The most realistic weapons / armor / fighting, in an ANIME??

This anime series portrays the Hundred Years War between England and France (1337 - 1453), with fantasy elements like witches, succubi, angels and magic thrown into the mix.
The clothing (except the fantasy characters), architecture, armor and weapons are all realistic and historically accurate, with a lot more attention to detail than I've ever seen in any other movie or series, be it animated or live-action. Clearly a lot of research went into this, which I appreciate a lot.
The battle scenes are also very convincing. The knights and men-at-arms fight with actual skill and tactics like real warriors would. These are easily the most realistic scenes I've seen so far, which answers one of the most common questions that people have been asking me.
If you like entertainment with educational value (and if you like sex jokes as well), give "Maria the Virgin Witch" a try.

Anime never cease to surprise me. All though a bit too weird and over the top a lot of the times, there also shows which really impresses me, like this one, at least it seems so, haven't watched it, yet. Will be the first one set in medieval times, and maybe the first one without any horror aspect to it, unless it's bloodier than it looks like.
Yeah I don't really watch much anime, and those I have seen are mostly horror.

    • @nathanbrown8680

The Horned King I think there are actually at least three genres under the term anime/manga. There seems to be ridiculous stuff targeted at teenage boys, ridiculous stuff targeted at teenage girls, and mostly serious stuff targeted at adults. A lot of the stuff that gets the best reviews for realism in visual science fiction is also anime or manga and a lot gets good reviews for intellectual depth. And then there's the low brow action or romance schlock that tends to color so many perceptions.

    • @knechtor5648
      @knechtor5648 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Nathan Brown pretty much true. sadly thee is not a lot of good stuff coming out these days, mostly the stuff targeted at teenage boys with lot's of girls that fall for the generic highschool boy main character. and a few not so ridiculous thing aimed at teenage girls with "unlikely lovestory" theme or something similar.

    • @pmmmsvd5383

Nathan Brown You're talking about shounen, shoujo and seinen. These are not genre but target demographics. Shounen means literally young boy, shoujo means young girl and seinen are men over ~18. Genres are for example Sci-fi, Romance or Drama.

Thanks to Skallagrim mentioning this on another video I watched this anime and was blown away by the level of detail and accuracy.
The knights have better quality gambesons made up of more pieces with lots of gussets around the shoulder/armpit region. The mercenaries have reasonable gambesons made from simpler patterns while the archers have the simplest gambesons.
It must be one of the only mediæval shows where historically accurate underwear is shown, almost nobody shows braies and hose worn correctly but here we have a friggen cartoon putting everything else to shame. They obviously had an excellent research team/advisors and listened to them.
The other thing was that religion was handled very well. It wasn't anti-anything, it showed the mass of the population as Christian and a fair chunk of the plot revolved around Maria having to deal with those beliefs. The people acted as you would expect of people of that time rather than trying to foist modern morality onto an historical setting.

I feel like you would enjoy A Practical Guide to Evil. It's a realistic fantasy series which spends a lot of time focusing on the weapons and tactics employed, and which has an unusual magic system largely based on the idea that you can gain power and influence by taking on an archetypal role in the story, and it really goes into the weirdness of how realism interacts with dramatic storytelling. For example, one of the best tacticians of the Dread Empire famously commanded his Legions of Terror never to engage an enemy force that clearly had no chance of survival, because they would always pull off an impossible victory against the odds.

Another anime that contains historically accurate combat is the Berserk series.
Yes, I am aware that the main character's great-sword is rather far-fetched at times, but I also want to point out that the weapons & combative tactics utilized by the other characters in that series is completely accurate too, historic-wise.
I could name other anime's that also employ historical accuracy, but I'll leave that to the future commentators to come.

+The Waiting Flame Pretty much. There were I think a couple other characters in the show who were seen cutting through solid plate armor with a sword, but other than stuff like that, the weapons and tactics are fairly historically accurate. Though the idea behind that series was more to make Guts seem like a mythic hero such as Hercules, Achilles, or Beowulf by showing how he was capable of accomplishing things no historic warrior could. So it could also be argued that the series is also a historically accurate representation of an ancient story about a mythic/legendary hero.

You've summed up perfectly why I love Akira and find it addictive; it's that mixture of gritty realistic detail and hypercharged scifi/fantasy elements. Everything from the clothing to a bureaucrat's clipboard to the bonzai tree in a politician's office to the police riot gear is meticulously detailed and realistic - which makes a perfect foil for the insane psychological horror and scifi weirdness when it happens. A film where everything is hypercharged, surreal and weightless is hard to invest in or believe; a film that's 90% grounded realism and 10% surreal madness makes those surreal elements much more memorable and convincing by using them sparingly. The contrast is what gives it zest. (Breaking Bad uses the same formula.)

The magic makes sense from a historical fiction stand point actually. John of Arch is referenced many times in the hundred year war to have powers of a mystical persuasion. Granted most of her magic was said to be clairvoyance based, but she was even tried and burned as a witch at some point apparently. Belief in magic was alive and well during the time, so it's not totally far-fetched to include elements like this in such an anime.
Either way it's cool as hell. Thanks for the recommendation Skallagrim!

Well, the gun lance is really just a rifle with a stock replaced with a stick and a mechaism to slide the bayonet over the barrel. That actually sounds pretty simple to make
. I'm not much of a gun person, but it might be just a matter of cutting a slight notch into the barrel for the spear blade to be able to lock into.

I would recommend a manga called Wolfsmund. It is inspired by the independence of Swiss. The weapons, armor, and fighting style are drawn with great details and historically accurate, I assume. In later part it also includes an amazing seige with all the brilliant tactics for both attack and defense side. The whole manga is dark and brutal, just like medieval war.

The Anime also depicted other aspect of medieval European life accurately as well. One thing I noticed is in episode 1, one of the female character use a drop spindle to make yarn. They way she use it is very accurate. Whoever made this anime took time and effort to research properly. Much less can be said about most modern movies and TV show nowadays.

  • @DanStaal

I kinda wonder why you're surprised, in a way: Anime isn't a genre, really. It's a style - which can be (and is) used to make many different genres of movies and TV shows. Some are realistic, some aren't. Some are well researched, some aren't. It's just that Japan went into animated films more than into live action, in many ways - so their film industry is more focused around films in that style.

I’d say anime is on the borderline between being a style and genre. Ur absolutely right about anime being able to have many different genres (even more than live action tv shows), but there is also a very mainstream type and perception of anime. Shows like dragon ball, naruto, attack on titan, and other unrealistic shows are the most representative of what’s commonly portrayed in anime and what is popular. So I could understand if someone were to be surprised if they found an anime that’s different or subverts typical tropes, etc.

Joe Smith well yeah but those are shounen. What hes found is most likely a seinen. Shounen aimed at teens. Seinen at adults.
Moreover. There are shounen with complex af stories and themes. For example one piece. It portrays themes such as slavery, piracy, oppression, politics, sacrifice, loss, war. Etc. And it does it very well in my opinion. Shows like naruto too and fullmetal alchemist. Along with the adventure side and the unrealistic yet epic battles. But they're still great shows and fun to watch. Tho imo some are classified as shounen when they shouldnt be.

***** I see how the buckler is fast and not as heavy, and you made a lot of good points in the video. But if I (Personally) were a soldier, I'd be panicking if I was up against a large guy with a big axe, especially if I had a small metal buckler. I'd feel more comfortable if I had a sturdy kite shield. But yeah, if I was used to a buckler, and I knew how to be effective with it, heck yeah I would totally use it, I mean, look at Dark Souls 3 one shot weapons (I know....you can't stagger and enemy that much but you can at least knock their weapon out of the way, or stop the momentum.) I would be a beast on the battlefield, until I get skewered by a large spear... But yeah, if you are well trained in using the buckler then you would be a beast while using it.

The Game Lane Sure the man has a big ax and has reach but with the buckler its much easier to get within there guard and deny that person swinging space to use that ax effectively. A kite shield can work well to but due to its size its Harder to get inside the guard but on the other hand the kite shield offers more defence... while blocking more of you're eyesight and making you tire faster.... I could go on all night because I have experience and I can tell you allot of the disadvantages and advantages of each shield but I don't think either of us has the time for that!

I watched that anime after your suggestion, and I need to say it is pretty good with clothing choices. Now I can't say anything about weapons and fighting techniques because... i simply don't know about them, but i saw something very VERY frustrating at the last three or two episode; In the gothic style church of what appears to be an english citadel had the ceiling of Sistine Chapel. Firstly, it was supposed to be at Vatican. Secondly, the painter of the thing, Michelangelo Buonarotti wasn't probably born yet, even if he was, he probably was just a baby. So how the hell did Sistine Chapel's ceiling went to that gothic church, no idea. But it was a good anime anyways, just a minor mistake... :)
