  • Tim explores the ups and downs of Sheffield University's infamous Paternoster lift.
The Arts Tower was built in the mid 1960s to accommodate the University's Art department and incorporated a Schindler made 38 car Paternoster lift. It is one of the few surviving examples of a Paternoster left in Europe, and one of even fewer which are still in service.

It's called a paternoster lift because it's a bit like a string of rosary beads going through your hand. Paternoster is the Latin for Our Father as in the Lord's Prayer.

Wonder why it's necessary to shine a bright floodlight in the faces of people who go past the top floor?

It will be so you can see, especially if you get stuck there, otherwise it will be pitch black. A light is not needed on the other floors, as there are no doors on the lift and the ambient light lights up the carriage. Oddly there didn't seem to be a light when going round the bottom (though I had my video light on when recording).
