  • Update video on the 4 frame nucs I built last winter. These are DIY out of scrap lumber and plywood. I use these beehives to raise queen bees and make small splits early in the season. #beekeeping #slackline #honeybee

      I said I would. I had another video planned, but didn’t get around to it.

    Good points. I"ve got to shoot a video of our 3 way subdivided 10 frame supers. One reason is that I can put the dividers to let the hive grow without moving them into a larger box. But not as easy to move! You might find that design useful. Maybe. I have a crapload of 4 and 5 frame Nucs. Many there are so many ways to do this stuff!

      I tried that this year as well, only I used medium boxes because that’s what I had available. I think I would find deeps more useful. I also had issues with drift, but some of that was my own fault because I made some splits using frames with larvae and some with just frames of food. Obviously the bees left the compartments with food and and moved to the compartments with brood. So a handful of queen cells got abandoned. Basically you can make more mistakes with stand alone nucs. Sometimes I will knowingly make a mistake because I’m out of time and recourses but to stubborn to abort the mission.

    I have my tops with the rim boards. I put a upper entrance in one side of it. About 3/4 of an inch. Do you think that’s a plus of negative? Thanks for the video. May you be blessed and prosper.

      @DRIECUTHoney  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t use upper entrances. Maybe there are advantages in different climates? I feel like it’s more natural for the bees to regulate the temperature with one entrance. But if it’s working for you, then who is to argue with the results? I like to experiment with different things and decide what works best for me. I like to keep an open mind

      There are too many gadgets out there. I quest everything has a place but looks like just money ratchets to me. I like trying different things too. But haven’t been in it long enough to have tried much. Lol

      @@larimorefarms your correct. Learn about the bees and just use the techniques and products that you feel are beneficial. Don’t try and fit other peoples stuff into your operation if it’s not necessary.

    4frame+feeder as needed is what I have ended up using with my limited experience this season. Just thought of something slap another one of top and you have a functioning swarm trap. Paint that chipboard heavy and it'll make it a few seasons, plus like ya mention it's scrap. Ty William good to see ya how's the family, you got a new job?

    • @DRIECUTHoney
      @DRIECUTHoney  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct, I start my new job next week. I will have more time at home, thus the reason for the switch

      @@DRIECUTHoney Nice more time with family is always good, you'll get to see the bees more too.🙂

    Like the lid feeder shim and the scrap /cheaper material for the sides but the 4 vs 5 frames. I Only see a storage space as an advantage if you have a lot of them. (when not using them) 1 3/4" x say 25 that's about 3 ft

    • @DRIECUTHoney
      @DRIECUTHoney  ปีที่แล้ว

      True, and it mostly depends on the intended use I would say. Less frames can be an advantage for queen rearing, for example. I still use 5 frame boxes as well. Different tools for different tasks. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

    Agreed. I’m not a fan of the glory holes in my top covers.

      I’m the same way. I like the idea of trickle feeding, but I hate holes in my lids.

  • @dennissitter2242
    @dennissitter2242 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I run a 1/2" feeder rim on all my lids. Even the 2 framers. I also have a feeder hole in most. This year I had a raccoon that reaked havoc on my nuc feeding. The rim will allow you to use sugar bricks. The raccoon never bothered any hives with sugar bricks. I make the on small cookie sheets. Score them before you bake them. They will break along the Score marks. thanks for sharing.
