ABOUT THIS PROJECT ►
Christmas 2021 is almost here!! 🎅 We make lots of DIY props for our yard for Christmas and Halloween and our newest project is turning our best DIY Halloween Prop, our "Dark Portal" into an EPIC Christmas Decoration! The portal is built from foam to look like real stone and we decorated it to look like a portal to the north pole that Santa Clause would use! This Christmas Prop had our whole neighborhood stopping in their tracks to see and was incredibly fun to decorate and build.
This video covers a lot of the detail that didn't make it into our original Halloween Dark Portal video. Video editing, projectors, the projection material, how to position your projector, decorations, all kinds of stuff!

How does the Dark Portal work?
It's built entirely from XPS foam and paint, with LEDs on the inside to make the runes glow. We used a semi-transparent material on the back and then did a rear projection of a hellish VFX scene, etc. to create the interior of the portal. During the day, the fabric is taken down and then at night we project the hellscape.
Who are we?
We're Jaimie and Jay! We're a husband and wife team and we make stuff together. Halloween, Christmas, and other awesome props, woodworking, electronics, and whatever we want.

While it's winter, one thing about putting a projector into a housing like that is to check the temperature! Projectors can get crazy hot inside and if they don't have enough air flow, the bulb will burn out in the best case scenario.

You could always keep the spooky season in tact partially by displaying a Krampus in front of the portal as if he were emerging from it. Just an idea!

Great work and awesome tutorial! One thing to note about vertically mounting a projector. There is a possibility that the projector could be designed to have its power cord or hdmi cord outputs on those edges (like mine does). To fix this, make a stand exactly like in your video but make the floor portion false. Then drill through the false floor, route the wires down through the holes and out to your power supply or media player. This makes it so you can turn the projector vertically and not crush your side mounted wires...cheers 🎅🤙

I love this portal so much!!! I would really love to have one but I am partially handicapped due to a very bad back and knee's, my husband has bad knees and we're not too tech savvy either!
😲Whaaat a brilliant idea.... I like where this is going! I remember when the Christmas trees invaded HD before Oct 9 and the Halloween stuff got shoved into a small corner of the store. I kid not! I have pictures and posted them on my FB page and my that was the most comments I ever received on any subject! So... You guys have literally opened a "portal" for us Halloween folks to push back on that and say... "We hadn't forgot what you did there, so look what we're doing here! Bwahahaha.... Of this DIY Christmas decoration becomes a thing, I would suggest making a sister channel so as not to mix the Halloween and Christmas content and maybe call it "Jolly Makers" or something like that

11:07 WE DID THIS EXACT THING!! as one of our additions this year we added garland roofline. we had this exact idea of the wire, but would i recommend it? it looks like it he,d good for them, but for us we had a little bit of wind and lots of the garland fell down. i would recommend it for their kind of project, but not really for gutters.

I want to do a xmas prject as well but I was wondering if you have tried this.
I want to use the projector to show the atmos snowman stuff. But I want to make my own snowglobe. I was thinking of doing a big waterwalking ball and hang some mesh inside it and build a base to make it look like a snowglobe. But will the water walking ball be to reflective and is this possible you can try doing this to see how well it comes out?

how does that portal work in wind? does it hold up ok?
Depends on severity of wind and if you take the protection material down. The material acts like a sail so really intensifies the wind. Projector Down my version with 6ft rebar stakes stood up to 20mph winds in OH. When the wind got over that I took it down. Afraid of losing the top section.

I use a Chromecast plugged into my projector and i can then run video from anywhere to the Chromecast, from my phone, PC or tablet!

We don’t project if it’s going to rain. We Just take it inside.

My problem with projections is the huge version that displays on houses, trees, etc. on the other side of the street. I know most don't notice it, but I see it and it bothers me. Perhaps, one day, I can get a short throw to solve the problem.
Yep for sure. The portal blocks it mostly but it’s something to watch for definitely. Especially if you have neighbors across the street.
