    Thks & question;
    I'm a retired scientists & a little bared. I was going to get an arduino for fun.
    However I looked at my smartphone & noted it has most of the arduino sensors. So I think I will just learn to develop simple apps for smartphones, access all their sensors, & route data via their usb port. Essentially use a smartphone just like an arduino/raspberry-pi.

      Thats possible i guess, but it depends what you want to achive here. Arduino code and sensors are not the same as app development. Also connecting sensors to other things can be tricky with a smarrphone

      Thk you ever so much for replying. It's so hard to get a sound answer to simple questions nowadays.
      Well I did slightly over-simplify my questions. So I'm a retired physicist, bored, & want to disgn/build projects from scratch.
      *So for low lever control of sensors/actuators I plan to use FPGAs. An FPGA can be reprogrammed to produce any desired classic or recursion function in/output. In-fact any cpu/controller/electronics can be programmed into FPGAs but their performance is about ~3years behind current cpu/controller/electronics. FPGAs originates out of the military (ex: missiles, radars, etc) and are slowly coming into the civilian domain. FGPAa are hard to learn (& have community little support), low performance FPGAs are very affordable.
      *However every system requires some type of human interface for maintenance, repair, analysis, modification, config mgt, etc, etc best done on traditional computers. I was going to go with arduino/raspberry-pi but realized a smart phone/watch surpassed most of my needs. I assume the android high lever development environment will allow me to upgrade to better smart phones/watches independent of vendor & changing hw/sw.
      *Sooo the strategy would be develop/document the projects on traditional desktop computers. Transition the interface & system control development to a smart phone/watch. Finally transition system control development to a FGPA (& hopefully keep the profanity to a minimum, fingers-crossed ;).

      @@tombouie it really seems like you have a good base for doing a project like this and if the FGPAs is good enough to do what you need then thats great. For me who studied programming Arduino was a great entry to the world of electronics and the programming of that. Arduino is also very cheap to get started with and the sensors are really not much. For a newbie this is the way to go i think. Seems like you are a bit more advanced than that and tearing apart and using older smartphones is a great thing i think. Would be interesting to hear what kind of project you are looking to make :)

      Thks for asking;
      My main ultimate goal is just to keep my skills sharp in retirement. So my focus will be setting-up a competent/efficient/easy/etc work-flow for research/development & implementation/fielding/testing/maintence/etc of any/all projects I do. It's lots of mental work up-front but tend to make it easier in implementation in the end (instead of vice versa). For electronics projects I'll need a nice interface for some project (ex: smart phone/watch) and for others small smart logic for actuators/sensors (FPGAs).
      My 1st project will probably be a super smart inverter for a solar panel system. I do plan to only use building code approved equipment of course. However I'll do this to figure-out the best design/brand of smart inverter to buy & how to DIY fix them myself (instead getting a new one every decade):

      @@tombouie Super interesting take on what you plan to do. Solar panels are a very interesting item in Europe right now so i would acually love to hear more about your super smart solar inverter. I play around with solar myself and use Victron Inverter for my small usage. Its awesome to use machines with solar energy

    What I need is how to use them. The little DVD that came with the set won't play on either of my laptops. the drive runs you can hear it but it doesn't display . I spent about 2 hours today trying to watch it but no luck.

    Fantastic video, I’m new to the world of electronic components. I picked this up on the same run I bought my first raspberry pi on (yesterday). These sensors would still work with a raspberry pi right? Lol

      @@logicron I have no idea what this person is going on with. Perhaps their volume is turned all the way down? I had you at 1/2 volume on my phone with a rural highway 100 ft away; and I heard you clearly without any difficulty. You weren’t mumbling at all. I didn’t feel the need to say what I am about to, and instead I just turned down the volume to halfway. The only thing I could suggest is adjusting the music level to your vocal recording prior to mastering them. The music was a bit loud and was much louder than the voice track. Again, I just adjusted the volume on my side…. Problem solved.
