    Lion mountain created for AKQA's 'Future Lions' project, in Cannes, France, 2016. Carved from polystyrene / styrofoam, with a blanket coat of glass fibre, a render of a flexible concrete, and artworked with emulsion paints to look like stone / rock. Broken down into several sections for transportation.

    Incredible, as always! Is there any case in which you wouldn't use a fiberglass layer over top of the styrofoam for a short-duration outdoor piece? I'm planning a work that would need to be outside for 10 weeks in the fall/early winter & would only have a month to build, so I'm hoping to save some time but not sure that it would hold up without that protective coating. Also, at what size do you begin to add metal reinforcements?

      Hey Zy, We've created items where we've only used the concrete render. Which forms a sort of barrier to a degree. Not sure how it would hold up waterproof wise for 10 weeks though. We've also used a plastic coating mix quite recently, that can go straight onto polystyrene, which forms a really good barrier for short term items. Over the next month or so, look out for a video about giant toy soldiers, and we'll be using this :) Thanks for watching and the kind comments

      Aden Hynes Sculpture Studios thanks so much for such a quick response! I’ll look into plastic coatings & will watch out for that upcoming video! The piece will also have to float so I think the concrete render is a no go for me. All the best!

      The plastic mix might be the best option then. Waterproof as well as lightweight

    How much do these projects usually set the clients back? I'd guess £15,000-20,000 at the least?

    You always mention that you have to put on the aluminum foil layer so that the resin doesn't eat into the foam. Why don't you use epoxy resin, which doesn't eat the foam and would eliminate the need for the labor-intensive aluminum foil layer?

    • @AdenHynesSculptureStudios
      @AdenHynesSculptureStudios  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. It's because Epoxy resin works out to be twice as expensive. The foil and the process of putting it on works out to be much more cost effective for both us and our clients.
