Thanks for sharing. This from a 76 y/o who just had a hip replacement and can't wait to get back into his C5Z. Keep an eye out for similar gadgets for older people...most of my Corvette owning friends are 60+. Love your channel.
Genius idea. Thank you for sharing, Lyle. I love your videos. They are always exceptionally helpful and full of good ol' common horse sense ideas. Keep 'em coming.
I respect and admire Lyle, but this is NOT good for any continued use. It will break the area around the striker, and then You have a big problem. Ask Me how I know.
When I get into my Corvette, I put my butt towards the seat and my right leg into the floorboard, I then grab the pillar and lower myself into the seat. This prevents the twisting as you describe. I then grab my left leg and pull it up. The pillar can handle the weight of my body just fine and I'm not touching the steering wheel either.
I am 72 and my C5 has been my only car (DD) since 2000. I am 6-foot/230 lbs/lower back issues. I get in my C5 by just sitting back into the seat as you demonstrate, but I just use the metal door latch loop to put some of my weight on (vs the ledge which is lower)... works for me without the separate handle.
Awesome! I just developed sore knees playing basketball a few week ago with my youngest son, so this product will definitely help until those swelling issues heal up. My car is on a slanted driveway so my car is actually 1" off the ground when I get out and it's also in a tight spot. If others have this problem, you can also stick your left leg out as far as possible for better balance; only after you do your slide to the left like Lyle demonstrated for you in this video. By the way, Lyle is 6'11", so if he can do it, we can as well. I recommend some to give you a helping hand. Sort of like a lineman helping his running back get off the ground. I'm lucky...as soon as my wife hears that car coming, she hops out of the house to help me get out of the car first and then grab those goodies I brought home.
Unfortunately I'm here trying to figure out how to get my elderly dad back in his C5. He gifted me his car recently because he just can't get in and out of it anymore with his painfully old knees and back. His Corvette is flawless so I'll care for it as he did. Gonna do my best to keep her running perfectly for another 20 years.
Another helpful video, thanks Lyle. I have one of those support handles, i bought it to use after my hip replacement surgery. Nice to see that GM designed that little ledge in the door jam!
What are the things on the roof on the upper window weatherstripping by your ear? Been driving me crazy since i bought my c5. I assumed it was to keep the glass stable at speed??
As someone with a c5. This car is definitely not for anyone with existing back problems because even in my mid 20s i still grunt and let out a "ah fuck" everytime i get in/out.
Lyle I have an issue on my 1999 C5. I left my cell phone setting over the latch for the rear hatch back and slammed the lid on top of it and now the latch won't release allowing it to close on the driver side. I purchased a new latch striker thinking I bent it but still won't close . Pretty stupid of me but none the less it's a problem. Any ideas or do I need another solenoid assembly ?
Great idea. I have another that works for this old guy. I stand facing forward. Bend a little putting right foot in and left hand on door sill next to seat. Your hand holds you weight and just move right in. Exiting turn towards left. Left foot out at the same time left hand on door sill pushing up and out. Your way seems simpler but this works well for me.
this reminds me of a story a guy told me after I was lured to stop and chat after seeing his classic vet up on a short work riser in his open garage, about how how he bought a brand new C5, and why he sold it shortly after purchase. . He said his parking space at work was tilted so that if he didn't park in the right direction, he couldn't get out of his new car.
Correct. I couldn't find this exact version anywhere, as there are no markings or part numbers on it. The tool that I linked to does the same job as far as ingress/egress aid goes. Lyle

There is no graceful way to exit anything before 1997. One does what is necessary, and the awkwardness of entry/exit is hopefully outweighed by the extreme coolness of driving the car. :) Lyle
@@csvette Well, I suppose that I look much more awkward getting out of it when the seats are out and I had been laying on the floor, working under the dash.
This is the first time anyone has ever mentioned that the loop in the quarter panel could bend and crack...I have several customers with these who are over 300 lbs and they have never had an issue. I'm not sure how someone could bend that loop unless it had been previously damaged...I'm not doubting your experience, but I'd be curious to know if the car had been in an incident that stressed that part previously. Lyle
@@csvette I’m just assuming the loop You mention is on the interior section of the striker area? I would check it out by using the tool and observing the area around the striker, perhaps on the C5 it is rock solid with no flex. For Myself, if there is any flex at all, I would advise against using it. I guess it’s a judgement call. To be honest, I never saw related damage on a Corvette, but had to repair for it on a Toyota Camry.
@@brianw8963 On a C5 Corvette, that loop is very solid. I went out to one of our salvage cars yesterday at the warehouse and put my full weight onto one of these loops (I'm 295 lbs) TRYING to bend it, and I couldn't make it budge.

Lyle, Please do a video on C5 Convertible window leaks and how to repair. Thanks!
Beautiful information 👌

Why?
Won't the tool scratch the paint on the door opening?
Like to see a video changing out dic buttons for trip miles fuel and etc

I noticed the C7 has that metal loop on the door. Fortunately I’m pretty agile.

What is the name of the tool on Amazon?
Auto Cane or Vehicle Support Handle. There is a link in the description to one of them on Amazon, but they offer several varieties on that site. Lyle
Damn, Lyle, is that a RM on your wrist?
Hmmmmmmmmm, interesting, I always use that ledge (C6) that you pointed out.

It does not. The loop is on the door, not the body, on a C8. Lyle
