You have to use a very dry brush to pick up the soap. About a minute of loading the brush. Then lather it as far as you can without adding any water. When it's basically becoming a paste then add water in minuscule amounts and it will lather up bloody lovely :-) it's a strange soap. I found you have to work the bubbles out with the soap fairly dry or it goes frothy. Only once it's at the smooth stage can you start to add water and build the lather up. I hated this soap but it's growing on me fast now.
+TransAm4Ever As far as soaps go i think its too much work compared to other soaps at a fraction of the price. dr harris' tripple milled is easy and forgiving. this stuff is good but i cant be bothered with the effort
I have the same soap and it's actually one of my favorites. What you need to do to get it to lather is to soak the soap in a bowl full of really hot water and put your brush in it as well. After the two minutes pass, take out the soap and the brush - get rid of all the excess water from the brush and start swirling the brush on the soap. In no time you will have ton of luxurious lather. One more thing also try persisting a bit longer when lathering triple milled soaps because they tend to be really hard. Also very slowly add 2-3 drops of water while you are lathering in a bowl.
Hi Nick, I've never used this soap before. I almost purchased some TFH soap from a local distributor before friends of mine told me to save my money. As far as soaps go, I still haven't found anything that beats Synergy for ease of load, lather and performance.
I have the Truefitt & Hill Sandalwood soap, and I have tried every possible lathering technique, but have never been able to get a proper lather out of it. After researching it, it sounds like the soap went to garbage after the reformulation. I have since relegated it to the shower. It was a gift, so I'm glad I didn't actually pay money for this soap. I do feel your pain though.
Just watched the video, and yes it can be hard to lather. I have a few pucks that do the same thing. I use a 610 boar so I can dig into it. More important is to do a double bloom back-to- back with the hottest water you can get out of faucet. Let each bloom soak in for a while. I know it is a pain and a lot of prep to just get a lather but it makes the difference between foamy and creamy lather. More you use it the better it gets to. But I agree, if your buying T&H the creams are the choice to make.
I may be many years too late to the party here, but I've found having a damp brush (I use a badger hair) then put a few drops of water on the puck before loading. I then lather up in a mug that has a little bit of water on the bottom (just a mm or so) and I use the circular motion and it tends to get foamy, then I apply it to the face and I get a decent lather.
I watched a video of truefitt and hill barber shop and they just used the soap the clean the face , and cream to shave. In wondering if their soap is not even meant for shaving seeing as how they dont even use it
I had terrible problems with this too. I am in a soft water area (Wales, UK). I bloomed it first and It looked great on the brush and in the bowl but on the face it was thin and dissipated quickly and did not give good cushioning or protection. The scent though was excellent.
Maybe you have follow the instruction that you used with the Mitchell's Wool Fat soap. Did you also pick up the shaving cream which comes in a 6.7oz jar which I found that sells for about $30 in some grooming websites.
I think that this is the first time I've ever seen someone regret a shaving purchase. You can see the moment when he questions why the soap is $25 lol.
Hey Nick I had the Geo F Trumpers Eucris soap and I had the same problem it was awful..no matter what I did nothing worked...I mixed it with VDH Deluxe and it helped it perform.....give it a shot Best Regards, David
Oh dear! I'm surprised. This stuff is a lot more expensive than ToBS. Good thing you put this up. I'd hate to see anyone paying a premium for a product that's so difficult to work with.
This is similar to what I get and use from MWF, it's shaveable, but I guess I have never seen a really good lather then, lol. Glad to see I'm not the only one struggling with lather and it's more about the product, because I was thinking I had super hard water. Which soap produces the best lather with least effort?
Hi Nick, Have you tried soaking the puck yet? I recomend soaking that shave soap puck in hot water (coffee pot strength) for about 3 minutes. If it doesn't lather after that then it may have too much perfume and delimonene in it to build a lather.
What I did was that I used really hot water like boiling water. I did a blooming to the soap for a minute or two and after that I used a really dry boar brush. I loaded the soap for two minutes because the soap is very hard. And after that I made leather to the a bowl. And after that I took the leather and put it in my face. The leather was ok but I mean these days you can find better soaps. But the smell of the soap is amazing.
I just got back from London and ventured into Truefitt and Hill. I picked up mostly creams (I love the rose scented stuff) but I did pick up some soap (I've never used soap before). I watched this video and am wondering if I should have just saved my money or spent it on aftershave instead. Did you ever get this soap to work for you?
Hey Nick. Did you happen to pick up any creams from those British shops? I'm pretty sure they're more well known for shaving creams than for shaving soaps and I'm curious about your opinion of them.
Bloom the puck in hot water for a few minutes wet brush and shake out all water load for 45 sec to a minute apply using painting motion add water a few drops at a time continue to use painting motion when it begins to thicken add a few drops of water at a time to brush as it continues to thicken begin using swirling motion adding a few drops of more water continue to swirl and paint lather will come from nowhere once u build a good lather by adding a few drops of water at a time surprisingly lather can take a good amount of water lather will be thick and really slick I have used with badger boar and synthetic I also have hard water only down side is that it takes a bit of time to lather
The most important thing is that this soap is mery sensitive to the quality of the water. I always use mineral water and you can see a difference. I had the soap for a year and I spent a very big amount of it because I was trying to find the way to make a leather. Something else that I discovered is that the soap has the same scent like the mogno soap from ach brito. I prefer the mogno becauce it is way easier to make a leather. If you find it try it
I hear that one soap company makes the hard soaps for many other companies, truefitt and hill being one of them. I had a hard soap by Geo F. Trumper and I had the same results you did, airy foam, no good lather. Turns out the same soap company, soapworks, makes Geo F Trumpers soap too. I use the soap as hand soap now, everyone loves it but its not a good shave soap. Hopefully you can find a way to make a good lather, I couldn't but that doesn't mean it can't be done.
I used the Grafton shaving cream rather than the soap with a Kent boar hair brush, it lathered very well but I had to use a lot of cream! Shave was really nice too! I'd like to see a cream review nick!
I have medium hard water here on the Ohio river and some soaps work well and some do not. After I changed to using distilled water for lathering, they all work well even the creams work better.
I am two months in to my wet shaving experience and I absolutely love it. I use a cheap $15 badger hair brush and I always see you using a boar. I am about to switch from creams to trying my first soap, do you have any boar brush recommendations?
Glad it wasn't just me who couldn't get a useful lather out of this! I'd previously used the 1805 cream and that was excellent, but the soap was a major disappointment given its premium price.
Where's the follow up video!? I purchase the truefitt & hill green packaging version and it gives the same results and really drys out my skin! i have just started using a de shaver and I've just had the worse shave with this soap! Razor burn everywhere! My face and fingers were squeaking where they were so dry!
@nick shaves: You described that this 1805 scent by T&H as being a "fresh, clean" scent as opposed to a "deeper, masculine" scent. What scents by T&H (as well as Taylor of Old Bond Street & Geo F. Trumper) would you describe as "deeper, masculine" scents?? Thanks & Great Review!!
Saved me $25. Thanks. I had the same problem with Dr Squatch shave soap. Love their body bars but the shave soap make what looked like fire retardant foam rather than a shaving lather. Fortunately I only wasted $10 on that. Might make a decent body bar...well puck.
I have some Truefitt and Hill soap in their ceraminc shaving scuttle.. it needs to be soaked for a minute with some hot water and then it will lather. It is not a luscious foamy lather as what you are used to though.
Dead right as always. I’ve ended up throwing away a T&H cream because I found it totally thin & unsatisfactory. We don’t have hard water in Ireland. Not recommended. Good call. 👍
All of my British soaps are very hard, such as D.R. Harris and Crabtree & Evelyn, but they give great easy to build lathers. Wish this soap had performed better, especially at that price!
The big T's all have this same issue. Taylor, Truefitt, Trumper. Their soaps all produced by the same manufacturer - Soapworks. Avoid their soaps like the plague. Taylor makes the best cream of the three in my experience, very thick and slick. Trumper is a good 2nd, whereas Truefitt's creams are okay but nothing to really write home about. If you want a soap, I can heartily recommend Stirling. Should be easy to find too as many online barbershops have it in stock.
First I would like to thank you for great reviews. However, I have to disagree on this one.1805 is the only T&H soap I have ever owned (or tried). Maybe it is because I have soft water, but I get the most delicious and great foam from this soap. When I start working with the soap, it is airy and useless, but being persistent, in seconds it transform to the most luscious and dense cream that i can imagine. I can literally put the lathering bowl upside down for half 15 minutes without any of the foam falling out. If the blade is decent there is no feedback from the allumn block what so ever. It is as smooth as the Arko on a hot summers day in the Mediterranean. It is however or of the more trickier soaps, but I think cracked it. The price is ok I think. I have had no soap that have lasted that many shaves. Not by far. I guess two of these pucks could last me a year. I find a well used boar brush to be the weapon of choice.
Hi Nick, I have watched most of your reviews and good reviews they are, as regards the T&H Soap have you tried loading your brush for a lot longer, I've noticed that because I have hard water in my area I have to load my brush a lot longer, 1 minute in fact I know this because I use my wrist watch to check, by the time 1 minute comes up the brush is almost sticking to the puck, but I get a really thick lather from this, just a thought I don't like to think you've spent that sort of money on a soap and not getting results - sorry if I'm rambling - Mark From the UK.
As other commenters have said, I think T&H are more famed for their creams than their soaps. A while ago, I saw someone on the wicked_edge subreddit suggest that unless they're known for their soaps, pick a brand's cream - D.R. Harris is a good soap, but TOBS and T&H are more known for creams for example. I have the 1805 cream and even with moderately hard water is lathers well. I'm curious as to why you use a boar brush to simulate your face lather and a badger for your bowl lather, as I would have thought the other way around would have made more sense myself. Keep up the good work Nick, the fact that you consistently put up videos is what makes you one of the best wetshavers on TH-cam (As an aside, Edinbugh is pronounced edin-bruh but it's a mistake lots of Americans make)
When you can use Vitos or Cella soaps - which are better priced as well as strong performers all the way around - this looks like a pretty lame start for T&H's soap. I have heard from some T&H evangelist that the reformulation killed it.... Your looking for tips on what to do - use a different soap!... I know you have heard this before: "Demand a lot from your equipment and you will then get good shaves". IE: If a product flunks, PIF it. Good try on the T&H.... Sad to see that it actually fell flat.
Truefitt & Hill made a decent soap up until 2008, then they reformulated it and all 3 versions of the TF&H soap are now very hard to lather and honestly sucks. Avoid them. I own 8 of their creams and they are very good performers - not in my Top 10 of best creams, but very solid performing creams. DON'T BUY THE TF&H SOAPS !!
not trying to be a jerk or anything, but i'm kind of relieved to see this soap didn't perform for you. i bought three sandalwoods and it's a turd. sucks, huh? =\
I have used the 1805 Cream (in a tub) and it is of the highest quality and scores a 10 on the B+B forums. Im not really sure why it didn't work, but it is great stuff... Try using an English accent while lathering "Governor" (jk)
I don't know what you're doing wrong. I never had any problems with it. Quite the opposite. I get copious amounts of slick lather with any brush. This proves that one should always try things themselves . Don't listen to other people.
That's disappointing man =/ the presentation was so nice. Had half the mind to buy it till I seen its performance. Hopefully once you get it right its a great soap.
I was in love with the sanaldwood until I discovered the 1805! Blew my mind! Happy Wet Shaving check out my wet shaving videos. -- CC instagram.com/wildwomenwetshaving/
Basically it looks like the pick needs to be ashamed in hot water for a while and a big super soft brush. Maybe the Duke likes making things difficult. :-)

I've got the 1805 shaving cream. Wonderful stuff.
Seems like the Geo F. Trumper and Truefitt & Hill soaps aren't that great.
Yeah that was my experience too; good creams but avoid their soaps
I watched a video of truefitt and hill barber shop and they just used the soap the clean the face , and cream to shave. In wondering if their soap is not even meant for shaving seeing as how they dont even use it

I have tried this and got the same disappointing result. I like their 1805 after shave, but thats all i use from them.
Reminds me of Geo F Trumper Eucris, a great smelling soap but it lathers like a bath soap i.e. foamy disapating lather that is not fit for shaving.
I have some Truefitt and Hill soap in their ceraminc shaving scuttle.. it needs to be soaked for a minute with some hot water and then it will lather. It is not a luscious foamy lather as what you are used to though.

Nick, soak the puck in very hot tap water while showering then try with your silvertip again. That's the best way apparently.
pretty thorough, thanks.....
Not sure about the soap, but their creams contain parabens. No excuses in this day and age.
