Ahhhhhh this makes sense now, putting proxies in a separate folder. I imagine this is so helpful with performance when editing on an older MacBook or MBA.
100%! Because you're only working with the super small files while editing, occasionally switching over if you need to verify quality or the color grade if that's being done or something. But you're editing small, exporting out the full quality at the end!
A panasonic camera has added the ability to record proxy simultaneously. However, I did not know how to connect them. This video solved everything. Thank you very much!
Thanks for posting this! Question- around 1:31 you show renaming the files. This will be my first time using FCP. I’m not clear, why do you do that/need to do that? Thanks!
@notoriace You're very welcome! The reason is so that when FCP looks to match the proxy and the original file that it has the same name. It's so that you mimic what the proxy file name would look like if you asked FCP to make the proxy for you in the program vs getting it from your computer. If you don't change it, the process doesn't work. So, that's why I shared that bit.
Thanks a lot for that! I had a problem relinking the proxies. It says: "It cannot be relinked...relinked files must have the same media type similar audio channels"... It does'nt make sense, they are just copied from my sony camera as they are... Do you know how to solve that problem?
You’re very welcome! As far as the issue you ran into, I’m not sure. I haven’t seen that message before. If you take that exact error message and paste it into Google, it may pull up a Reddit or solution on how to overcome that. That’s what I usually do when I run into those offhand errors in FCP and it usually pulls up a few options to troubleshoot and solve it.
this was really good , I think I got it lol as a seasoned fcpx editor I never had to use proxies but not having a silicon laptop as yet I know imma need it lol ... definitely gotta practice this workflow when my zv e1gets here ...
You're very welcome! Glad this was helpful for you! This might be one of those things for you where once you do it in person and have the files in front of you, it'll click. As long as you name your files like I shared in the video, you'll be golden when you do the rest of this stuff step-by-step.
Yeah, it'd be awesome if all editing softwares did this. There may be a way to do it with that software, just search around some Reddit forums if TH-cam doesn't turn anything up. You never know!
@@DianaGladney I have looked. Nothing. Well, one thing, but only for multicam editing, and it doesn't show up for everyone. I have been using this program for years. No proxy files sadly.
I would suggest double checking the settings I mentioned in the video and folder setup and you should be golden. Sometimes it’s something super small that can be off if you’re doing this for the first time.
thanks for this, saved me lots of explaining to my editors
lol That's awesome!

I wish Pinnacle Studio could do proxy files. 🙁
