What’s his part? It’s well in the past, although not to belittle it; Simon had nothing to do with it. His part is providing an entraining spin on short glimpses of history for a living. Nothing past that. It’s a good story, he owes nothing.
This video as is typical with many of Simon's videos about controversial subjects just misses out inconvenient parts like the following: - The Rohingya Muslims fought a war with the Burmese government from the 1940's to the 1980's with the aim of ethnically cleansing Rakhine Province of Burmese Buddhists and taking the land for themselves then having the Bangladeshi Army annex it so i was no longer part of Myanmar. - The Rohingya failed in their aim so a ceasefire was put in place between them and the Burmese government in the 80's. - The Rohingya Muslims broke this ceasefire in the early 2000's when they started going into Buddhist villages in Rakhine Province and massacring people. - Rohingya Muslims also began marrying their men to the local Buddhist women. While doing this they would also murder couples where Buddhist men had married Rohingya Muslim women. I'm not saying any of this justifies the Myanmar Governments behavior as it doesn't. This situation is two groups trying to ethnically cleanse each other so they could control a piece of land, then the Western media acting like the losing side is innocent and did nothing wrong (because of their religion and a UN beef with Myanmar over 2004 aid money stolen by Myanmar Government and Military top brass after that typhoon in 2004). The moral of this story is never trust the Western media, UN (or Simon's videos anymore because he always pushes the establishment narrative whether it is true or not).
@@CornPopsDood an entertaining spin that on purpose missed out an almost 4 decade conflict between the Rohingya and the Myanmar Government followed by a 20 year ceasefire because it proves this was a war not an innocent party being oppressed for no reason. This makes this video nothing more than propaganda.
I’m grateful that you made a video for this. The media and online users on social media like Twitter have fallen to selective outrage which I find disgusting but bringing more awareness to other atrocities being committed helps relieve that problem in our discourse today.
Thank you Simon for doing your part to remind the West that there are still genocides happening in places not named Ukraine or Palestine. Could you please do one about the Uighur people of China? The Chinese Government is waging deliberate genocide against them and has been actively trying to suppress any news about the genocide.

This accusation is linked to the conceptualization of Israel as a settler colonial state.[1][2] Those who believe Israel's actions constitute genocide typically point to the phenomena of anti-Palestinianism, Islamophobia, anti-Arab racism in Israeli society, and they cite the Nakba, the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the blockade of the Gaza Strip, the 2014 Gaza War and the 2023 Israel-Hamas war as material instantiations of genocide.[3][4] International law and genocide scholars have accused Israeli officials of using dehumanizing language.[5] During the 2023 Israel-Hamas war, historian of genocide Omer Bartov warned that statements made by top Israeli officials "could easily be construed as indicating a genocidal intent."[6] " from Wikipedia. This is just a smaller part of the massive war on minorities in myanmar. As a burmese citizen, there are news about a remotr village being burned everyday. I just want to inform that this is not just a rohinga issue, it is a whole issue about the junta's grip on power
By western media, it is only rohingya issue and Burmese buddhist are evil and are all same, me,you are Min Aung Hlaing are same, Now these uncivilized people are killing each other. We seriously need our own burmese media to educate about our country to the world.
With my limited knowledge on Myanmar I'm incline to agree with you but the thing about the Rohingya issue is how it appears to be endorsed by the citizens. I do hope this is government propaganda and the civilians doing the rioting are a relative few but it seems like this is the one abuse everyone accepts over there.
@SEAZNDragon Well, any stuff about the rohingya rarely get talked about here, it is more like everyone forgot about it and cared more on the current civil war.
@SEAZNDragon The government also use their propoganda devices, and since most of myanmar's population have limited education, they are using it to explain the injustice carried out by them
People also feel indifferent to the genocide like the feeling of "oh another bad thing else where". In Myanmar, people started to just think about how to live for tomorrow and stop, not caring but like start being indifferent, about the atrocities, not only for rohingya but also for other ethnicities

I remember this being a thing people were upset about in 2016. Everyone was upset about it for a week, and then everyone moved on to the next thing. It's when I started realizing how difficult it is getting people to care about something for longer than a day. Most people do care, but can't care for very long because they, themselves, are struggling and to preoccupied with keeping their own heads above water. Fair enough. It's the people that make a show of caring that are rotten. They make it their whole personality, change their profile picture to a flag or symbol, and interrupt every conversation in the comments with their new cause. They use suffering and death to make themselves look good, but what's truly awful is that these are the people who will make sure no one forgets about the causes. Unfortunately, they're also the same people that make the everyday person tune out because they're so in-your-face.
Yes it their fault. Not our society that can measure attention spans by the microseconds(and made to be that way) or the politicians/corporations that support any evil to line their own pockets. It is wrong to say that Malaysia and Indonesia and Thailand are not willing to help. We did. In 2017, we took many of them in. The results? Crime rates increase, they open business selling local products which competes with local, in the apartment which I'm living in, a Rohingya man boosted of his business success (driving a luxurious car) before being detained for not paying taxes, you can often see red bearded Rohingya man with underage girls (holding hands) that is DEFINTIELY not their daughter or grand daughter, videos of Rohingya complaining that food provided is not enough, throwing rubbish into the rivers, using public spaces as toilet, etc. There are also protest or demand by this group to demand land or certain states or areas to be given to them, request for more rights the same as locals, etc. So you tell me - besides driving them away, what are we supposed to do? In Malaysia, due to our location as the Guardian of Strait of Melaka, and generally wealthier country, there are many refugess in this country, stretch from as far as I personally know from Iraq or Palestine. They assimilate and we welcome them. They do not compete with locals - selling Arab food or goods, pay their taxes, and we generally leave them alone. After Myanmar Civil War started, I personally know of at least TEN Myamnar Buddhist - living peacefully in Malaysia (without valid papers). They work in Food and Breverages, long hours up to 12 hours a day, get paid like any other regular migrants, but no locals attack them or go against them. We leave them alone, cos like us, they are here to make a living, and they do not demand for same rights as local. They know they are here to work, and leave in due time, whether back to Myanmar or marry a local, etc. But when you start making problems to the locals, and create bad and unhealthy culture (mostly underage 13-15 years old marriage), then we have problems.
Agreed, Thai here. It's easy to say that we are heartless for rejecting them, but WE DID, and like you have said, the crime rate in the area was rampant, and reduced to normal when we deported those ungrateful immigrants. The leftist westerners will say whatever they want, but do not take any of those immigrants.
Totally agree from Indonesia. Western media that cover this issue, recently, only victimized rohingnya w.o explain the reason why now we refuse to take them in,while at the beginning we are very welcomed to help them. They make it very biased w.o cover the whole issue. The only solution is those strong & rich western countries need to take them in asap, but I doubt they will do it although they are the one who responsible to take refugee,as they are in difficult situation now financially & I dont think they would like to take rohingnyas in once they figure out rohingnyas behaviour
Sylvester Stallone made this the backdrop in Rambo 4 back in 2008. Back when Myanmar was call d Burma. And from from what I understand a lot of the atrocities the villains committed in the film are *not* exaggerated or altered for dramatic effect. The main villain was even played by a former rebel that fled to Thailand who wanted to raise awareness about what was happening there. This was 5 years, in 5 days 6 years, ago. And look at the nation now. *Nothing* has changed.
The backdrop was in Kayin. (Karen) state, on the other side of the country bordering Thailand. But yes what's been shown on screen is very much toned down from reality which is much worse.
We have Karen people in Australia, and they were telling me how the Burmese would end peoples lives like it was a gambling game or some sort. I've lived in Thailand for 8 years and the suffering on the news from legal and illegal Burmese are things you would never imagine. Like an adult male ending someone's life over lose change to kill their Thai boss for money when the bosses are old and nice to them. Truly heartless.
That's why when I tell people I'm Buddhist and they react with "That's awesome! Buddhists are so peaceful compared to these other religions" I let them know about this, not enough people know. It's horrible.
It's not a poor example of Buddhism, but rather example of the power of right wing ideology. They ALWAYS use some religion or another as a multifaceted tool: shield, sword, and smokescreen. Even a religion as peaceful sounding on paper as Buddhism. This is how Indian Hindus and western evangelicals have become buddies. It's how billions of Muslims adored jordan peterson right up till the day he revealed his support for zionism. The right wing always see eye to eye on one thing - maintaining their preferred status quo no matter the cost.

Sorry to hear that you and your close ones also suffer from the acts of Myanmar. It's easy to forget that responsible ones aren't the refugees - it's the people who they are fleeing and to some extent the government of the nation they fled to. This is one of the effects that is rarely discussed considering civil wars or other horrible events. Neighboring countries always take the biggest group of refugees, as people leaving don't have the means to go further, want to be in familiar cultural setting, they can't speak foreign languages so they stick together with others in the same position. Those people need to be spread over large area, and schooled to the local language, customs and such. It's brutal that the way to make refugees feel at home and make them productive to society is to break their only societal tie to whom they are and locate them not in one place, but in small groups over large areas. That way they are accepted as they aren't a threat to locals and they have better chance at making friends an getting work, at integrating. Integration is NOT the same as forgetting ones roots or customs.

Unfortunately there is a minimum level of sympathy needed to compensate for otherwise wasteful wars. Every culture has this threshold. there is one important fact that this documentary FAILED TO MENTION: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and a few other neighboring countries (especially the islamic ones) actually started out as very helpful in welcoming the Rohingya refugees in the beginning, even created all sorts of programs to help them settle down and such. but over years, all these countries slowly changed from being very supportive to outright hating these refugees, they are not adorable at all, they dont appreciate the help, cause civil disorder, and keep giving the local citizens of the host counties all the reasons in the world to despise them. yea, pushing them out back into the sea on their small boats are inhumane, but do know that it didnt started out that way, at least in the beginning

as somone living in the region, i can tell you that these things are complicated and all the countries in SEA have a strong underlying problem that can be described vaguely as 'selfishness'. Its crazy that even the most peace loving religion (that I know of) is capable of such a radical movement. It proves to me that no religion is inherently good or evil, but instead it is the "people" that use religion for their own agenda that are inherently evil. I really hope the actual Buddhists denounce this and try to show the radicals what their religion is actually about.
Lol the mongol empire was a majority Buddhist and they did some intense evil things The only real religion that I could say is "peaceful" are the Jains infact they created the swatstika which ironically became a strong symbol against peace (at least in the West)
A religion is a belief system that literally "links poeple" together. It is meant to provide a moral/ethic code and try to explain how we are what we are. If you step back most have the same basic principles, but we let the particularities forever separate us. Most religions preach treating others with some grace/respect you would give yourself/those close to you, but humans pick and choose what aspects they want to follow. What is more important are the core principles that are often twisted and unrecognizable. For example, I'm telling you the VAST majority of Christian churches, including the cult of Catholicism, having nothing to do with what is marked does as what Jesus said. For example, Jesus ssid it is basically impossible for a rich man to go into heaven. And yet, we worship $ and those who have it. Look at these televangelists. People are sheep and there are wolves

I’m Rakhine Ethnic Minority from Burma. I’m grateful to see us getting genuine attention from you. Some of the things are a bit off. 1. Rakhine State always been Buddhist state even way before Islam reach south east Asia (look up Mauke Oo, capital of ancient Rakhine) We always had freedom of religion and some of locals Rohingya were converted to Islam not when foreigners were introduced to region. Needless to say Rohingya are always been minorities within minority Rakhine. I’m not proud of what Burmese & Some Rakhine have done on the Rohingya people but claiming the whole entire state as there own Muslim state is equivalent of getting a ticket and claiming you own the whole bus. 2. I’m not surprised but the events in the history, you has been told by Rohingya as Rohingya centric. If you do a bit of research, you’ll figure out multiple ethnic from Myanmar had similar experiences only except they wouldn’t blame the whole state but their tribal villages. And British bringing Rohingya back to Burma is also incomplete, British bring half a million of Indians (sik, pancha, and various others ethnic) into Burma as farm hands. They had had fair share of scrutiny from the government because you know it’s Burmese government is the military. But the rest of society, except them as brothers and cousins. They’re not talking about taking over the land. I really hope this end up good for Rohingya because even the other South East Asian Muslim nations are no longer accepting them.
Rohingyas are Indo European people. How are they overlapping the Sino Tibetan speaking people directly in Myanmar. Their genetics is no different than Bengali people according DNA test done in Malaysia and Thailand. Also their language is very close to Bangla with thick accent. There were no Indo European in this region until 1200 AD.
@@rodrozil6544 What are you even doing? Why is there so much hatred in your heart? Actual Burmese Buddhist people are telling you the real facts and you're here still trying to convince us that what you're saying is true. Not all people in Myanmar speak Tibeto-Burman languages! It's a diverse country, the first people in Myanmar were Austroasiatic Mon, everybody else came later. However, to say that Rohingyas are not native to Myanmar just because they speak an Indo-European language is NOT true! Maramagyi people in Myanmar speak a language that is classified as Indo-European and yet they are native to Myanmar and culturally related to majority Rakhine people. What does genetic testing prove? It proves that Rohingyas like many others in this region of Asia have ancestry related to AASI, Tibeto-Burman, Austroasiatic and Indo-Aryan.
@@rodrozil6544 Many other ethnic groups in Myanmar like Shan, Kachin and Karen have faced persecution too. Maybe stop making this about genetics and appearance (an extremely Nazi Hitler thing to do) and learn about the history of Myanmar!

I don't think Rohingya are native to Arakan state. The Rakhine people are native to Arakan. The Rohingya language is closely related to the Chittagonian language spoken in south eastern Bangladesh. That shows where the Rohingya came from originally. There were muslim communities in Arakan state in more older times but they were mainly traders and were small in numbers. The Rohingya try to claim that they are descended from those older small trading muslim communities but in actual fact, they are descended from much later immigrants from what was then British Bengal to British Burma. The British encouraged this types of mass movements of people throughout their empire.

The land of Rakhine used to be the ARAKAN kingdom, a subordinate kingdom of Bangladesh inhabited by the Rokhi people, then in 1785 the Burmese empire annexed the kingdom. Until in 1826 the British came to annex Burma. This was a fatal mistake by the British in making the wrong boundaries, Rakhine should have been part of Bangladesh. Because since ancient times the Arakan Mountains/Dragon Hills have been the boundary between India and Burma. Currently Myanmar can be said to be a modern Spanish colonial because it carried out ethnic cleansing against the indigenous people of the land.pbpjb
You are right but also wrong. Arakan was ancient civilization that got highly influenced by ancient Indian and Bengali culture ( Just like how Japan took inspiration from Tang dyansty China). The region was highly developed and unified. Sometimes they fell into the influence of Bnegali kingdoms or Ancinet Burmese States ( Shree Krestra). But most of their time they ruled independently.
it’s just beyond my understanding how India, a Hindu Majority Country which the World Media Projects hate Muslims, gave the Rohingyas Asylum while Countries like Bangladesh and Indonesia a Muslim Majority kicked their own people out.
As a Polish's, knowing deeply about Myanmar. Do the Bengalis think that Burmese will forgive the actions of the British and Bengalis committed against the Burmese people during the Burmese Independence war?

Funny how all the feminist movement is more focused on game and movie characters being sexualised while groups of women are being abused this horribly and yet all I hear is how the latest game development was delayed due to boycott as the fictional characters are too sexualised and objectifying women...
despite fully understanding the psychology that leads to people behaving this way, it still boggles my mind that anyone, let alone large groups of people, is capable of such cruelty. and to then go on and think they're in the right for it too.
I have heard of this and I donated to a fund to help and I shared posts. It's all I can do from here. I had a friend who escaped Burma and came to America. He couldn't go home. His mother was still there. 😢
Pretty much. Just about any group without power is liable to favour a philosophy of peace and tolerance because they know that they are vulnerable to the whims of the powerful. When that group obtains power, they want to defend it, violently if necessary. Once a religion gains power, they tend to develop a war doctrine VERY quickly.

As long as they are willing to live alongside the locals. But rohingnya demanded to be on the top, to be given privileges like the locals and more. Accusing muslim in Malaysia refusing to help them.
This is such a rarely talked about issue. Thank you, Whistler for doing this. It would have been nice to mention the part Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg had played to make things categorically worse with relation to this genocide. Theres a lovely Johnny Harris video about Facebook and Myanmar, anyone who wishes to learn more should definitely head over and watch that. Long story short, in many places across the developing world, internet access is mostly coming in for the first time in people's hands via cellphone devices. Once online, due to language barriers, people tend to stick to their own language, and this is dominated by Facebook. Facebook likes engagement, higher engagement means higher ad revenue. People generally stay engaged with stuff that angers them over stuff that doesnt. This made hateful content being shown with greater priority over normal stuff. Users werent just posting random bits of hate speech but were putting down live locations of Rohingya people, telling them where to attack and whom to expect in opposition. Facebook made a genocide more efficient and made tons of money from it. They were asked to stop promoting hate speech by the rohingya diaspora but Facebook didn't care. For anyone who thinks Zuckerberg is some genius billionaire, a left wing hero that just hates Trump supporters and the USA, no, he doesnt. He cares more about money. Until the US senate stepped in with regulations, he made money supporting a genocide.

I remember as many flyers went around about this Genocide at my University. When talking about it I quickly find out that nearly no one knew where this is happening. Most people would send UN troops to Africa. Just an exempel to show that even the people who were interested in stopping the genocide...were not really interested. One could say the press did just their job...reporting about things that creates interest. On the other side...even the Rohingya are pro Jewish genocide when it comes to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
No West countries can't touch neighbouring countries to China. They can only use proxy. And here Rohingyas are proxy. An artificial ethnicity created by Anglos.
I think most people miss understand this onesided conflict. This is not based on religion as much as it is about race. A lot of Rohinga hindus have crossed over here in Bangladesh as well as muslims. In the late 70's president Zia asked them to come over, why didn't they? If they came over this "conflict" could have been avoided. And in return we could remove the "mongoloid asians" from our country. Would have been a win win for both.

International law and genocide scholars have accused Israeli officials of using dehumanizing language.[5] During the 2023 Israel-Hamas war, historian of genocide Omer Bartov warned that statements made by top Israeli officials "could easily be construed as indicating a genocidal intent."[6] " from Wikipedia.

Except it's not a genocide. Not even Antony Blinken or the UK government themselves have any evidence to offer to the 2020 Uyghur tribunal held in the UK.
This is just a smaller part of the massive war on minorities in myanmar. As a burmese citizen, there are news about a remotr village being burned everyday. I just want to inform that this is not just a rohinga issue, it is a whole issue about the junta's grip on power
By western media, it is only rohingya issue and Burmese buddhist are evil and are all same, me,you are Min Aung Hlaing are same,
Now these uncivilized people are killing each other.

I know what poeple you're talking about, but what is better? Blanket, self-absorbed ignorance like the rest ? How f-ed up the world is, including in the US is overwhelming.
It’s funny that on every continent where “the religion of peace” appears all the same problems start happening.
What do you expect? Their prophet married Aisha, a six years old child.
Yep. Agree from Thailand. Those people who are crying human rights will not take any one of them in
Agreed, Thai here.

It's not a poor example of Buddhism, but rather example of the power of right wing ideology. They ALWAYS use some religion or another as a multifaceted tool: shield, sword, and smokescreen. Even a religion as peaceful sounding on paper as Buddhism.

@rejvaik00 yes we did. And used invisible gods to justify it. For land, money, resources, women and simply hating our neighbors. It's nature.
This video as is typical with many of Simon's videos about controversial subjects just misses out inconvenient parts like the following:
- The Rohingya Muslims fought a war with the Burmese government from the 1940's to the 1980's with the aim of ethnically cleansing Rakhine Province of Burmese Buddhists and taking the land for themselves then having the Bangladeshi Army annex it so i was no longer part of Myanmar.

@@VanaeCavae These facts are intresting but aren't relevant. If the Rohingya have lived their for generations then they have a right to live in peace in that land, plain and simple. thanks for covering the background to this so thoroughly, I was aware of the current atrocities but not of the history. Devastating situation and hopefully with increasing international attention, pressure will be put on the aggressors to resolve this.

Unfortunately, the Rohingya are being unruly in Malaysia and Indonesia
Yes. Malaysian and Indonesian are well known to be very welcoming of foreigners. A lot of foreigners end up living in Malaysia for this reason. They can get jobs, families, home in Malaysian.
