crew get home and would explain the Janeway hologram too. But we'll see.

It looks kind of like Slipstream when it's firing on all cylinders. Maybe that's what the third engine is for. In a sense it is a booster engine as it’s there to go faster, but I doubt it’s like a booster rocket. Prototype engine of some sort for sure. I’m really looking forward to seeing this show!
I think the 3rd nacelle is some type of "Transwarp" drive component
I think the 3rd Nacelle is to allow for Voth style TransWarp Drive
Ok could the Protostar be the transwarp probe spoken in the Pathfinder episode
I can see maybe John Eaves designed this baby. It generally has a US Air Force experimental or testbed fighter jet feel to it. The only thing I don't really like are the bussard collectors, I think the whole ship would look even more sleek if they were kinda cone shaped and orange colored.
The ship has phaser arrays and can build a shuttle from scratch. See episode 3
i think it looks pretty nice, treky and modern at the same time, not something thats easily achieved imo. and while i get that its unpossible to meet everyones taste, i think they did a pretty good job to get as close to that as possible ^^ and compared to the U.S.S. Ceritos from Lower Decks (very obviously a satiric take on Starfleet Ships while still being clearly recogniseable) this one looks like it could work for real in a show >_
It's all about the toys and merchandise.
The primary hill looks very Orville-esque.
Hopefully this is tue ship testing all the voyager technologies from the delta quadrant thats why the ECH is Janeway and the design is so different
I think the 3rd engine is the Quantum slipstream drive
Hehe he just mentioned what i said @12:55
It looks like an STO ship with JJ verse nacelles
What makes it JJ?
@@slighter the warp coils on the inside has a single curved coil coming off it the JJ prize has that single curved coil line around the the top front of nacelles if you look carefully and the nacelles look bulky from the front same as JJ,s the trek yards guys say that too But also see discovery details in there too
@@slighter most likely the shape theres most likely a combination of many other things in adition to the kelvin timeline/jjverse such as the Dauntless/arrowhead/prometheus design.
@@FLAME4564 Indeed.
@@aaronstanding6348 Yeah, the bulkiness is really reminiscent of the JJ ships.
I would love to see a Andrew probert roast of the design 😂😂😂
The protostar is one of the best new ships at the moment, since seen the new enterprise on discovery season one
The warp engines look Kelvin
If it's a Janeway-era vessel, we know the Federation are fiddling with variable geometry ships - Intrepid and the Prometheus.
@@DavidKnowles0 Interesting, just assumed the training part would be for kids. Definitely love this comment.
Send in your support before Samuel's forced to alliterate again!
Coaxial warp drive, that's what the third nacelle is for calling it now.
The name Proto Star is the name of the mini proto Star powering the star drive so it's not matter/Anti matter as for the third nacelle I think it's a Transe warp
Drive. In search for Spok the
Excelsior had a Trans Warp till
Scotty sabotaged it maybe Star
Fleet decided to put more work into
it. Maybe the third nacelle is a Warp ten
Engine
Yea its probably some kind of experimental drive like a spore drive or something
He, I am afraid that the ideas of Mr. Foley might be more interesting than the actual show.
Definitely reminds me of Star Trek Online's Emissary Star Cruiser.
It was strafleet academy training ship
it kinds of looks like the ship from flight of the navigator from the back and fount mixed with uss dauntless lol, im not thrilled aout jets of light coming out of the back of necells for the fact that gen roddenbarry said that star ships engens will have no flames fire or any jets of light coming out of them as propulsion. he was clear on that so its kind of disrespectful to Roddenberry's vision by butting warp trails. in the older movies the effect of light off the ship jumping to warp looked good with streaks of light coming off the hole ship. :)
I really want to like this ship, but I will have to wait and see.
