    The green seed capsule that was removed has to left to dry before the seeds can be removed...

    Hi! Thanks for this! How long must you wait before the pods are "ready"? I've taken some from recently spent flowers and the inside of the pods is white. No tiny black seeds. Help!

    Great video. Can one take those capsules when they are still green, shortly after the florwers have become capsules, or is it better to whait? I see you took them being still green... When is it actually the best month to harvest them?

    The seeds are ripe when the pod is brown and just starting to develop cracks. There will be a few cracks and some may have fallen but plenty left. You can pick some brown ones without cracks. The covering will be brittle and break easily. If ripe seeds are ready they will fall out. The pods ripen from the bottom to top so you will have time to collect seeds over
    several days. You can bring something to catch the seeds or snip off the rip
    pods and put them in a large dish. You can rub them together in your hands
    and the seeds will fall out of the pods.

    Mike The Garden, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems the seed pod you get the seeds out of is different from both of the ones you picked off the plant? Both of those are still green, while the one you release seeds from is brown.
    This makes all the difference: The green ones are not ready. The brown on IS ready. The trick is to find brown ones that haven't cracked open on their own and had their seeds dispersed by the wind. Seems a narrow window. I came to your video for a hint about how to catch them at that point, alas.

      Cut down the entire stalks after flowering. Keep them and wait until the seeds to turn brown

    Useful video. I have foxgloves that have naturally grown in my garden. It started with 1 and I have a few. 2 appeared in a plant pot which was meant to have bulbs. I can already see some seed pods lower down but no doubt while it is still flowering is too soon. I'll keep an eye out. Very interesting. I had no idea that inside the seeds are so tiny!

    Do you use general use compost for the seeds or just the seedlings ...
    I find some mixes have too many sticks and clumps of wood ...
    Do you have any reccomendations ?
    Do you allow the plant to fully dry out or should it be kept moist ?

    • @MechanicalPigg
      @MechanicalPigg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say go with a potting soil type mix for the seeds then when then nioce them to compost when they establish but that's probs more of a general rule of thumb idk if this plants seeds specifically like a compost mix with organic materials like wood

    What I do is mark the foxglove that I want to take seed from, because once the flowers are gone it's hard to remember if for example it was a white one. Then I just wait for the pods to turn brown and tap the seeds into an envelope.

    I recently bought my first Foxglove and it was already in bloom. Now, i've read that FG's do not bloom the first year, only the next year. Its well over a month and all the blooms are gone and does not seem to show any signs of reblooming this year...So the moral of this story is not to buy them at garden centers if they are in full bloom?

      @@roryguinness I'm in Georgia. Very hot this year, over 100 degrees so I planted mine in an area where they get morning sun but then shade the rest of the day. Since it is so hot I lightly water them daily. I'm really surprised at how well they are doing. They are actually doing much better than my Hollyhocks!😮

      +ennrill Hi I'm not sure we have had a few days at zero but I will go and look tomorrow to let you know if they wilted or not. I harvested so many seeds I would love to know how you plan to grow them inside.

    • @Sunnbuzz
      @Sunnbuzz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be clear I didn't harvest any of the seedlings to bring inside that were growing, so I'll check to outside to see what happened to them.

      Its already freezing outside here in Sask so my plan is to start the seeds indoors and just transplant them outside in the spring. I have a growlight I can use while they are inside..

    • @segagenesis1989

      Hi Audrey, you essentially are simply loosening the soil in order to pry the seedlings from the tray. As they are tender, you should not be picking up the plant from the stem. I hope the information helps.

    I thought foxgloves were extremely toxic foliage and also there seeds are too?

    • @gaelleonard8830
      @gaelleonard8830 ปีที่แล้ว

      They ARE. He should not really be handling them without gloves..but its mainly if any part of the plant is eaten..even the tiny seed are toxic.

  • @deborahparr6127

    I noticed that your seeds are black. When I cracked mine open I don't see any back seeds but little tiny light brown seeds. In fact I'm not sure they are seeds at all.

    • @StrandedThings
      @StrandedThings 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here, I cracked open a bunch of pods in different stages of brown and all there was inside was a tiny bit of light brown powdery residue around the center 'stem' - nothing I would call seeds at all.

    • @trouts4444

      @@StrandedThings Green pods are not ripe with fully formed seeds. The brown pods starting to develop a few cracks are ready for harvesting seeds.
