The stuff from the 70's, while clearly showing that distinctive anime style, also tended to look a bit flat and dull. Light and shading were very minimal. Movements and action sequences lacked the exaggerated, dramatic flare of later anime and tended to be much more rigid and clumsy. It was animator, Yoshinori Kanada that pioneered the hyper stylized character movements and action sequences that anime is now known for. Of course, the stuff by animation legend, Hayao Miyazaki, such a Castle of Cagliostro, were exceptions. His stuff was way ahead of its time and highly cinematic.
