    Fantastic discussion. Felt as if I stopped into a bookstore back in the day of green doors and everyone was friendly. ;-) The older books fascinate me on so many levels, particularly the countless hours of human interaction and presence during its use. The fragrance, notations, fingerprints, pollen spores and scuff marks. Each alive and unique to its experience, eager to fulfill its intended purpose. Side note: pollen spores are unique to every location in the world, grab a microscope to see all the locations your books may have been throughout their travels.

    So cool to think these historical books are not all locked away in museums and libraries and are available to 'ordinary' people to own. Sadly I cannot even justify a £200 book just for my pleasure in owning it. But I can make and write my own illuminated book and in 600 years time, if it survives, will be worth a fortune, shame I won't be there to enjoy its antiquity. Great interview Dr Sledge, thanks.

    • @Altobrun
      @Altobrun ปีที่แล้ว +4

      While I have nothing against private collectors, I'd argue it's also good that copies exist in museums and libraries and not all are locked away in private collections unavailable to those of us who cannot spend thousands of dollars to own a copy.

    Super Fascinating. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks to both of you for the talk. My interest in old books of any sort probably started when I was a kid and would go to used book stores in St. Augustine Fl with my mom. This one shop had a few shelves of old books from the 17th and 18th century I think. I loved those shops. So much knowledge and so many stories sitting on shelves waiting to be rediscovered. The only book I have of any real age (quite young compared to what you two are talking about) or monetary value is a first edition William Faulkner novel (missing the dust jacket unfortunately) that I bought at an estate sale for one dollar. I think it's worth about 200 to the right buyer. Due to my financial situation I'll probably never have anything particularly old or rare. But I always do keep an eye out all the same when I go to estate sales and the like.

    Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful episode! Many thanks for this. I had the pleasure and honour of knowing and becoming biographer to the painter Robert Lenkiewicz... who had the best private library for esoterica, the occult, and witch-hunting in the British Isles, possibly in Europe. Even if you've tried to extinguish every superstition in your body there is something utterly magical about holding a MS which may once have been in the hands of Dee or Fludd or Kuhnrath.... Sadly, Robert's library was broken up and sold off after his death but you can get and impression of its scope if you Google ''Lenkiewicz Library Images''.

    what a fascinating career to have. i greatly appreciate both of you taking the time to do this interview. i hope one day to purchase an ancient book. at one time i had an 1854 Dante's Inferno, good condition, that i managed to find at an estate sale for only $50. it was quite large and thick, lavishly illustrated with the tracing paper protection pages. it was my prized possession, but that was long ago and has since been lost to time; i have no idea where that book is today.

    I too have a strange passion for antique books, I find it fascinating that the pages and cover of a book from the 1500’s can look WELL newer than say one from 1818… or even 1930 for that matter.
    (It’s the acid, or lack there of)
    I’ve only seen 3 books pre-1700 in my life, all had very white pages, and more curiously white…ish binding
    ,but no matter the age, as long as it’s a true antique and leather my favorite thing is the way they smell.
    🤣😁

    I really appreciate this video. I will say, though, I would appreciate hearing some discussion on the ethics of collecting antiquarian books. I know that among archaeologists, there's a great aversion to the private collection of artifacts, especially if they are separated from the culture they originate from. I myself collect some old books (nothing in my collection predates the mid 19th century), but I am hesitant to delve much further back for fear of privately owning something of historic significance and/or an artifact that may have been originally looted or otherwise unethically acquired. I would be curious to hear your thoughts on this.

    Then, I'd hand select students and pay them well to read and translate the books; I'd get at least ten heads for ten translations of one book....
    Oh yeah, and I'd preserve the books really well. Guess I should start a GoFundMe page hahahaha....

    Quick question for you guys. There was something I heard about years ago, but never knew if there was any truth to it or not, or maybe something it was maybe based on. It was supposedly a necklace that was put on a witch before burning them known as the eye of the witch? In the 80s a heavy metal band I listened too were super into the French inquisition and demons. He actually was sued bye kiss for using face paint and stuff. But yeah is there anything that you may have heard of like that?
