Fourteen-year-old William Kamkwanba lived in a small village called
Malawi, where no one had money for lights. When night fell he dreamed of building
things and taking them apart. When William’s village was hit by a drought, everyone’s
crops began to die. Without enough money for food, let alone school, William spent his
days in the library learning that windmills can create electricity. Persevering against
the odds, William built a functioning windmill out of junkyard scraps, becoming the
local hero who harnessed the wind.
