The funny thing is discord turn makes sense in one regard. He thought that he essentially had discovered a friend that was a better fit for him than anyone else. He thought that he was making a genuine friendship with Terik and in doing so gained a friend who wouldn’t constrain him who wouldn’t tell him that he’s not allowed to do things. He wasn’t entirely sure so he continued to help him gain magic, but he was always waiting for the other shoe drop. But the Centar gave him the necklace. He thought that it was a genuine gift, and that it truly meant that he was his friend. That’s why he gave him the only information that he was holding from him. And it’s why that he genuinely did not see the betrayal coming.

Exactly my thoughts he thought he could have his cake and eat it too by having a friend who would let him have all the chaos he would want while having a friend. I also think Tirek hit a nerve with Discord describing his friendship as a new imprisonment. He probably thought that it was.

The entire episode where he pretended to be sick, was as a test to see if twilight actually cared enough to try and look for a cure for. He was still hesitant until the necklace at which point he decided to fully put his chips with the centaur, throwing away his friendship with fluttershy but commenting on how it was obvious that this was going to happen because he thought that it genuinely was that they would all get sick of him and want nothing to do with him anymore. So when Terik turns on him it genuinely surprised him because he didn’t realize that he had replaced a genuine friendship with a toxic one. And in the end, Twilight has to ask "Who is my Friend?" and answers "Everyone. The way of Harmony means treating everyone like a friend - even the asshole who betrayed me".

I think that it's super fitting for Discord to have a setback at this point in the series, because we all doubted he was ever truly reformed before and being tempted to have total free reign with his magic again for his character just makes so much sense. Say what you want about him, but I just like that he took time to truly change throughout the series, especially once he realised how much he valued -Fluttershy- his friendships. At least, I like it better than being blasted by a rainbow and suddenly being perpetually good.
I knew there was a problem with Celestia's plan with Tirek not knowing about Twilight from the beginning. And that would be that DISCORD KNOWS! And he's in cahoots with Tirek! What's going to stop Discord from telling him instantly?!
Glad to see this Season 4 finale showed callbacks to previous episodes with each Mane Six member holding an object they received as a token of appreciation from whomever ponies they’ve helped. They were beneficial in their cause against Lord Tirek!
Equestria Daily did an interview with one of the FiM directors, Jim Miller, where they asked him about the "national brony landmark being blown up and replaced with a literal giant middle finger". He said the castle and its design came from Hasbro's toy department, so they came up with the 6 keys so the castle feels earned instead of coming out of nowhere. And they decided to destroy the library for the emotional impact, since they couldn't kill off characters in this show. And also to justify Twilight actually moving into the castle. In fact in the next season there's a whole episode about... well, you'll see. His whole interview is fascinating with how the behind the scenes relationship between the toys/corporate and the show goes, and how these story decisions come to be.
That's one real strong point of this show: working around the constraints of the merch department's demands and actually making something good out of it. They want a new pink princess so that they can actually make a show-accurate Celestia toy instead of arbitrarily making her pink? Introduce Cadance and give her a meaningful emotional connection to Twilight. They wanna make a princess toy of Twilight? Make a story about Twilight earning her wings by performing a great feat, followed by a season-long story arc of her feeling conflicted about whether she deserves it. They want a new castle playset? Have the library, one of the most iconic landmarks in the show destroyed in a truly shocking moment and have the 6 keys arc to make the castle feel earned, and have a follow up episode to genuinely show the impact of the library's destruction.
Twilight vs Tirek was the most hype thing I ever saw in MLP history! It was like Dragon Ball Z but with ponies! I showed it to my friends who didn't watch MLP and their brains actually short-circuited!!! It made no sense to them or to me either!
When I first watched it I felt like I was making a shocked expression, why, damn, look at that explosion animations and all those movements. They jumped from a cute pony story in season 1 to a season with lore and an entitled fight
THE VALIDATION!!! What for me was the moment watching this show REALLY came into focus with being actually AWESOME! There were plenty of moments here and there with episodes, but this felt HUGE!!! >3

Congrats on finishing season 4 Scoot, And I look forward to when you start your reactions to EQG: Rainbow Rocks and season 5 "Twilight's Kingdom" parts 1 and 2 are another one of my all time favorite season finales in the FIM series! It was interesting to see what Tirek looked like in the G4 artstyle, Fun fact: Tirek is yet another leftover character from previous mlp generations G1 I believe. And to this day, The fight scene between Tirek and Twilight is still considered to be one of the most badass scenes in the entire fim series which it is! And it kinda wasn't a surprise that Tirek even betrayed Discord which was deserved since Discord betrayed the Mane 6 which was a classic double, Double cross scene. And even though Discord deserved it when Tirek took his magic away at least he seemed to somewhat learn a lesson from it. I instantly loved "You'll Play Your Part" and "Let the Rainbow Remind You" they became two of my favorite season 4 songs! In fact I found "Play Your Part" to be a somewhat relatable song since it was about Twilight having trouble trying to figure out how she fits into Equestria's royal hierarchy, Because you know when you're new at something it's hard to figure out what place you have in it and all that. And finally, Twilight's new castle was totally badass too. Though it still sucks that the Golden Oaks Library was destroyed. A lot of people in the fandom were really upset about that, Especially since the Castle of Friendship was only created as a for Hasbro to say "Buy our toys" but still.
Tirek and Scarpan (along with spike actually) were characters from the original mlp tv special that aired in the 80's. At this point, much of the Brony fandom had taken interest in past mlp media, so the return of Tirek was a pretty big deal at the time. As a first generation mlp fan (I was born in the early 80's), it was pretty exciting for us too to get some acknowledgement from the show writers.
An epic finale, with one hell of a fight! yeah, this still stands as one of the best finales of the show. You also don't quite get what a HUGE deal bringing in Tirak was, he is THE legacy MLP villain, the Big Bad of the very first MLP special back in Gen 1, and pretty much treated as Pony Satan in most fanfics to use him prior to him actually showing up in canon. And they made him not only a powerful threat, but also a clever one, able to talk his way through a problem as easily as just smash it. Yeah, this finale was epic.
Season 4 I’ll always be the season thats my season. The first season I watched. But season 5 is also just amazing. It was the first season I followed episode by episode as they came out. And ITS UP NEXT!!!
Man I remember being there when these episodes released. The emotions this finale made me feel was insane. I wish I could go back and watch it for the first time again.
Best season finale in my opinion. The ones to come are still good, and this one has its flaws, but you cannot beat that fight scene between Twilight and Tirek. It's epic!
I really don't like the Rainbow Power forms. Rarity's mane looks like it's trying to eat her head. Other than that, I love this season finale. The fight between Twilight and Tirek is epic, especially in a franchise that tends to shy away from fight scenes. And Discord's arc was really well-done. Since being released he has been sort of playing along at being good, but this is when he truly understands what it means to be a good friend. Oh, and there is an extended version of the "Let the Rainbow Remind You" song if you're interested in listening to it.

I always felt that Discord was kinda justified in turning on the ponies (except for Fluttershy). He genuinely put an effort into being a friend to everyone after the reform. Even if he was weird and kinda annoying to them, he WAS trying. But Fluttershy was the ONLY one to try to connect with him and be a friend right back. Tired was also right that they only treated him like an errand boy. Fluttershy was literally Discord’s only real friend, so, although it sucks that he turned on Fluttershy, is it weird or even wrong that he had zero loyalty to the ponies?

discord was planning something, he knew about they keys because he marked them in the book for twilight. He knew twilight didn’t have her key so he planned his betrayal so she could get it and open the box. discord knows tirek from their past, we know this because of the way tirek greeted discord and there is a comic confirming this. so discord was there when tirek and his brother attacked the first time and he also knew the type of person tirek is. With this knowledge he was able to devise a plan to get twilight the key.
i think discord didn't really betrayed them sure he joined tirek but he had a plan if he didn't do that twilight wouldn't get the key so i think he had a plan at beginning he was thinking i thik it was about the whole plan he didn't told tirek about twilight not because he didn't knew if he can trust him but because it was part of his plan and he let tirek take all magic so twilight could open the chest!

(Not counting the series finale) What's great is that the next season starts the Map arc and then we'll be getting to see various parts of Equestria. bro, discord has been manipulated by Tirek, its not Discord Fault, it was Tirek Fault, Tirek wanted this, and in the first time Discord was manipulated but the second time he remember it, so its not his fault
So a common theory from the Fandom that I've always enjoyed and personally believed is that Discord didn't really betray the ponies. We know that Discord is a manipulator at heart, without his "betrayal" Twilight wouldn't get her key lesson in Friendship. The others had their elements put to the test and were given an object to represent it, Twilight never did until now. Discord also gives Twilight the book of lessons they've learned and bookmarked the important parts ahead of time. At the end looking at everything as a whole it comes off that Discord planned it all from the start. He knows Twilight very well and it shows time and again so playing the game and manipulating pieces to go where they need to be is exactly his MO. Playing up the part of betrayal and letting everyone believe he betrayed them helped sell the lesson
I'm not a fan of that theory because it kinda cheapens Discord's character arc. You also have to remember that the lessons also had to make someone learn from the Mane Six as well such as Coco, Silver Shill, Cheese Sandwich, etc. Discord pretending to betray the ponies flies in the face of the lesson.
You should watch Centaurworld it’s like Adventure Time mixed with My Little Pony and has amazing songs. Three songs I recommend listening to are Hello Rainbow Road, Fragile things, and Nowhere King.
In Discord's defense, _only_ Fluttershy ever seemed to truly care about him. I don't blame him for this. BUT WHAT IF!!! That _Whole thing_ was his plan so that Twilight could get her key to the box? He knew what he was doing when he gave her the medallion.
Discord isn't entirely blameless. While the rest of the girls could have been nicer, Discord gave no reason for them to trust him. Afterall, his vines kidnapped Celestia and Luna, nearly killed the Tree of Harmony, withheld information from the girls to save Equestria, and intended to ruin Twilight and Cadance's day for selfish reasons.

Twilight vs Tirek was the most hype thing I ever saw in MLP history! It was like Dragon Ball Z but with ponies! I showed it to my friends who didn't watch MLP and their brains actually short-circuited!!! It made no sense to them or to me either!
When I first watched it I felt like I was making a shocked expression, why, damn, look at that explosion animations and all those movements.
They jumped from a cute pony story in season 1 to a season with lore and an entitled fight

"Twilight's Kingdom" parts 1 and 2 are another one of my all time favorite season finales in the FIM series! It was interesting to see what Tirek looked like in the G4 artstyle, Fun fact: Tirek is yet another leftover character from previous mlp generations G1 I believe.
And to this day, The fight scene between Tirek and Twilight is still considered to be one of the most badass scenes in the entire fim series which it is!
And it kinda wasn't a surprise that Tirek even betrayed Discord which was deserved since Discord betrayed the Mane 6 which was a classic double, Double cross scene. And even though Discord deserved it when Tirek took his magic away at least he seemed to somewhat learn a lesson from it.
I instantly loved "You'll Play Your Part" and "Let the Rainbow Remind You" they became two of my favorite season 4 songs! In fact I found "Play Your Part" to be a somewhat relatable song since it was about Twilight having trouble trying to figure out how she fits into Equestria's royal hierarchy, Because you know when you're new at something it's hard to figure out what place you have in it and all that.
And finally, Twilight's new castle was totally badass too. Though it still sucks that the Golden Oaks Library was destroyed. A lot of people in the fandom were really upset about that, Especially since the Castle of Friendship was only created as a for Hasbro to say "Buy our toys" but still.

Tirek and Scarpan (along with spike actually) were characters from the original mlp tv special that aired in the 80's. At this point, much of the Brony fandom had taken interest in past mlp media, so the return of Tirek was a pretty big deal at the time. As a first generation mlp fan (I was born in the early 80's), it was pretty exciting for us too to get some acknowledgement from the show writers.
An epic finale, with one hell of a fight! yeah, this still stands as one of the best finales of the show. You also don't quite get what a HUGE deal bringing in Tirak was, he is THE legacy MLP villain, the Big Bad of the very first MLP special back in Gen 1, and pretty much treated as Pony Satan in most fanfics to use him prior to him actually showing up in canon. And they made him not only a powerful threat, but also a clever one, able to talk his way through a problem as easily as just smash it. Yeah, this finale was epic.

I really don't like the Rainbow Power forms. Rarity's mane looks like it's trying to eat her head. Other than that, I love this season finale. The fight between Twilight and Tirek is epic, especially in a franchise that tends to shy away from fight scenes. And Discord's arc was really well-done. Since being released he has been sort of playing along at being good, but this is when he truly understands what it means to be a good friend. Oh, and there is an extended version of the "Let the Rainbow Remind You" song if you're interested in listening to it.

I always felt that Discord was kinda justified in turning on the ponies (except for Fluttershy). He genuinely put an effort into being a friend to everyone after the reform. Even if he was weird and kinda annoying to them, he WAS trying. But Fluttershy was the ONLY one to try to connect with him and be a friend right back. Tired was also right that they only treated him like an errand boy. Fluttershy was literally Discord’s only real friend, so, although it sucks that he turned on Fluttershy, is it weird or even wrong that he had zero loyalty to the ponies?

idk if anyone mentioned it, but Tirek and Scorpan are actually antagonists from the OG My Little Pony! Specifically the movie My Little Pony: Rescue at Midnight Castle. I don't think/know if they ever appeared in the main series.

discord was planning something, he knew about they keys because he marked them in the book for twilight. He knew twilight didn’t have her key so he planned his betrayal so she could get it and open the box. discord knows tirek from their past, we know this because of the way tirek greeted discord and there is a comic confirming this. so discord was there when tirek and his brother attacked the first time and he also knew the type of person tirek is. With this knowledge he was able to devise a plan to get twilight the key.

bro, discord has been manipulated by Tirek, its not Discord Fault, it was Tirek Fault, Tirek wanted this, and in the first time Discord was manipulated but the second time he remember it, so its not his fault
So a common theory from the Fandom that I've always enjoyed and personally believed is that Discord didn't really betray the ponies. We know that Discord is a manipulator at heart, without his "betrayal" Twilight wouldn't get her key lesson in Friendship. The others had their elements put to the test and were given an object to represent it, Twilight never did until now. Discord also gives Twilight the book of lessons they've learned and bookmarked the important parts ahead of time.
At the end looking at everything as a whole it comes off that Discord planned it all from the start. He knows Twilight very well and it shows time and again so playing the game and manipulating pieces to go where they need to be is exactly his MO. Playing up the part of betrayal and letting everyone believe he betrayed them helped sell the lesson
I'm not a fan of that theory because it kinda cheapens Discord's character arc. You also have to remember that the lessons also had to make someone learn from the Mane Six as well such as Coco, Silver Shill, Cheese Sandwich, etc. Discord pretending to betray the ponies flies in the face of the lesson.

Discord isn't entirely blameless. While the rest of the girls could have been nicer, Discord gave no reason for them to trust him. Afterall, his vines kidnapped Celestia and Luna, nearly killed the Tree of Harmony, withheld information from the girls to save Equestria, and intended to ruin Twilight and Cadance's day for selfish reasons.
