Sucks how our coaching staff keeps getting poached every year. The Chiefs ongoing success is due to HC, DC and QB that don’t leave.
last year was the 1st time we dist get pocahed
The Chiefs also draft well too. They had issues with their o line so they invested a lot of high draft picks to rebuild the o line over the last few years. Meanwhile it seems the 49ers only ever take WRs RBs or edge rushers in the first 3 rounds.
The Chiefs also have had the same referees on their team too.
Exactly!
@@jamesbills5998 SOOOOOOOO true👏
Tim is a good guest. Has lots of niner knowledge. Special teams and defense are letting us down. 😢
Yeah and turnovers too
Like I wouldn’t exactly call that fake punt against the Rams a “turnover” but it was close enough because you’re about to get the ball back on 4th down and instead they maintained possession
St and D always lets us down. Let us down during the sb too
He’s trash dude 🚮
I’m not sure how much it happened vs NYJ or LAR, but vs Minnesota I saw Bosa getting doubled a lot and often get chipped as well. If he is getting that attention, someone else has to get home. It’s either the players aren’t good enough or the scheme isn’t.
Leonard Floyd has been invisible since the opener. He was supposed to be the guy on the other side who could put pressure on QB's. The Niners D has been atrocious on 3rd down. Can't get off the field, can't get to the QB in time to rush their throws.
We need WRs that can catch.
To me it's a combination of 3 three things
1. Run defense is inconsistent
2. Pass Rush is inconsistent outside of Bosa who isn't quite getting home.
3. Getting beat over the top too often with either a Safety on WR or no help deep.
Elliot replacing Hargrave might cure #1, which puts you in better down and distance for #2 but they've got to get home more. If they do, simplifying the Coverages should be no problem as less time in pocket and smaller windows generally mean better defense overall.
The buck stops with the two people who put this team together. Kyle Shanahan & John Lynch
Apparently Lynch and Shanahan are not seeing eye to eye right now. Lynch wanted Cowing in Sunday as a WR and Shanahan didn't want to so that is a big problem. Lynch watches damn near every practice and he sees the good and bad with his own eyes so KS is not wanting to admit he was wrong and should have had Cowingin the game.
@@TinaSnyder-v4iat the end of the day unfortunately Kyle has the final say on who plays….we know how Kyle is with young receivers….makes me wonder how he was going to use Pearsall with that philosophy.
They got to the fucking Super Bowl last season. Are you serious? The defense lost that game. The defense lost the past two games
It’s the entire coaching staff from top to bottom
The Defense issue is simple to diagnose. It’s predictable and doesn’t disguise enough (the opposite of Vikings D), and so they get picked apart once a good offensive coordinator and QB start understand the 49er game plan.
Disagree, I don't think disguise is a necessity to be great. They've gotten beaten deep repeatedly which means the issue is too much man and matchup once the motion happens results in Safeties on speedsters. What made Ryan's defense stout was they pretty much stayed in a 2 Deep shell either Cover 2/4 or Cover 6. It was simple and allowed the players to make plays within the scheme. Hargrave going down might be a blessing with now Collins/Elliot are run stoppers so you don't need to bring the Safeties into the box and can rely on the front 7 to keep the run in check.
Disguises are subject to assignment breakdown. Every defense has a weakness. The consistent failures for the 9ers are
1) young DB types making mental errors
2) backup linebackers not being athletic and disciplined enough to run our scheme
3) interior D lineman not anchoring against double teams vs duo
4) edge players not getting home.
5) DC getting beat on the same concept multiple times without adjustment.
Two of those are coachable. Two of those are concerning.
One of those remains to be seen
Shanahan’s drop back passing game is horrendous and always has been. If you get the 49ers offense in obvious pass situations you can just blanket the receivers and wait for the rushers to get pressure
Is that why they averaged 27 points a game last year, Brock Purdy led almost all statistics in passing last year? Purdy has the most passing yards this year? WTF are you talking about?
@@BBaker916 watch same game film, instead of looking at box scores. Shanahan’s offense is built around playing with the lead, and using the run to control time of possession. If the run isn’t a threat then play action isn’t a threat.
The defense isn’t excusable in this, but you can’t sit there and pretend that Shanahan is perfect.
@@carlsoto1747 I don’t but you clearly don’t understand real football. This isn’t Madden, humans are playing and humans are fail able. When you put up 24 points against a depleted team with a depleted team, you should win.
@@carlsoto1747you can run play action without an effective run game. That was the Minnesota Vikings for the previous two years, and they had an effective offense.
The drop back game has problems, especially the 7 step drop, which exposes the right tackle. But the passing concepts and route combinations are often so effective that they are stolen by other teams. The drop back game isn’t always married as well as the play action in terms of timing, but your blanket criticism is poorly supported by the film. The offense is far from dysfunctional.
Also, TK and Guy should be a staple show
Tim is good when he is true to himself. A couple of times I think he tried to appease certain groups. He knows his football, but on occassion he deviates. Good analyst overall.
Our secondary is slow and we have no pass rush. Scheme hasn’t been great, but we also have a personal problem
Speaking of Seattle, their head coach is one of three defensive coordinators (along with Flores and Spagnuolo) who seem to have the answer for Kyle's offense. So, recent seasons are no predictor for what it'll take to beat the Seahawks this year.
The thing about Bosa is it seems like very often he is being held specifically by his neck.
Bosa does get held but he appears to be slow and moves stiff I’ve seen many pass rushers this season get around the edge quicker and have more array of moves we should’ve traded Bosa for 2 first round picks while the stove was hot smh 🤦🏾♂️ he hasn’t been the same player since the contract
@@cjgray9352 I have heard the same remarks before, and this leads me to think that Kyle and John are not good at making tough decisions.
@@cjgray9352 unlike Bill Walsh

Tim and I were working on something for his podcast and I asked him to answer just one question for my show
His pod on his feed comes out later in the week
@@guyhaberman nice man, thanks for the reply. Rope him into a weekly show with you, he can pub the SF Standard. Thanks for all of the work and content!
I am reminded of the famous line from the Dirty Harry movie that goes "A man's got to know his limitations" when it comes to Kyle Shanahan! He can NOT call the right plays to close out games when the team is ahead with few minutes left in the game! And Kyle is the one who put Ronnie Bell into the Rams game!
@GuyHaberman I gotta say Guy, hearing that “TOUCHDOWN 49ERS!” coming from you makes me confident we’re in great hands if papa ever retires ☺️
lolol it was fun to say
Just love all the emotional responses 😂
Damn i didn’t think Tim was the 9ers biggest problem but I trust you judgement Guy. Gonna have to fire him
Agreed with lots of thing you said, the coaching stuff got to do better jobs
Hate to say it, but I think nick bosa is a bit overrated. He doesn't get home as often as I wish he did.
He has at a minimum 2 and many times 3 defenders on him holding him all the time which does not get called. Watch how many times defenders all but have Bosa in a chokehold. It's past ridiculous and had moved into seriously dangerous area for Bosa.
The consistent failures for the 9ers defense are:
1) young DB types making mental errors
2) backup linebackers not being athletic and disciplined enough to run our scheme
3) interior D lineman not anchoring against double teams vs duo
4) edge players not getting home.
5) DC getting beat on the same concept multiple times without adjustment.

This is the whole ball of wax right here... Good talk Tim
It is the same every year. New scheme which takes awhile to get used to. Meanwhile, the practice squad can fill in at offense and do well. We should be 2-1 if not for the drops.
There is NO guarantee that CMC even plays THIS season and I predict that he WON'T play this year.
Niners biggest problem is paying top 5 dollars for top 15 talent
Steve Wilks was scapegoated by the greatest choker in all US sports
@divinecomedy7311 yah the way that was handled i did not care for. We lost the SB cause our oline sucked. The management did not address that. Puni is great and all but Brendel and Mckivitz are not good enough. We can’t have both. If anything put Puni at right tackle and Mckivitz at right guard. I know its a big ask for a rook. But Mckivitz his arms are too short and he is too slow to play RT
It wasn’t that dog shit blitz in overtime? That even the announcers were asking what the hell was that?! This would be far more believable if ppl claimed that Shanahan went on offense first so he could blame the defense if they lost. It’s still stupid, but at least it would make ppl think. Also the same ppl who shit on Shanahan were freaking out about Aiyuk, that he was younger and better and had to be paid bc of the Super Bowl window and Super Bowl or bust bc that’s a thing apparently. Two Super Bowl appearances are also just failure bc feelings. There’s a great stat about how coaches who lose a Super Bowl don’t end up winning a Super Bowl, and all the stupid ppl think that’s a stat that means anything other than coaches who lose a Super Bowl are typically fired half the time over feelings and stupidity. Also it’s hard to win a Super Bowl. Andy Reid isn’t all of a sudden the greatest coach. He’s simply a really good one who got a player who became the best at his position, an important position. The players on the 49ers could’ve won both of those games, and lost both of those games. Especially this recent one. The o-line as you mentioned is a huge reason why.
You must be young
Since you so in love with Wilkes find him a job
@@divinecomedy7311 he wasn't scapegoated. He choose to sacrifice the run by having the LB's further away from the LOS to play pass first putting the LB's at a disadvantage in the run game. This season it's the opposite with the DC having them play run first causing them to open up the intermediate pass game. Hopefully, Jordan Elliott can be that run stuffer eating two blockers allowing the LB's to just flow/play fast rather than having to waste a second having to diagnose.
1:39 - Who should have been the new 9er head coach. But c'est la vie.
They never replaced Gipson at S. Yes, Huf, Brown and even Mustapha are redundant. Also, the drop-off from Greenlaw to Campbell is tremendous.
We have 3 strong safeties now 😐. We lost the one free safety who had the speed and cover ability with Jimmie Ward a couple years ago. Gipson was decent, but even he got burned pretty badly come the playoffs.
I can pretty much guarantee that Kyle and John are begging that Robert Saleh gets fired this season by the Jets so they can bring him back as DC. Sorensen ain't it. Brian Schneider was never the answer as the Special teams coach either. Chris Tabor was adored by his players as the interim coach with the Panthers and he regularly had his teams in the top 5 in special teams year in and year out no matter how crappy the rest of the team was around him.
Robert Saleh back as DC and Chris Tabor in as Special Teams Coordinator and the 49ers have no more excuses not to go out and execute at the highest level.
The defense has three different levels operating separately. To be successful, they need to be coordinated. That’s one guy’s job and it isn’t getting done. You need to give Staley a shot. Move Sorensen to Special Teams. And,move Schneider out the door. You need to shake things up. Every trouble shooter out there knows what I’m talking about.
"They can't win a Super Bowl without Christian McCaffrey" Really ? Why not ? They have an elite QB and two solid backups at RB. Would not be afraid to put It on Purdy's shoulders. I have no doubt they can win a Super Bowl but not If the DEFENSE cannot do It's job.
So we agree. *with THIS defense* and without CMC
Absolutely correct on the poor play of the defense-mainly the lack of a pass rush. Having Sorensen as the DC was a mistake, also bringing in Leonard Floyd. He can’t even separate from a blocker let alone rush or get to the QB. If he manages to elude the blocker, he just runs around or falls down to avoid the play or any contact! It appears that he is afraid of contact and selective of any play to get involved in-what a loser!
A big issue is the alignment..we have the guys to get it done..we need to run a 5 .3 defense and bring everything tight this will allow one on one match ups and apply more pressure so qbs have too rush their throws allowing the secondary too play faster..but for some reason we keep running the wide 9 and getting destroyed over and over again..smh!!
I say this as a huge Shanny fan, but at the end of the day he is our biggest problem now. it all falls to him. he is hiring these DCs, or has a huge say in the matter. As bad as the D has been back to back games, Shanny was thoroughly out coached against Min, his terrible decision making in 4th quarters and that 6 minute offense at the end of the game on Sunday; his unacceptable decision to play Bell over Conley or Cowing. I love the guy and I'm grateful for his part in transforming our culture, but it might be time to look in a new direction, or at least hire a legit OC.
Honestly, comments like this should just stop. Shanahan has had way too much success in SF for ownership to even remotely consider terminating him after starting 1-2. Do people forget that he lead his team to the SB just last season, as well as the Conf Championship the season before? Sigh.
Biggest problem with Santa Clara is the Offense, Defense, & Special teams other than that they will be fine....
I'm an extremely optimistic 9er fan and I didn't let the Vikings loss sway my judgement of this team but after Rams loss with the added injuries I started feeling pretty negative. And that's when it occurred to me that 9ers could have easily won both those games. It wasn't like we got blown out and looked completely like crap. Just need to clean this up asap. And we will be fine. We have Brock! Jennings. Samuel. Kittle and Mason and Warner, Bosa, Huff and others on defense to stem the bleeding here. Not over yet guys. We still have the pieces is all I'm saying.
The issues is the wide 9 that the 49ers kept running which isn’t working. Try new schemes or techniques
Tim is great to listen to his analysis is something I agree 💯 with. The 49ners are in denial because they think they can just show up and win. The NFL isn't like that 😊.Any team will beat you if you let them do it. The Ram's are a perfect example of this.
Before watching I’m gonna say I think the biggest problem is Kyle has the team convinced they’re so talented they don’t need to put any effort to win, that they can just walk onto the field and steamroll the other team and that’s not how this league works. Even the bad teams are professionals with pride and talent and they will beat you if you let them.
Accountability is what needs to be taken here! 49ers lost 2 straight games and u never seen sorenson say anything about what he needs to do to put the players in the right position to make plays. As for the offensive side of the ball some of the play calling is a bit in question too. It’s still early enough to get things back on track but the injuries are piling up. The players on the roster have to step up now. We’ll see what happens when the patriots come to town
Niners defense is definitely an issue! Pass rush isn't great. Coverage by DBs is bad. Don't really stop the run well. The whole thing is a mess!
49ers defense is just good but never great or elite. Always overrated. Bosa is way overpaid.
Wilkes was scapegoated for HC
Everyone is suddenly blaming the secondary. What about the pass rush and run defenses. The best defense against the pass is a good pass rush! A banged up Ram Oline handled us up front. Bosa had 1 tackle! Check the stats. He’s the guy most mentioned as “The Guy” on the 49er defense, and if they are double or triple teaming him, that means other people are unblocked. Maybe A creative blitz package would help. Maybe Sorensen is overwhelmed and can’t figure it out.
In no universe should George Odom be covering Justin Jefferson. Any scheme that allows for that kind of matchup is a mistake. We are allowing 52% 3rd down conversions, which is ranked 30th out of 32 in the NFL. 60% red zone conversion defense, which is 21st out of 32. The Steelers and Seahawks are at the top of almost every defensive ranking. We will have a very tall task trying to beat the Seahawks. Mike McDonald's defense in the Ravens Christmas game last year completely stymied Brock and Kyle.
Their biggest issue is they’re too old, too tired, and burned out.
That makes no sense ... Demo, Bosa, Ward, Huf, Brown, Mustapha, Fred are ALL YOUNG to fairly young. Age is not the problem on our defense
@@newerax1009 Fred is not young. Bosa is not young. You're conveniently overlooking the wear and tear of post-season play. The 49ers have the oldest roster in the NFL coming off their 2nd SB loss to the same team/coach/QB. Players like Deebo, Juice, Warner, Kittle. ... ALL of these guys have HEAVY wear and tear on them from extensive post-season play. The BIGGEST issue is they have the added psychological burden of knowing they're on the wrong side of youth now. *You're literally seeing this team fall apart at the wheels because they're not healed, they're not recovered*
Kittle - hurt
Deebo - hurt
BA - not hurt but emotionally, psychologically and physically is cooked after the stress and duress of fighting for a new contract. you can see it. The dude has no life in him.
CMC - *will not return this season*
AGE IS THE ISSUE and you're going to see this team go careening off a cliff over the next few games.
Warner is next btw .... followed by Williams . . .
The last thing that nobody will admit it to is this core group of players KNOWS just how hard it is to climb _this_ particular mountain again. And they KNOW they should've had *at least* one SB by now .. . _but have lost two_ . There's an emotional and psychological weight that places on a player _especially_ in a long ago championship rich franchise.
Injuries are not going to go away ... there are going to be more of them and they will arise earlier. Right now this team looks like it does at either mid-season or the end of a season ... and it's just the beginning.
@@newerax1009no there not
This secondary is burnt toast, can we see green already? Lynch can only draft strong safeties so idk why they took a 3rd (Huf, ji aiyri and now mustapha) I wish they made a move for Simmons because we need a ball hawk back there.
I blame Kawacommie for Harbaugh getting fired when he wrote negative articles about Jim and no blame to GM Baalke who was the main problem in the 49ers organization! Never liked the Kawacommie man since!
You can't promote to DC a person that has never been one! Is there not an urgency to win the Superbowl now, before the window shuts down this year??? Doesn't make any sense! You should have hired an experienced coach for the position!!!
This might be our last run guys and if it is, it's been fun guys. The last 5 years was super entertaining
The run is over
The fact is, Brandon Staley is supposed to be the master of coverage. Since the coverage in the last two games has been bad, who is to blame?
Lastly, who is truly running the defense? Is it Staley, given his more experience? Or is it Nick Sorensen, considering his lack of experience? Or is it the defensive players who aren’t selling out? I’m not sure.
McCalfhrvergnugen treatment needed!!!
Time to clean house..bring in Pete Carol as HC..
do established coaches want to work under kyle? He wants to win or lose his way.
49ers of done terrible in the draft and have paid too many players big contracts
Brendel and Mckvitz are too much of a liability. We need to do something with one of them. Now the Gravedigger is out😢. Also to ever drop bosa in coverage is idiotic. Kyle needs to make some moves.
Nick Sorensen will be fired by week 6. Our DB’s continue to get absolutely TORCHED our pass rush and run stopping is getting beat almost every time now. No in game adjustments to the opposing offense adjustments and we blow a 14 point lead twice to a banged up Rams. Yeah no this isn’t our year guys. With the amount of injuries to add to all that I would say we’re lucky to make the playoffs this season
They dont have the horses to be playing that vanilla legion of boom style of defense. Put more men on the line and experiment with blitzes. We needed experience at DC not whatever Sorensen is.
Trading for Buckner is a real possibility to help this defense.
He’s on IR
@@hungphat1553 yes I know and even more reason to go get him!
all these people crapping on Shanahan but have such a short memory of Tomsula and the rest of the garbage coaches. Shanahan is able to keep the offense moving. All these people calling for him to go are very very stupid!
Mooney is hurt, lenoir is playing great, yadom is getting torched by speed but the safeties are the real problem. They arent helping against the run and they arent helping on those deep balls.
I think it's the coverage calls that have the Safeties out of place.
@@marcellusfulbright5918 there may be some bad coverage calls and you have to give credit to crafty vet QBs also. But these safeties are not closing quick enough and reading the plays. Or where there going. Not sinching up on those zones. Clamp those deep routes. Clamp that zone. Bait the QB. And get down hill against the run fill those cracks
Don’t forget our OL is terrible
Tim so good on these and such an asshole on Twitter

They can't win anything right now. 6-11 or 5-12 for them. Also fire Shanahan!
And replace him with who?
@@oldtomplatz8862Ben Johnson
Kyle is a great OC, but a bad HC. He's a control freak and doesn't have a personality that gets his players inspired/motivated. He needs a DC that can give that to his defense. It worked with Saleh and DeMeco cause they were the energy of the defense, whereas Kyle is just the brain of the offense. Wilks had the same energy of Kyle and it seems Sorenson does too, cause the defense is looking uninspired.. and if Kyle really wanted a DC that can operate the wide 9 effectively, then he should've swallowed up his pride and figured out a way to hire Jim Schwartz when he had the chance before the Browns snagged him. Now i'm thinking next year when we rebuild, we should do away with the wide 9 cause our defense keeps getting gashed in the middle.. but knowing Shanahan's stubbornness, i bet he's keeping the wide 9.
With all that being said... I'd still keep Shanahan as my HC lol
This team is so slow. It really has showed the last 2 games, this team needs to get younger and quicker
Its Kyle! Period.
Head Coach and the dysfunction he created is the problem
Watching Bosa his effort and play that 34$ a year seems like such a ripoff along with ayuik 😮
Yep, dumb extensions
Trade Deboo for Reddick!!!
49ers have no speed
40WHINERS o-line, d-line, DBs, special team all TRASH 🤣😂😭
This team is going in the toilet.... WTF....
Let it. It's the oldest team in the league. Kyle refuses to play rookies and is hesitant to play 2nd years as well. He reluctantly does it. I don't get it. Puni wouldn't be out there right now if there wasn't an injury. Sometimes this team is lucky to have injuries just so we can get the better players in. It's Kyle Shanahans ego that gets in the way of this team getting the big win.
Oh and the strength and conditioning coach is garbage. The 49ers are always in injury hell more than most teams every single year.
@@Richard-gw2lrthe rookies have to show they can do the job from A-Z. If they are not doing the job A-Z but they are getting substantial playing time it make it okay for the rest of the players to not do the job well A-Z.

Biggest 49ers problem is Kyle...
How so? We have key injuries to our star players, and Ayuk held out and looks mediocre. Our defensive secondary is slow and we have no pass rush. More of a personnel problem IMO
