    I adopted a basenji (Lizzy Belle) 17 yrs ago. My first dog as an adult, and she was the best! Incredibly smart, empathetic, loving and a skilled escape artist. I lost her 4 times! Luckily I found her quickly (always at the closest dumpster lol) but once a kind lady took her to the local pound. Thankfully I found her there. Lizzy passed away at 14 yrs old after a courageous year long battle with cancer. I have her ashes on my side table so she is always close to me. I miss her daily.

      @Watermelon Ice I am truly sorrowful for your loss. I just adore beagles. During my youth, my family had 3 beagles. My mother doesn't think dogs should live indoors. We lived in very rural middle Georgia. Apparently, hunters either steal beagles or kill them while they are hunting (thievery being the most prominent), which was how we lost 2 beagles. The 3rd female, pregnant (this was in the late 80s when nuetering dogs was rare, especially in the countryside) beagle was in labour, when something went awry. She had to be taken to the vet for a cesarean birth, then a hysterectomy. All of the pups had to be bottle fed. I was (16yo) visiting for the summer so I bottlefed. I grew attached to one (Booger) & took him back to my father's home (9 hours away, which I drove, feeding this tiny beagle pup in a laundry basket next to me). My father instantly connected with Booger (my father never showed love or any affection towards humans, but dogs..he was full of emotion). Booger went everywhere with my father for about a year. Without going into it, Greg Norman (yes the golfer) visited look at some land my father leased for hunting. When Greg Norman was leaving, he accidentally ran over Booger killing him instantly. Witnesses said my nonviolent dad looked like he was going to kill him. Needless to say, Greg Norman did not get the lease. I would like a beagle. But that time was so detrimental to me and my father, I still have strong emotions about it & I'm 41yo. Sorry for the long reply. It feels good to talk about Booger, even when it brings me to tears.
      I cannot imagine not having my Lizzy not being next to me always. There was an option to bury her in a pet cemetery, but we move often & I just could not leave her

    You forgot to mention that Basenji are Escape artists! No one should have a Basenji if they do not have a 6-foot privacy fence or are willing to take them outside in a harness every single time they go out. Basenjis love to run and actually do need a good bit of exercise
    We adopted a 10 month old Basenji mix named Emma. She was absolutely awesome. She was a little stubborn at learning but a very affectionate and good dog. Unfortunately we live very close to two very busy streets and could not afford a privacy fence. We tried Emma in several different types of harness and she would still Escape. If I'd tightened the harness anymore it would have hurt her and I didn't want to do that. Even though it broke my heart to do so we had to rehome Emma for her own safety. I was terrified that she was going to get hit by a car and I did not want that.

    • @tuttyfat
      @tuttyfat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I feel you. My basenji escaped 4 times in the 10 yrs I had her. They always have to be watched and on leash when walking. Mine could get out of her harness with 2 flips of her head, then take off running. I had to order a special harness! Give them 1 min in a fenced yard alone, they WILL figure out how to escape!
      I'm so sorry you had to rehome her. My Lizzy passed away at 14yrs old, i miss her every second

    • @laurathunder4388
      @laurathunder4388 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah for some reason basenjis are very easy to get attached to. :-) Emma would get out of any harness we put her in and then she'd be off running. I have disabilities and had a difficult time chasing her down. Thank God that I have great neighbors who would chase her for me. I hated hated hated hated to re-home her butt I knew that it was for her own good. Every time she got out of her harness I was terrified that I would hear screeching brakes. I miss her all the time.

    I am a basenji owner, and my best friend owns a shiba. They have very different personality types. While the Basenji can be goofy and fun, they’re generally much more serious personality wise compared to the shiba. The basenji is also a bit more independent and cat like, mine even knocks things off my coffee table with her nose like a cat with its paws. Basenjis are still a bit more like the dogs hundreds and thousands of years ago and don’t have as much time being a dog breed bred for roles in our way of life. They technically come from the rainforests of the Congo and have been bred by Pygmy’s for thousands of years for hunting, not a family household pet. This makes them to have a bit more of a “wild” personality that is a little more disconnected from humans than other breeds, the Shiba however doesn’t quite have the same issue. Mine is my shadow and quite attached to me, but I have to explain to people unfamiliar with the breed that they are typically not like that on average and typically prefer to chill alone. They do not bark but they can chirp like one of you have another dog that barks, mine taught herself how to. They’re also not exactly quiet, they’re actually pretty damn noisy and LOUD. People hear “barkless” and think they won’t have to deal with noise… you’re going to be disappointed. My dog can do tricks and stuff, but she is much more intelligent than just that. She can figure out puzzles, and some insanely creative ways of getting to things she wants. If she decides she doesn’t like me going to work, she will destroy my shoes or coats because she knows I need them to go to work. She can jump and catch birds out of the air if they are low enough or just taking off and she can run down rabbits. There is also a persistent and annoying myth that Basenji was a breed they used to hunt lions. They did not, there are no lions in the rainforests of the Congo for one and second they’re not built for that. These guys are sight hounds meant to run down small game similar to a greyhound and they are incredibly fast too. Their skinny and small stature is misleading, they’re shockingly strong for their small size, stronger than the Shiba Inu’s I have encountered. They are a wonderful breed, but a Basenji is not for everyone and should be very carefully considered before purchasing. Also note that the basenji community is often very selective about selling dogs, they very much want to make sure there is no funny business with this dog breed and that includes ensuring there is no inbreeding or selective breeding for desired traits. They very much want the breed to stay intact as it has been for thousands and thousands of years.

    Shiba Inu is an ancient breed, and the archeologists have found remains of Shiba way back in 7000 B.C.
    So, Shiba Inu has been melting our hearts with its cuteness for almost 10,000 years!❤️

    I love Shibas ... We currently have 5 (1 adult male, 1 adult female and three adorable pups that were born on 5-30-23.) We're currently trying to sell 2 of the pups, but I learned the hard way that it's almost impossible to sell them if you don't have the same kind of connections as a breeder does. I tried the whole C.L. thing and that seems to be a complete and utter joke at this point. The frustrating thing is that I'm practically giving them away at 500 a piece and the local Shiba breeder on the other side of the river is selling theirs for 2200 + and they have people on a waiting list.

    • @JWildberry
      @JWildberry 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basenjis only come into heat once a year (usually). Unlike most dogs, this doesn't happen at anytime throughout the year either! In the northern hemisphere, they all come into heat around September-October, so most basenji puppies will be born in December. So the fact that you haven't found any for month does not mean there are none in the UK! It just means the large majority will all be born at the end of the year.

We took a detour into vizsla land (I have allergies and we need a very low shedding dog) and we love our v, but in the end we came back to the basenji side. 😀 Basenjis are like a very doglike cat. They are the perfect companion for people who want to laugh. Just remember positive training is your friend and keep the training session consistent, but short. Otherwise, your basenji will pick up the behavior quickly and then get bored.
