Instead of Harmony Gold combining two different shows, they could have just combined both Harlock shows and edited together a clipshow to fill in that missing episode, I dunno, they could've edited to make it look like Harlock was visiting someone to tell them about his past adventures or something.
Couldn’t do it. That was the original plan and it was solicited as such at NATPE (proof via a flyer printed by HG) but it turned out HG didn’t have the rights for SSX. Which makes no sense as it seems pretty solid that HG was the source for SSX for the Albator 84 release. Otoh it’s possible that for some reason HG failed to secure rights for the US. There’s no question that blending Space Pirate and SSX would be a huge problem to solve.

Failed pilots on VHS may just be a little more common then you'd think, don't forget, that's why the pilots for Battle Toads and Pyde Of The X-Men are so easily available.
Failed pilots often see the light of day. It's content that has already been produced so oftentimes the studio can recoup some money by licensing or releasing it. The original Star Trek pilot is probably the most famous example. Mockingbird Lane might be the most recent prominent example but there are a lot more. ABC aired a series of them as TV movies in the 80s. Or they're released as special features like Aquaman. Cartoons have been released that way many times as well

In the 80s I had to get up at 5 am (in my early 20s, hangover or not!) to watch Capt Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years on my 4-inch portable TV. Love the voice actor Michael McConnohie, he was the BEST Harlock voice.
So I wanted to express my appreciation for this video. I’ve argued for decades that the first Ziv Harlock dub was a perfectly fine job. Further, I believe if the entire series had been dubbed in this manner it would be one of the key anime dubs for a generation. But it was not to be. The same might be said of the Captain Future dub. It suffered the same fate as Harlock, a decent quality dub on the first tape, trash on the second. As to those second, junk dub tapes the answer is obvious. FHE got good sales from the rental stores who wanted more. Not knowing who did the work they just contracted with some foreign film dubbing company and gave little oversight to the project. They didn’t have the Japanese music & effects track so just lay down what they could make. It’s not too different from what happened with the third series of Star Blazers. It’s frustrating that there is basically nothing known about this dub, let alone just how did Ziv stumble over this and decided to try and put it out to the American TV market. I have some ideas about what was going on but no way to prove anything. It ties to the mystery of just how did Toei anime explode all over Europe around 1978. And I may be out of my mind on this theory. 😁 I LOVE that first Ziv tape. If it hadn’t been a ‘rental priced’ tape at a time when I was struggling I would have gladly bought it. So wait, you say William Winkler did a ‘movie’ cut of Harlock at the same time he was doing some of the ex-Force Five shows? I don’t ever recall hearing of that! It slipped completely past my radar. Thanks for the knowledge!
I saw the Ziv version as a kid on VHS back in the day and I really loved it. I watched it again and the 2 good episodes still had hold up. The voice acting was great and I love it. Harlock sounded exactly how I would expect.I really wish they had done the whole series. I love the concept and styling of the series in general very unique, dark and captivating. More of an adult cartoon so mature and superior to todays crap.
I have a dub of arcadia of my youth called vengeance of the space pirate you forgot that and at least malibu didnt forget him just leji had a hissy fit and its all lost to time I think they could have made an agreement ben dunn didnt do a bad job
7:06 ok, first I love Maya. She was cute, represented the future, and in my headcannon she joins Harlock after she turns into an adult. But, they killed her off? REALLY?! That's just wrong on so many levels. Let's ignore how this basically kills the plot, and point out this kills all meaning in the story.

my local video rental had some captain harlock. I remember loving it as a kid. I wish I could find a copy of it today.
The FHE VHS's of the two ZIV International dubs have been uploaded to the Internet Archive.

Can you believe Space Pirate Captain Harlock 78 had a complete, imperfect but still good dub in french in the late 70's, early 80's.

There is always the dubbed not bad...I heard of this while being in the USA, living in Hawaii and Japanese having it on vhs!

why does Harlock look so much like Manabu Yuuki?
Doesn’t he look more like Yuuki’s dad? Also think that’s just because it’s the same art style and character
well, Harlock looks more like Manabu and Wataru did a fusion spell

Great show, I saw it in French in the 80s. So the music never sounds "right" in English.
