- The Jack the Ripper case remains unsolved to this very day. But why?
Perhaps one of the biggest reasons was the rather abundant setbacks the police faced in trying to solve the case?
Revision notes:
- Police used dogs successfully in trials, however, forgot to pay the owner so were refused the opportunity to use them again for the actual investigation
- The investigation depicted the murderer as Jewish, feeding antisemitism
- People were able to walk over the crime scene
- Vast areas of Whitechapel were ruled by gangs
- Evidence in the form of chalk writing on a wall saying ‘The Juwes are the men that will not be blamed for nothing’ was washed off because of police rivalry
- The officer who ordered this claimed it was to prevent antisemitism
- Penny dreadfuls criticised the police
- Over 300 postcards and letters were sent to the Police and Newspapers from people claiming to be the Ripper
- Police thought the ‘Dear Boss’ letter was important enough to reproduce in the hope someone would recognise the handwriting
- 12 years before fingerprinting was first used
- It was in a time pre forensic techniques
- Scientists at the time couldn’t tell the difference between human and animal blood
- The collection of police data in a database was a reasonably new idea, so the database was not big enough to be useful yet
- Crime scene photography was a relatively new concept, so underdeveloped
- Frustrated locals - a group of businessmen and traders - set up the Whitechapel vigilance committee on the 10th September
- They offered rewards to anyone with useful information
- The committee took to the streets every night, armed with burning planks of wood, whistles and hob-nail boots, making as much noise as possible, which disrupted the police investigation
- The committee sent them on false leads & disrupted them as best they could
- This may have been politically motivated to help the SDF in the run-up to the London county council elections by making the government look stupid

Bc5 5875 I guess the spec is the best place to start... But that might be a good video idea actually (as making it'd help me too) - I may try to do a whole paper summary paper 1 (if I get a chance), it'd probably be a bit messy as it would be quite rushed and I wouldn't have time to animate it. But, would that be helpful?
You could go through the spec in order?
qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/GCSE/History/2016/specification-and-sample-assessments/9781446925867_GCSE2016_L12_History_Web.pdf I'd suggest making flashcards on key statistics (e.g. "The estimated number of homeless people in Whitechapel" on one side and then "1000" on the other), either with physical flashcards, or on quizlet. If you've got a copy of the textbook or a revision guide, that'll make your life easier, if not, you'll have to do some digging.

It's a big topic, and you don't need to memorise every last fact. Just make sure you understand all the bits, as you'll be surprised what'll come back to you in the exam.

@@Alonglongtimeago There's a theory there were multiple Rippers, as similar crimes echoed across Europe. The idea of the Ripper has been romanticised to the point where parts lack credibility.

Was Jack The Ripper a human and died, or a demon that's still living and hiding somewhere? Who knows.
The second theory sounds rather a lot like that episode of Black Butler to me...
