would have been interesting to hear from players and coaches who were part of Coach Wooden's LOSING teams - since in it seems only players from championship teams have been interviewed about Wooden's coaching method and character - I have a feeling that the same sentiment would be expressed, but when you're losing and facing adversity those sentiments can mean even more

I attennded Wash. State Univ. ...70-72 and was on the broadcast crew for KWSU TV / PBS. We were allowed to take the coaching classes that were usually closed to only P.E. majors and athletes. The black guy in the video about the haircut (he's bald now) but in the picture he talks about his "fro." That's Sydney Wicks. In our WSU coaching class, Coach Marv Harshman told us that with most players, if you get hit, you hit back. He said with Wicks, he hits you, then you hit him back, then he hits you back twice. My one in person experience w/ Bill Walton was before a telecast game at WSU, I was on the court before UCLA entered the gym. They were fist bumping and high fiving, and you could just sense how confident and athletic they were. I was such a little twerp that I felt totally insignificant in their presence.....I felt kind of foolish; here I was a kid sportscaster, and these guy are really the ones who are stars.
Coach didn't talk for so long in this and is so old, I feared he had lost his marbles, so he wasn't going to speak. Then I imagined he'd chime in with something this at 3:10, " You just can't find a can of good stewed tomatoes today like you could in the '6os. I like Pastene tomatoes. Can we get some? And some prune juice would be nice. I need a new diaper..."
#35 from Hamilton HS is my favorite Bruin of all time! I played ball at Dorsey HS, same class year as James Wilkes but I was 10 inches shorter and on the “ B” team.

Lucius Allen had talked about this at different times and its documented. Sam made sure the players were taken care of. JD Morgan ( The AD at UCLA ) even was aware of this) Wooden and The AD just hid their head in the sand and did nothing. thats why Wooden"s titles are Tainted

That was the principal reason Luscious had to leave school early. Sam negotiated at least one player's pro contract for free when he/they graduated and he threw pool parties/brunch for the players sometimes on Sundays. A far cry from the tens of millions of dollars given to FB players now to sign w/ Miami, TAMU, SC et al. JRW was the GOAT basketball coach, period.

He was definitely part of the legacy. It's not all rosy. And don't forget back in those days he could stash players and the tournament was much smaller. I believe at some points it was only 16 teams in the 60s. He was a great coach but there's a lot to this story that is sometimes overlooked.

Wooden changed countless lives and stood up for minorities in a time when it cost something to do. Everyone has issues, we are human. But what good did we do anyway? John Wooden did more good for humanity than 98-99% of the people who've lived. Dr. King did more than 99.99% for humanity. What have you done other than criticize on youtube someone who was great.
Not only was he an incredibly inspiring human being and widely considered the best coach ever, Coach Wooden was also the first college basketball three-time All-American when he played at Purdue in the early 1930s.That's something that I don't think a lot of people know about him.

I’m sure Wooden needed time to develop his methods. But character is something you either have or don’t. And he had that in spades.
