My beloved late brother, a brilliant and very promising neurosurgeon was a big boc fan. This is the very last song he asked me to put on his phone to listen to, just a few hours before he passed away, aged 39. This song means so much to me
They hit you in a place you only expect religion or a really deep book/movie)loved one to hit you. It's always hard to explain to people who just aren't into them as you are, but luckily we live in the internet age where like minded people are around.
I can't believe this wasn't on an official album. It feels like an official track. The cut-up, distorted vocal sample really hits me for some reason. Feels like I'm trying to recover some long-lost childhood memory of an amazing experience with friends who I've lost contact with long ago, like my brain is trying to piece it all together but struggling to remember it all.
they use some of that kid voice sample from (Sesame Street “many me’s” season 8 ep 87 1976) in sixtyten and sunshine recorder/but yes wish this was on something officially/also and buckie high/chinook also!
Whenever I listen to this song, I feel like the strong percussion in the first minute kinda wipes me clean emotionally and makes me feel neutral. Then when the melody starts, I get drowned in my childhood memories. All the good and bad ones. I was abused and as a result had OCD for most of childhood after age 5-6. It's a weird feeling, because there are all these faint good memories that I have from age 3 to 5. But after age 6, it feels like something died in me, like that was the start of my sadness and pain. So although this song lets me mourn the loss of my childhood, it also brings up some good memories and reminds me that good times were possible in a distant place and a distant time. So maybe they'll be possible again sometime.
I feel the same with Telephasic Workshop. It's as if it "reworks" and resets my mind. I couldn't find a more fitting title for the song. About past abuse and stuff that is best left behind. A rework for your mind, at the Telephasic Workshop.
i wonder do we gravitate to this music for healing? its like animals and sometimes humans too know that theyre missing a nutrient and so seek out a maybe odd or unusual food source only semi or sub consciously/like pregnant women eating ice or frozen halapenos or something
Here's what the distorted voices are saying (borrowed from the Boc pages): "When I'm with a friend / then I feel proud, and there's a Proud Me, too. / When I'm with a friend / then I feel proud, and there's a Proud Me, too. / - Me, too. / Right now, I'm the Loving Me; isn't he cute? And after I've done a real good job - I've cleaned my room, or something like that - then I feel proud, and there's a Proud Me, too. And when I'm with a friend, and we're having a good time, then I'm the Happy Me. But when my friend has to go home, then I feel a little sad, so I turn into the Sad Me. Anyway, there sure are a lot of different Me's, just like you have a lot of different You's. Well, we're going outside to - outside to play now, I hope all the different You's have fun, too! Bye!"
this song reminds me in a way of sitting in front of the TV watching weird cartoons with sunlight pouring through the windows when I around 4 or 5 years old. I felt this way before I knew where the sample came from. I can almost remember the way it was like to feel like at that age while listening. it's really strange, and awesome. no other music does this
it more reminds me of space documentaries me and my dad used to watch, and the trips we went to the snow. good memory's of a time that'll never come again
This song is incredibly important to me. I only come back to it a couple times a year, but that's because this track breaks me. I start absolutely bawling. I lose it. I lose all control. All childhood memories and places that are now in ruin come back to life. This song is so truly special to me, I cannot put it into words. I'm just rambling but this song is the only song that I will cry to it every time no matter what. I cannot thank boc enough for how they've changed my life; my way of thinking; my perception on beauty and art; my values of what I cherish most in life. I somehow find it impossible that music has an effect on me like this, specifically boc. why them? how are they so genius and perfect? I truly wonder in awe how they manage to do it. I just feel all over the place and boc always helps me realign, an old friend telling you its going to be okay and remember the good times. they are cruel in their nostalgia, preying on your optimism for better days like the past. I cannot think of any other ways to describe the amount of depth this band contains. It feels never ending. They are infinitely replayable. Because they are you. You insert yourself in the songs they create. they perfectly set up everything for you, all you need to do is soak it in and add yourself in the picture. Masters of their craft. I often wonder if I'll ever feel this way about a band ever again. they're powerful. They allow you to access parts of your mind you would have otherwise never been able to access. tapping into your subconscious through detuned melodies and distorted vocals. Thank you
...in fact, I consider a serious real friend the people who likes BOC, even if we didnt know each other, like right now im reading the comments about this song...
Sesame Street - Many Me's. But basically due to awesome editing of the sample, sounds like ground control talking to a far away astronaut. This alone makes me think of BoC as a really great group and often undervalued.
Boards of Canada has this ability to pull ambivalent tears out of me in almost any setting The emotions they draw out of me cut like a knife I’m crying right now thinking about how it does that It’s so beautiful So many of the comments on any given BOC video do the same To know that other people are getting the same or very similar feelings is comforting I want to say God bless you & I love you to everyone
BOC still sounds so brand new. My favorite Scottish group, bar none... makes me haggis blood proud! - now if we could get Aphex Twin and BOC to breed somehow we'd have music to take us into the new light. Sorry, been a long day.
@@vico805 - my best guess, and I don’t even think I’m right, is that the types of people that are passionate about BoC tend to be intrapersonal people, and therefore you are less likely to come across the fact that you are passionate about the same relatively-obscure Scottish instrumental music 🤷♂️ but I dunno… I wear my BoC gear all the time, and once in a blue moon, very very rarely, someone will give me a passing ‘hell yeah’…. But I’m dying for one of my friends/co-workers to flip at the mention of Boards of Canada… I naively expect only the chillest, and most interesting, people to love BoC
These, along Split your infinites, are my dearest songs of BoC. And I keep telling that these are the two songs I want to be put on at my funeral or, better, if I will have the luck of listening to them in my last moments.
This song never fails to make me feel... i don't even know. Every time I put this on I feel like I'm experiencing emotions that I've never felt before. I just feel so light and fluffy and like nothing else matters except what's here and now. Boards of Canada is absolutely incredible for supplying this sound of undescribable joy mixed with yearning nostalgia. forever one of my favourites
Aah Whitewater, the track they never officially released but possibly amongst their top 5. And that's saying something because they've made so many brilliant ones. Only they can make music like this; where the pieces shouldn't really fit together but somehow do, because it evokes memories of things we experienced or think we experienced. Subliminal, psychedelic genius.
It’s funny. In the lyrical loop in the background of the song, the boy talks about his “different me’s.” But at the end of the song, the lyrics ends with “and there’s a sad me too, anyway...” I think they intentionally ended the song with the sad me, pointing to how we feel deep sadness when feeling nostalgic for all the different me’s we had in childhood.
I can imagine walking through a majestic forest and coming to a beautiful white river with spots of blue seeping through. The water is flowing rapidly downstream and the sound drowns out all other sound. I set my pack down and sit by the edge of the river and contemplate my existence. Here I am home. I find solace in this place....

They have a way of projecting what makes a person. They use samples of certain things (quotes etc) and twist music to make us feel something new. It's like learning about the human feelings and what makes us who we are.
Someone accidentally hitting the record and play buttons accidentally at that point in the tape. Happened many a time. Does seem to add something to the track though.
I think about the past, I think about the future, I think about places which don't exist and places where I have been before. I mostly think that I want to experience it all , through this song.
@hitandrun82 No kidding. This is - BY FAR - the best comment I've seen on You Tube in many years. Reading the actual words along with the sample track that I have never been able to decipher is cathartic to say the least. Do you know what the source of the sample is?
Whitewater randomly came on my playlist while I was waaaay up in the Appalachians shooting time lapses of white water rapids on large format and it was a brief 6 minute period of hyperfocus that I won't forget and the pictures came out great. Don't try to tell me the universe isn't connected.
All their instruments were so analog, and this was 1996 right? The drums, especially the snare seems like it took weeks to make, especially with the stuff they had back then. It's so unique...
Boards of Canada . in one and in all has a mesmorizing capture of life with infinte feelings and depicts the best and worse in all of us. So life is what it was intended to be . The only recorded experience that plays within us and we keep until we go .... until then repeat the best parts that you know meant the most even if it means breaking down to the only time anything meant something to you when you had nothing but life to give.
The lyrics (PART 2) But when my friend has to go home, then I feel a little sad, so I turn into the Sad Me. Anyway, there sure are a lot of different me's, just like you have a lot of different you's!
Well, I'm going outside to - outside to play now, I hope all the different you's have fun too. Bye!
And, when I'm with a friend, and I feel proud, and there's a proud me too
(2x)
Me too. Right now, I'm the Loving Me; isn't he cute? And after I've done a real good job - I've cleaned my room, or something like that, and I feel proud, and there's a proud me too

This is - BY FAR - the best comment I've seen on You Tube in many years. Reading the actual words along with the sample track that I have never been able to decipher is cathartic to say the least. Do you know what the source of the sample is?
The origin of everything is also found in this music
These days we need to gear strap ourselves so as not to fall.
Whitewater randomly came on my playlist while I was waaaay up in the Appalachians shooting time lapses of white water rapids on large format and it was a brief 6 minute period of hyperfocus that I won't forget and the pictures came out great.
Don't try to tell me the universe isn't connected.
how can sounds feel like these ones do?
chords like the legendary rap song "93 til infinity"
That tune stays more on one chord. The chord progression for Whitewater (D# A# F C G ) is the same movement as Hey Joe, just in G.
The lyrics are from the "i feel proud" speech in seseme street
This song got me through quarantine
All their instruments were so analog, and this was 1996 right? The drums, especially the snare seems like it took weeks to make, especially with the stuff they had back then. It's so unique...
I owe you for this one (: well played
(if music is the key, BOC unlock all the doors)
I'm stealing that phrase ♥️
Still one of my favourits of BoB

A place of refuge.

Oh wow, I didn't realize this was the lyrics to the song until like the 30th time I listened to it.

You win Mr.Olson.
Thanks to BoC, I have also went to make music in my own style, and as my best friend summarized my work so far : "... anything can be music!" :))
"i turn into a proud me"
If music is a language BOC are Esperanto.
