It is one of my favorite watches im my collection... a great simplicity, confortable wearing, unique design... and a great low cost.... it is just awsome
An excellent review. This watch is awesome. The bracelet can be replaced with a quality one for $59 from Long Island Watch that turns this watch into a strong option over the Alpinist for those of us who luv day/date.
Fantastic looking watch, I'm looking at the 57 with gold hands and indices. The days of the Japanese only Sarb value are long gone and the SKX diver was never officially available here in the UK. So the fact that this style of watch is available with the same movement that you see in the prospex divers and presage cocktail times (4r35 is same without day) is to be applauded. A presage cocktail time is around £350, and turtles and samurais also at the same price. So having this available for £230 with the same movement, 100m water resistance (same as Sarb, better than presage cocktail time) and a nice 40mm case with drilled lugs is a bargain. The bracelet is not great, but is serviceable until you decide what strap to use. For less than £20 you can pick up a nice leather or NATO.
Just discovered and purchased this new addition to seikos line in the same night. Lol. People talking about price, I got mine for $220 on eBay and they’ll drop below that with a little time. The one in the NATO with the brushed bezel was an amazing idea. The reduced size, that lug to lug! Ordered me a classic gray suede leather band from bandrbands to go on a black and I’m stoked. Thanks for the in depth review!
I like it. I’d like it to be a little cheaper, of course. As an owner of many Seikos, I must say that the closest thing they have to the explorer is the SARG009.
It's a looker for sure but $275 or whatever the price is, is a bit high. I'm sure the price will drop like the 5KXs did and then the price will be right. And when Strapcode hooks it up with an upgraded strap and a 3rd party sapphire crystal, it'll be a fun project watch.
Great video. Will wait for these to drop to $150 - 180 and wait for the crystal and bracelet aftermarket to blossom before diving in. Other than that its a perfect piece...
Great comparison between the seiko's :) Still the SRPE looking very good but still something is missing , I think crown in the 3 o'clock position will change a lot !!
Why would anyone pay 275 for this? They're already discounted all through the U.S. market. Mimos is selling them for 210 to 220 IIRC right now. Once stores like Macy's, Kohls get them, prices will fall to the sub 200 Mark, just as they did for the 5KX.
Great review! Really informative. If you had to choose between the SRPE55 and the SPB117J (Alpinist), which one is the better value for money? Also, which one would you wear more often? Is the Alpinist as versatile as the SRPE55 (i.e. everyday watch, good for formal occasions)?
New a Del boy type in London who wore a beautiful gold Rolex some of the time.He wore a Seiko when the Rolex was in the pawnbrokers."Always put my hand on a monkey[£500]with that in it's original box".
Since they made an entirely new case for this daily sports watch line, i wished they just ditched the curved lug below the crown and just made it like the other side to have a more symmetrical case design like the mm200 which gives a more sophisticated look
Hope to see a slimmer and smaller mm200 in the future. I happy that seiko is starting to show us that they can make their watches smaller and slimmer just like what they did with this 5kx and the new 62mass inspired divers
This one is interesting. I will wait until the prices come down and it can be cheaply obtained from the grey market. Please make a comparison with the one on the NATO, because the bezel is brushed on that one. I need to know if I would prefer the polished or the brushed bezel.
Hey idk if you’ll read this, but when you do your comparison video between the two models could you show what they look like when you swap their straps/bracelets with the other? I’m only looking to get one SRPE and I’m trying to figure out which bezel finish makes the better strap monster. Thanks!
Seiko srpe51k1 has really good sun burst dial so does srpe53k1 and srpe57k1 has matte black dial with gold hands. And srpd has rotating bezel so choose what you want i just ordered srpe51k1 because of its sun burst dial and strap options
The one on the far left. The Alpanist. Did you get that mod'd or is that out of the box ? I like that watch with the exception of the date magnifier on the crystal. But, that is my preference. Glad to see Seiko did not come out with another Diver !!
If you think 40mm in this model is too big you won't want a 38mm, you'll be looking for something more like a 35 or 36mm, because these already wear like a 38mm.
@@AverageBros thanks for the response great vid, Looking for a day to day wearer good quality similar to the sarb033, doesn't necessarily have to be from seiko. Thanks.
All I can say is there must be some very interesting conference calls at Epson these days. I'm sorry but there's no way you would ever buy this watch over an Orient Ray with the same specs for literally half the price.
I would love to own one of those if I could buy one at what they are actually worth at $150!!! I just can't justify overpaying the $300 that they cost. There is NO bang for you buck, or value for money there at $300!!!
Be patient. They will be available for under $200 once the initial frenzy subsides. I bought a "5KX" srpd95 for $165 last year. Lol at anyone who paid the $295 msrp.
@@adamb3129I thought submariners were so great until I owned one for a couple years.. bought 2 Grand Seikos, one mech, one quartz (+/-5sec per year on the quartz) and hardly wear the sub anymore. Too flashy and recognizable.
SKX without bezel. Not a diver, not a dress watch. It's something thick with plastic glass and no intention to get wet, put on a horrible bracelet. Pretty suitable for new generations of kids. I kind of like it. It makes a good watch for $150.
Overreaction with a truth inside. We just have to wait for chinese AE specials. They will come up with a homage with a saphire, proper bracelet and NH35 or 36 movt for around 100 $. I got myself Steeldive instead of overpriced SKX and their Cpt Willard homage for 100 $ each. They Are not less of the watch than Seikos for 500 dollars. I am truly impressed.
The category is sports watch. It has hardlex (the same thing prospex divers like turtle and samurai have) if it's not for You, it's not for You, but it is a really good offer for daily use and can be worn with any sort of casual clothing, 100m wr make sure You can Even swim with it
Not really. Are you aware of the msrp of the Seiko 5 from 5 years ago? It has not doubled. Not even close. Additionally, the movement has been upgraded from what was offered 5 years ago. Almost all of the older 5 series came with the 7s movement. The new ones come with the hand winding, hackable 4r movement, so the second part of your comment is also untrue. Good job.
@@dparis2172 Seiko's value proposition has definitely gone down. Idk about all the MSRPs of old 5s, but they could be found new for $60-100 or $100-150 for the divers. I can't imagine any of these new 5s going for sub-$150 new. MSRP doesn't mean much, just look at Invicta. And yes the 4R is a bit better but that was to be expected. It would be a joke if Seiko were to still put 7S26 in watches in 2020. Movements and specs per $ have improved since the 90s and 00s, especially with microbrands and Chinese manufacturers. Seiko isn't a top value brand anymore.
There is nothing wrong with a stamped clasp from a functional perspective. Fits more flush and protrudes less than a milled clasp, making it more comfortable for me.
so they took the alpinist off the market, waited until there was no more stock and then release it again for 3 times the original price. Thats very shady
There are still plenty of SARB017's still available, they were in production for like 12yrs and it was a JDM only model, not an international release, so the pricing wasn't adjusted for other markets. So yeah, 12yrs later the new updated international release would of course cost a lot more, nothing shady about it.
Makes Absolutely no difference whatsoever, you can get 1000mtr dive watches with push in crowns, it's all about the gasket, screw down makes no difference
