  • Today, we are going to show you how to sew an old fashioned Dresden plate with a circle center. This is starting with the basic idea of this pattern.
We have opened a Facebook group as of Aug 1, 2022 at : / 625151945491351
Our first virtual sew date starts at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST on Saturday, August 20, 2022! Come to chat, sew and say hello, if you get the chance. We would all love to see you on line!

Here are the free templates if you need them but you have to make these:

Please remember that quilting and piecing is about having fun not feeling pressured!
There is so many things to look at on a scrappy quilt that other people won't notice any mistakes you make.
I hope this helps you conquer your Mount Scrapmore!

Good Morning Brenda, I guess I’m late to the party on this video. 🤣. Better late than never. I have a plan to make a Dresden and make it into something fun. I’m not sure when it will be on the top of the list, but I will get it done hopefully before next spring or fall(?). 🤣🤣 I have a lot on my must make list. They look fun to make. I hope you and Mr. Camera-man have a good week. 🥰 Chris
P.S. As time allows, I do go through your videos. I learn something from every video I watch. Thanks Again 👏👍

My favorite tool for making the centers of Dresden plates (and other round appliqués) are the Karen Kay Buckleys perfect circles, and bigger perfect circles. You MUST introduce us all to your cat sometime (please) He was begging to be fed in one of your other videos but we never got to see him. I love all fur babies. My 3 dogs are my quilting assistants (though I don't know if they always assist, or if at times they get in the way. No worries I wouldn't quilt without them!
As an add on if you don't mind hand sewing you can also English Paper Piece your dresdens!

@@conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509 I have made larger dresdens both by making my own templates, or using other shapes like large pentagons and fussy cutting fabric for the center which is great looking. Many EPP dresdens are not named dresdens, but coffin shapes, and so on so you have to look around for them. I love to hand sew at night and these are a GREAT way to use up scraps. Maybe I will take some photos and post to the Facebook page.

I attach mine with just a "big stitch quilting stitch" (Running stitch?) they end up fine even if as a block they are not attached as well as if they are sewn by machine, but by the time they are quilted, they are fine.

@@conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509 I've tried this with hexis. I've been multiple carpal tunnel surgeries and hand sewing is bad on my hands. The Dresden's I've made so far I've used double sided fusible and used a blanket stitch on the outer edge sewing it to the block. Once quilted I sew around outer edges of the petals and leave the plate alone with it's top stitching. I enjoy the utube channels to see the different ways everyone has of making the same block. I don't have a huge scrap pile as I piece a lot of my backs from the front top scraps. Which usually becomes a new quilt top lol.

Hi over there. Here in Germany we are about to get the next heat weave with over 30 degrees, but the most scary part of it is...no rain or the drought. Speaking about the Dresden pattern this scares me too. I wonder if I would be able to sew it that way to get a fine round circle and not wonky one. Besides the circle in the middle this stitching around uhhhhh wouldnt it be better to sew 2 circles (fabric + ironing fleece) right sights together with a cut on the ironing fleece and turn it inside out? Kindest Bille

Morning Brenda, thank you so much for sharing. I’m a bit late commenting as I’ve been watching with my grandson (almost two) and as you were sewing he was gleefully making wheeeee! noises 🤣🤣 I’ll watch again later.
I have mainly used templates and paper piecing to make my Dresden. I love sewing the centre circles. When I was teaching I used to call the threads to sew around the circles “any what thread” because it didn’t really matter what sort was used.
I hadn’t thought of using interfacing before, it makes perfect sense! What weight of interfacing do you use or doesn’t it matter?.
I’ll need to practice again on the machine. I think my seams might have been a bit off as I couldn’t get them to lie flat once sewn into a circle.
See you in your next video

Facing question- I have been hodge-podge crumb quilting for over a year, using all the scraps- then I used fusible interfacing on some of the areas that were 1/2 inch- I want to to stay put ,stick together and stay stitched(?)- do you think it is
Necessary ? Could it be too stiff? I have no idea what I’m doing-ever!

    • @conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509
      @conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Martha! That is an interesting question. If the interfacing is really a light weight, it should be fine. If the interfacing is a heat fusible, it may get a little stiff. Even light weight Heat and bond gets too hard to make a cuddly quilt. This would be an excellent question for the Facebook group. I hope that answers your question. I hope you have a cheerful week ahead. Thanks for watching and your question.
