I’m typing this from my tent in Glen Nevis at the end of the trail, absolutely brilliant experience. What made it most enjoyable for me was going with the flow and not having a set in stone plan to camp at specific places or complete it in any set amount of days. It’s good to know where the best, most convenient campsites are in case you want to use them but I just went with how I felt in the moment and ended up with some amazing wild camp spots that presented themselves at the right time and not having planned them it made it more special. One practical bit of advice though is making sure your sleeping bag and spare clothes stay dry. I got some wild thunder and hailstorms and my rucksack cover blew away resulting in my pack getting soaked. Good job I had the important stuff in dry bags or that could’ve been a big problem. Doing it in the first week of June midges have been an annoyance here and there but not that much of an issue overall. This Glen Nevis campsite is top notch btw, amazing facilities so great to come to at the end and stay a day or two extra in comfort if you finish the trail early

Excellent advice about the dry kit mate.. really important to not let that get wet! Glad you had a brilliant experience mate.. it’s a great trail and i’m sure i’ll do it again 1 day!

Good advice Liam, especially about footwear/liner socks. One thing I would add, take 3 or 4 pairs of plastic foot bags that are used for pedicures, they're basically sock shaped plastic bags. Once you stop for the day, power your feet, put fresh socks on, then place the plastic foot bags over your socks and replace your trail runners, your socks stay dry, and the heat off your feet dry your shoes out while your around camp/in the pub etc 👍🏻 I'm doing the Pennine way at the end of this month again, this time with my daughter, watch this space as they say (on my channel obviously 😉) I've enjoyed watching your journey on the whw, I'm also following hiker sheep and bobo, she's walking over 500 miles round Scotland... respect.

Hi. I had to drop out at Balmaha this week due to wearing Solomon hiking boots. I’ve had these boots for years and never had issues but after 25km on the first day I was in so much pain, and had 3 blisters. I went to Run4It this Thursday and picked up Hoka Challenger 7’s. Going to retry in September.

I'm a horticulturist and that's how I have wore my socks for the last 20 years, its comfortable and wicks the moisture away. End of April in the west cost of Scotland is normally dry and the midges have got started it's still cold at night but worth it. I'm training to do the west highland way but probably going to be next year before I jave the strength in my legs again.

Very decent advice, starting with doing it in your own tempo.
I prefer gtx boots and tough merino socks, (can't stand wet feet and need the ankle support).
With 3 pairs, I change into dry socks after lunch and keep a clean pair for sleep. Zero blisters on WHW and GGW so that works for me.
(Not going into the liner-debate, never tried it and apparently it's also a sensitive military issue).
Had a full 2 days of food left after the WHW, there really are loads of places to sit and eat well or to stock food.
+1 for smidge and my 'midge-net-hat'.
Agreed much on emphasising 'Leave no trace'.

    You beasted the WHW, mate.
April to mid May and end of September into October is best for avoiding those wee midge toerags. April can have some surprisingly good weather these days.
Spread it out to 9 days and take it wasy and have a pint nearly every night.😂
I wear an isocool liner sock and a thicker sock as well. Never get blisters. I wear both boots and trail runners. Boots for the shit weather and trail runners for the hotter weather like in France. If Im doing point to point in the highlands, I wear boots. I dont like peatbogs in trail runners.

There are, however, two words that many northerners pronounce with a 'southern' long vowel: master and plaster. It's possible that the former has undergone change as a result of its association with school, education and notions of 'prestige' pronunciation, although the latter is harder to explain.
