The Ukranian forces in the game also seem to have access to some Russian-only artillery, so they might be collaborating seeing the common danger of the Zone. In any case, during the Soviet Union it made no difference, so the joke is intact hehe.
That almost happened to me about 5 minutes before this. I pressed quick save RIGHT after dying to a suprise anomaly. If I had done it a quarter of a second sooner I would have been fucked.

If you shoot at the unknown and they swarm you with tanks, they're Russian. If you shoot at the unknown and they return precise shots over your head, they're British. If you shoot at the unknown and they return fire with sporadic machine gun fire, they're German. If you shoot at the unknown and nothing happens for five minutes until your position gets shelled by artillery, they're American. While I know S.T.A.L.K.E.R. takes place in a Slavic nation, I can't help but feel like they took the American approach on this one.
I believe the joke was “if your position gets obliterated by artillery, they’re Russian.” And “if it’s quiet for little bit and then your position is pounded to dust by aircraft, they’re American.” So yeah, it’s definitely applicable here.
