- The Lord of the Rings: Gollum reviewed by Justin Koreis on PC, also available on Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch.
Why, of all the interesting characters in The Lord of the Rings lore, would anyone want to play an entire game as Gollum? Why would one trade the solid action of prior games in this universe, like Shadow of Mordor, for busywork, uninspired and frustrating platforming, and bad stealth? It’s not clear who this is for, or what it was intended to achieve. What is clear is that it’s not fun to play, and not something to recommend to any but the most curious and dedicated Lord of the Rings fan.

The German Government also gives a 25% - 50 tax credit towards costs of video game production. This looks like if Uwe Boll produced a lotr game. Gollum is probably moonlighting as a money launderer. No one asked for this game.

Its actually an inmersive experiencie. Gollum was suposed to be tortured and to suffer inmensely in Barad Dur. In this game we get to experience this agonizing pain. This cursed game was forged in the depths of Mordor
They said that in order to fully bring the character of Gollum to life, the entire studio acted like one during this game's production. Truly incredible

A Lord of the Rings: Aragorn game would've been awesome, especially if it was set in his life prior to the films as Strider as he wandered across the lands.
Now you're talking, from the time he left Rivendell as a teenager up until meeting the Hobbits in Bree. The learning curve in the game would be immense.
One reviewer also suggested a Legolas game, which would at least attract the fangirls.
They already did an aragorn game. Its called Aragorns Quest.

It can also be a 10/10. It's IGN, you never know with them. Some of their reviewers are too dumb to appreciate greatness.
Edit. I'm not saying this game is great. All I'm saying that you can never trust IGN scores. They gave alien isolation a 6/10 and that game was a masterpiece.

Honestly, the only even slightly inspired idea from this game was the idea to make a combative internal conversation battle system out of the inner conflicts between Sméagol & Gollum; and even then they managed to half-bake one of the few compelling ideas they had.
And into this Game he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life

Should have made this game more like a Splinter Cell/Thief style game, escaping from Sauron’s forces and tracking the fellowship. They could have even had the final fight with Frodo on Mount Doom end with an alternate ending, what would happen if Gollum successfully got the ring from him and didn’t fall into the fire? What a missed opportunity.

Would have been way more interesting to make the game about Smeagle's early life and change into Gollum, could have been about his finding the ring, fighting its influence and so on, would have been way more interesting imo.

It just seems so obvious that a Gollum game should tell of his life in the goblin mountain before Bilbo. Having the Ring, fishing, killing goblin patrols, etc. Then have Bilbo show up and steal the Ring so now Gollum tried to hunt him down but is captured by agents of Sauron.

We need a game studio to get this license and make a LOTR immersive open world single player rpg like the witcher or elden ring or skyrim where you can roam around middle-earth and a race you pick and then start at different locations, like if you pick a hobbit you would start at the shire or if you are an elf you would start at the elven woods and go on an epic quest with 4 npc party members (like dragons dogma) while fighting big bosses and searching abandoned dwarven tombs in mountains fighting orca and demons and dragons. This is what we want from LOTR!!!
A gollum game should have just be a schizophrenia simulator of experiencing what it’s like to be a crazy person with multiple personalities having constant hallucinations and going mad for a ring
Those broken stealth enemy AI problems still exist today in a bunch of triple A games.
It's not that they're broken, just that they're one-dimensional with the only ability being to throw a rock (or choke an orc)

Ah, yes. Because even if it's an entirely different game from an entirely different studio about an entirely different story and character, everyone knows you can only work on one LOTR game at a time. As silly as it seems, the only reason this game got made is because the director of Daedalic Entertainment defeated the director of Monolith Productions after challenging him to a best of 3 rock, paper, scissors showdown in front of a council comprised of the descendants of JRR Tolkien himself, thus winning the right to make Gollum. Luckily for us, Monolith spent all the time they weren't allowed to be working on a SoW sequel developing one of the most advanced RPS (rock, paper, scissors) training facilities in the world to ensure nothing like this happens ever again.
the creators of SOW/SOM said that we aren't getting another sequel a bit after SOW came out
Could've made a great DLC stealth game using environment to subdue enemies. Just 'cause Gollum can't fight doesn't mean he hasn't killed or tried to kill people in LotR. And he's definitely more wicked and tricksy than most orcs.

Not the idea, but the execution. Gollum could work as some sort of challenging stealth horror game where one bad mistake could punish you. This game is neither challenging or scary. It's just 'middle earth tasks featuring gollum'.

Lets be honest we all knew this will happen. It was basically clear since the day they announced it and was evident ever since ty started showing the game.
Considering the real scale for games with IGN is 4-10, a 4 is essentially the same as a 1/10. This is not a game that should be purchased or played by anyone.
Hats off to you Ryan, most reviews I’ve seen didn’t have the stomach to even finish this game. 😂

This would be an amazing game... if it had come out on the Nintendo DS in 2006
Forspoken suddenly became a classic game because of this.
