The swords he made were said to have to draw blood before they could be sheathed, even forcing their wielders to wound themselves, and were said to consume their wielder with bloodlust even to the point of suicide.
Why? The thing is ridiculously powerful, it completely bypasses healing factors and can slice through adamantium with ease. It would fucking end Dante and generally anyone else he'd go up against who had the ability to rapidly heal.

They pretty much have both durability and regeneration. In every DMC game (except for DMC 2 I believe), Dante has gotten stabbed or impaled by his own sword, only to get up moments later and showing no sign of injury on his body.
