His take on pts was spot on. We would always make sure when we did training we made it as real as possible. When we did pt events we made them as real as possible so that when it really happens, and we saw it , it wouldn’t hurt and affect us as much. Not that it would be hard and make us studded in our step, but it would make us crippled.
I am glad Brent touched on the topic of losing your way after getting out. He hit hard on the right topics. I think they way they transition us after we get out is the weak spot. "Not enough management experience" when looking for a job, and you have a been a platoon sgt, is an insult. I get you have to have "their" version of experience, but after being in the private sector for thirty plus years, you can learn anything you want given the time and training. The tools of "manhood" have been taken from us and therein lies the key to overcoming ptsd.
What Brent is describing at 46min is cultural competence for Veteran social determinants of health. Veterans want to be treated by veterans…by those with the same lived experience
I’m not sure that logic totally rings true. A dude who spent a decade at a tier 1 unit obviously needs a different type of therapist than a 16 year old with anxiety but just because someone hasn’t lived your experiences doesn’t mean they can’t help you. I’m sure a prior service therapist would be a great asset but there are far too many vets to rely on that.
I use to think the same as him about PTSD and would think just get over it. Then last deployment I started to have problems and I couldn’t understand why. Thank God I’m not a drinker and turned down taking all the medication they tried to put me in. My difference in I was a huge extrovert before and now I’m a huge introvert and don’t go out like I use too. I’m definitely working to change it and I do think all the medications makes it worse a lot of the time. I never say I have PTSD and hate when any doctors or anyone says it to me.
Brent is not only a legendary warrior but apparently a legendary story teller. That last story was one of the most descriptive and insightful ive ever heard. What a warrior and thank you for sharing that experience with us. We can be our own worst critics but man this dude should be so proud of his service and the wisdom gained from his battles. I’ve been listening to these podcasts for years and have to say this is the first time this perspective on PTSD was brought up. It’s definitely an interesting conversation to bring up to the VA, why is it that no matter the situation relating to combat or mental health the VA is so quick to diagnose veterans with PTSD. There’s really never much Psychological diagnostic testing in the VA just a simple response “PTSD”. I wish they would bring up EMDR more as a way to cope with the bad days from combat. Also, he nailed it with the veterans using negative means of coping mechanisms, I know first hand from spending years self medicating with drugs, alcohol and porn. It took a drug induced psychosis to open my eyes. One day at a time brothers and sisters!

Loss of purpose for any man no matter what it is he steps away or is forced away from is the ultimate killer of man. I’m a blue collar worker thru an thru. Had I joined the military, it would’ve been the exact same for me when I would get laid off due to “lack of work” or whatever. I’d fall into slumps watching band of brothers on my couch wishing the phone would ring, I’d beg friends and guys I knew or show up to jobsites as a 21yr old kid during the crash of 08 offering to pick up trash for cash around the jobsites. A man needs purpose. Keep showing up guys! Keep asking, and keep busy! I promise you one day you will get that phone call or bump into somebody at the Home Depot or whatever your trade is and somebody will give you your shot! May take years. That’s fine, the shot isn’t the end all. It’s showing up every day and putting forth that effort! Please don’t ever give up vets! We all cherish your sacrifices!

It was taken to Airforce base in Ohio they said.All were forced to sign NDA s and they made it top secret. Was wondering if u or any of the guys around there that time have any insight. My uncle was in the Canada Army and served over in Afghanistan and has PTSD but it wasn't from serving. He has PTSD from helping in the Haiti earthquake in 2010.
A lot of today's research on TBI indicates that a lot of people diagnosed with PTSD are actually suffering from untreated TBIs. A lot of the symptoms are the same and early in the wars when everybody was diagnosed with PTSD, Doctors didn't understand TBIs as much as they do today, and there's still a ton they don't know. People were being overmedicated for PTSD and it just made it worse because they actually had a TBI, and when they tried to tell the Dr's that something else was wrong, nobody listened to them, or even worse, they were labeled as drug seekers and then all help stopped.
Glad someone else brought up the PTSD issue. TBI or no TBI, I'm sure some stuff happens to people that were NOT prepared by training or whatever. He mentioned how he had scenarios of "get to the extract or he dies"; "expect to carry a friend". Well that kid that was driving a truck didn't get any of that. At the height of it, they were pulling people that had no business being in war.
I had to pause this and buy a pack of cigars from FRCC🇺🇸 I don’t necessarily agree with Brent’s assessment on PTSD. He keeps saying “break”. Not everything is that extreme. It affects people differently, but not everyone who had that diagnosis is “broken”. Obvious he is entitled to his opinion though. As a combat veteran and now a cop, who has been through the wringer a few times, it’s nice to hear someone who cares.
PTSD is a real thing. TBIs are a real thing. What he said is his *opinion*; he is not a qualified person to speak on those issues. Not only did he go through the top tier training, but he went through scenarios to prepare him for such events as the loss of a friend. That kid that was driving a truck had 0 of that.

Speaking of never saying things - I was in the 4th grade and didn't enjoy school to say the least. I was going on a Boy Scout camping trip one weekend and told my teacher that I hoped I got into a car accident so I didn't have to return to school on Monday. Well guess what happened. I ended up spending 8 weeks in the hospital with a broken femur, pelvis, and a couple other injuries.
I agree with him. I think that people handle stress differently even with training. And I think different types of stress are handled differently by people as well with or without the training. I think some of it is willpower. I think some of it may be life experience before going into the military. I'm also one of those people who did serve in the military but I don't talk about it cuz I honestly don't feel like I did anything special anyway. I serve my country because I wanted to and I'm proud of it. I will go around asking for discounts. I don't go around bragging about my time in the military and how great I was. I don't advertise really at all. If somebody asked me that's different.
Nothing worse than going to a memorial and when they start calling names from the Alpha Roster and then they get to the dead's guys name on that alpha roster taps starts playing.

I'm very proud of Tucker for bringing this up. Couple years ago NPR did a documentary about PTSD and profiled two vets that had killed themselves. One was in Afghanistan (I think) and got PTSD (he said) because they ordered him to stand watch over a dead American soldier until the body could be picked up. He said it upset him to keep the dogs off the body etc. (I hate to tell him that we don't leave bodies laying around in the states, either). Ended up killing himself. The other guy was in his bunk when his ship got hit by another ship. He got a concussion and PTSD, and eventually killed himself. Did anyone even read a book about war?
Watching this firefight discussion back I have such respect for Brent being a self aware man and admitting how getting shot helped humble him a bit and likely saving his life. These are such important bits of wisdom to here from guys like this. You the man Brent! Much love and respect. Also Afghan "commandos" have ZERO business anywhere near a Tier 1 element for any reason aside from intelligence purposes. This is so unfortunate that our leaders are so ignorant as to force the most capable men on the planet to literally work side by side with barely capable men that dont come close to the capability or understanding of our Tier 1 force.

Good question, we tried with IR flood light , it usually does help in a dark night but for whatever reason it did not help, maybe jt was a combination of the rain, the nods fogging, the clear lens glassing fogging or the smudges on my nods from trying to wipe off the fogging constantly ,everything still looked like a bunch of big rocks down there and it wasn’t until the white I light that exposed the blankets different colors that I could really make sense of what was going on beneath me.
Someone went and said it out loud. I had a few bad days on a few deployments. But do I have PTSD? Fuck no. I have bad memories just like I do from a fatal auto accident I witnessed. That crash didn't do psychological damage and neither did combat injuries and losses. No doubt it's horrible to witness but I hate being labeled by people who really don't have half a clue. Well I don't know if Brent is willfully ignorant or what. Talking down Cuba and then talking up Nicaragua in the same breath. Daniel Ortega, Sandinista and Dictator in case he missed that. You signed up for war what did they think it was gonna be like? Even if you’re not in a combat mos you need to prepare yourself for the possibility of seeing some fucked up stuff in warzone. There is nothing normal about war and never will be
A thought just occurred to me that if some young attorney that works in the World criminal court gets a hair up their ass and tries to prosecute one of these guys for war crimes , these days of new age woke activism you just don’t know what could happen.
I really hope Brent educates himself on the physical damage/changes that happen to a brain that is suffering from TBI or PTSD. His “suck it up, you had a bad day once” mentality is woefully ignorant and very harmful - especially to first responders and veterans who may not understand why they feel the way they do (because their brain has been physically changed) and who may view getting professional help as some type of weakness - because they aren’t “sucking it up”. Brent’s comments seem to reinforce this stereotype, and unfortunately, may be potentially harming the very people his company is trying to help. Personally, I wanted to support this brand, but after listening to him espouse his opinion, which i disagree with, I’ll take my business elsewhere. Now, where we do agree, most western Drs. just want to give people a blanket diagnosis and throw pills at it. Which just compounds the problem as the patient ultimately loses their psychological homeostasis as they deal with the side effects of the different medicine.

There are tests and diagnostics. They don’t just say you have it. But provider may over use it

Good question, we tried with IR flood light , it usually does help in a dark night but for whatever reason it did not help, maybe jt was a combination of the rain, the nods fogging, the clear lens glassing fogging or the smudges on my nods from trying to wipe off the fogging constantly ,everything still looked like a bunch of big rocks down there and it wasn’t until the white I light that exposed the blankets different colors that I could really make sense of what was going on beneath me.
Someone went and said it out loud. I had a few bad days on a few deployments. But do I have PTSD? Fuck no. I have bad memories just like I do from a fatal auto accident I witnessed.
That crash didn't do psychological damage and neither did combat injuries and losses. No doubt it's horrible to witness but I hate being labeled by people who really don't have half a clue.

Well I don't know if Brent is willfully ignorant or what. Talking down Cuba and then talking up Nicaragua in the same breath. Daniel Ortega, Sandinista and Dictator in case he missed that. Really not any different than Cuba. Left wing dictator or right wing dictator they are just the opposite sides of the same coin. I have to say I do think he does a disservice to members of the armed forces who have PTSD with his suck it up buttercup comments.

He’s not doing a disservice to anybody he’s saying just because you had a bad day or couple bad days in combat doesn’t mean you need to live out your life thinking g about that bad day. Compared to other wars iraq and Afghanistan saw the least amount of combat and people who got into one gunfight coming out and saying there so fucked up compared to a tier one operate which has killed hundreds of people and been on double digit combat deployments doing missions every night seeing dozens of his friends killed or wounded in combat is kinda weak. You signed up for war what did they think it was gonna be like? Even if you’re not in a combat mos you need to prepare yourself for the possibility of seeing some fucked up stuff in warzone. There is nothing normal about war and never will be

I really hope Brent educates himself on the physical damage/changes that happen to a brain that is suffering from TBI or PTSD. His “suck it up, you had a bad day once” mentality is woefully ignorant and very harmful - especially to first responders and veterans who may not understand why they feel the way they do (because their brain has been physically changed) and who may view getting professional help as some type of weakness - because they aren’t “sucking it up”. Brent’s comments seem to reinforce this stereotype, and unfortunately, may be potentially harming the very people his company is trying to help. Personally, I wanted to support this brand, but after listening to him espouse his opinion, which i disagree with, I’ll take my business elsewhere. Now, where we do agree, most western Drs. just want to give people a blanket diagnosis and throw pills at it. Which just compounds the problem as the patient ultimately loses their psychological homeostasis as they deal with the side effects of the different medicine.
