Holbeck Hall Hotel, Scarborough, collapses on live TV

  • Sunday June 6, 1993: A wing of the Holbeck Hall Hotel on Britain's east coast collapses into the sea as the cliff wall beneath it gives way. It happens at the exact moment Yorkshire TV's Calendar programme goes on the air, with the presenter, the great Richard Whiteley, positioned in front of the building. The first part of the clip, recorded from the studio feed before it went on air and with director Dave Behrens heard on gallery talkback, is from a documentary screened shortly after Richard's death.

30 years on and a hotel that no longer exists because it collapsed into the sea is still better than The Grand Hotel in Scarborough!

I lived for years in Scarborough at what used to be the Army Barracks, it was a beautiful place to live. I know those who owned and worked in that hotel would've been devastated.

I remember delivering to that hotel many years ago. Also met that presenter richard whitley once. I had to voice my opinion of his driving skills (or lack of) after he almost ran me over because he wasn't looking where he was going. Looking to his right at some young women whilst turning left where I was crossing the road. Pillock

@@stevecampbell7589 I was already crossing the road before he turned onto it, he was at fault. As stated in the Highway code, pedestrians already crossing the road have right of way. He was looking to his right, and not left where he was stearing to enter the road. The road I was crossing (Kirkstall Road, opposite the YTV studios) is quite wide and he was stearing from a side road.

But people do see it. They see it and know it is happening every day. They have known for decades about the crumbling dissapearing shoreline. But the problems are more than just superficial. Suggest some sea defensers and you could have ten thousand crazed enviromentalists on you case. Try and change what is classed as an area of out standing natural beauty and you need a stronger case than a mere Hotel falling in to the sea (Possibly). Then there is the problem or reality of who owns the shoreline or that specific piece of shore line and whose responsibility it is. Further along the coast there is the dispute over a section where all the private owners at risk want help from the local council but the local coundil designated them all as private owers (Landlords) and therefore the responsibility is upon the private owners. So the erosian continues. You could check out what is now the English/French Channel. It used to me all land. Now it is a gapping channel 20 to 50 miles across with strong sea currants eroding more and more. Part of the bigger picture is English Heritage who have responsibility for large sections of the English shoreline. Problem is they are marketing those areas as areas of outstanding natural beauty. But nether-the-less English Heritage are seen as those responsible for those coast lines. Teeth as clean white as the White Cliffs of Dover may be areas of out standing natural beauty. But then you have the dark crubling cavity ridden stumps and roots in the mouths of some whores, drug users or owners of neglect which happen to also be reguarded as if also areas of out standing natural beauty or deserving of the same or similar treatment. Those teeth are certainly not reguarded as the responsibility of Dentists who earn their living as managers of teeth as they are only responsible up to how much they are paid. Otherwise they need the service of The national Health which pulls teeth out or does cheap temporary services and was using poisinous mercury amalgam fillings. My unwitting father trusted dentists and took me there in my youth pre teens often when ever any pain occured or anything. As a result I am very sorry that most of my teeth were drilled out before I was ten years of age. As if dentists in the sixties had only drills and mercury fillings. My poor teeth seemed to have no chance. So as an example those managers of areas of out standing Natural beauty are or were as devastating a problem as the natural forces which caused the minior erosion in the first place. So there is a need to manage your own but then others want others to manage their lives for them. So the erosion continues. It's the management who need to be told and they will tell the owners it is their responsibility in many cases. A circle. Happens every day. Oh yes people see it every day.
