As someone that has lost complete tanks over and over and over and thousands of dollars in fish, I want to say Listen to this man. Don't skimp and cut corners.
no skimmer on QT because it will skim out the cupramine. if you don't put live rock or something in the tank with bacteria in it to combat the ammonia you will need to do water changes every day.

Thanks for keeping things real....after 10yrs out of the hobby and 4 tanks years ago with no issues I got back into it think yeah I could do what I did before....nope! I lost $750 plus worth of fish to velvet with QT. I was too late to transfer and quarantine my fish. Now I’m fallow for 80 days.....shrimp run roost now. Thanks for sharing your info and keeping it simple for stupids like me out there. ✌️
Thanks for the lesson!!! Your timing is impeccable. We were just heading to the store today to purchase a rack to hold our 20 gal QT and our 30 gal external refugium. We've been shopping for filters for QT for the last 2 days. Now I know to order the Seachem copper stuff too. Great info Steve!
Hey ..Great video..I have nano 15 gal and I did introduce ick to it . Lost 2 clown fish and dottyback in course of last month . I'm turning my cichlid fry 10 gallon to a qt saltwater tank . My questions are : 1. My watchman goby is still in the main tank and not at all affected by ick . Can he be in there for the 6 to 8 ick starvation period in the main tank? 2. How you transfer the fish to main tank from qt with copper not to get copper trace to main tank ?
1. you need to get that watchman goby out or start the 6-8 week clock once he dies in there. 2. the amount of copper that will get into your main tank from the net won't do anything so don't worry about it.
Just a little confused on the process. So water changes do you add more copper each time? and when done do you empty tank? or can one keep a quaranteen tank up for lenths of time to add other fish in the futurte?
I have a 10 gallon quarantine tank that is not cycled. I have a sponge filter, heater and light like you do. After the 50% wc every other day do you add more copper, and if so how much do you add?
when i add copper i always dose half the recommended dosage on the bottle. that is more than enough. dosing what they say to dose is too close to toxic copper levels. you won’t need to do that many changes if you place something in your QT from your main tank. it could be a filter sock or a rock. just don’t put that back in your main tank when done.
Hi there. Is it good to put corals and Snails into your tank and leave them in there for about 7 weeks without putting in fish. This is because I don’t have room for a second quarantine tank just for corals.
Should I fill up the qt tank with my dt water? Or new water? Also should I just grab a sponge from my dt and put it in my qt tank? And how long do you need this qt tank to cycle for after you put the sponge in it?
GREAT QUESTIONS! yes you can use water from your display no problem since the cupramine will kill anything in that water, parasite - wise. the tank should cycle very fast, like less than a day. it will be safe providing that sponge was in the main tank for awhile...or any media you choose to put in.
Do a 10 % weekly water change in your main tank....so that's 1 gallon, every week. i don't know if you're talking about your main tank or quarantine tank.
Sorry I have a 60 gallon main tank and a little 10 gallon quartine tank. My question is.. is there a way to have a quartine tank without having to do so many water changes? Like how would I maintain it without putting live rock in Toto keep the cycle up? And so when I do water changes for my qt tank am I doing brand new water or am I putting my main tank water in the qt
either something with live bacteria needs to be in the QT or you need to do daily water changes or fish will die from ammonia / urine poisoning / the water.
use common sense with the fish. make sure they aren't jammed in there. yes vacuum out the food with a water change. no special lighting. i used a worklight with standard light bulb just to give them something
great vid. one of my clowns has ich or marine velvet, not sure which one. I am in the process of setting up a qt tank. i dont have anything seeded with bacteria obv bc my main tank is ich infested. it wouldnt be smart to add something from my display tank right?. would you recommend doing WC every other day? Or should i add dr. tims and the fish? thanks
put something from your tank in the QT for bacteria. also monitor for ammonia. i HIGHLY SUGGEST the ammonia badge by seachem. check out my list of what i use in the video descriptions of each video. it has links to it.
Hey! Cool vid thanks. just a question regarding the water change every other day? do you put back a few drops of cupramine to balance the dosege from the water change ?
i would dose about 1/4 of what they recommend. it's not an exact science. i never dose what the bottle says since it's very toxic and almost impossible to test in your water. i dose 50% of what they say and it's fine. that way if you put more in you won't OD
Great video, could you maybe do a video showing your process to safely transfer your fish from your QT to the DT? Also, where did you get that thermometer?
Should I add medication even if the fish doesn't have the disease or should I medicate them whem they do have a problem? i heard thatwhen you medicate them when they don't have any disease then the prasites will be immune to the medication. Is that true? what do you do?
great video thank you. i have one question tho. if i put something with the good bacteria in the tank from my display tank, will the copper kill the good bacteria?
@@ROTTERtube Thank you, i putvit in hopinv it would help. The water has gone cloudy, is this something i shoukd be wodried about. Im doing a water test now.
I bought a 120 gallon and plan on turning it into a reef tank, how big of a quarantine tank do I need for tangs and such kinds of fish? and why do you need to quarantine corals if they have no parasites?
good questions. i QT everything including coral because the water they come in on may have parasites. i use a separate small QT tank for coral and inverts only. i don't dose anything in that. just let it be for 6 weeks then put everything in the DT. make sure your QT is large enough for them to swim in. i have a 40 gallon QT ready to go if needed for my tangs
hypo salinity will not work. the only thing that will work is complete fresh water. fresh water will kill the parasites....it causes them to literally pop. they die. use copper for QT and I recommend half the recommended dose. the dose they recommend is too close to toxic levels. bad for fish.
@@ROTTERtube I set up a very similar tank to what you have. 10gallon, sponge filter from display tank(been in there a couple months) and pvc pipes. I also put a limewood airstone in for extra oxygen. 2 things. Is water flow important? Do I need a hang on filter or power head? Also I dont have a heater. Temp is currently at 73. Isn't lower temperatures better for killing ich than normal temperatures?
Question: do you have to put the filter with the good bacteria in it, AND also do a water change every other day? i thought the water changes were to get rid of ammonia, but then you said the filter bacteria gets rid of the ammonia. so do i have to do both?
Hi Steve, To dose Cupramine, am i putting the drops directly into the hospital tank when doing water changes or is it easier to mix into a pail? I have 5 gallon pails kicking around so it would prob be easier to dose knowing exactly the water volume. I also have a 30gallon rubbermaid garbage can with a pump . I wanted to go this route and have premixed saltwater with the copper solution but Will the copper stay in the pumps ? Thx bud
Great tip from well experienced. But I don't know how many fish I can put in 10g QT. When I put the fish into main display tank, how can I get rid of copper in the fish?.
Im buying a reef system on craigslist. Im wondering if i should fill up a 29 gallon with his saltwater and put his fish in it until the main tank recycles. Should i do this or just plob em in the main tank as soon as its set up?
i would keep them in QT for 4 weeks. i don't put anything in the main tank until it is QT. doesn't matter what water you use in the QT. make sure the ammonia doesn't spike in the QT. you will need to do water changes every other day at least if there is ammonia in the QT
I have had DT Empty for 7 weeks on Oct 4 and fish treated with Cupermine for 4 weeks. Should I wait another week for Display tank? I had a really bad Ich outbreak which killed a lot of my fish. I only left an Urchin, Snails and 2 cleaner shrimp. Thanks your Videos are Great!
Rotter Tube Reef I had about 30 fish in my tank; I have about 18 left. Most have died due to stress I believe from the copper also I have a lot of fish who have just become irritated and are going after each other. I have had to divide and originally I had a 40 gallon breeder and now I have them in 150 with only 100 gallon full.
So I set up a 20 gallon QT tank and when I filled it I used the water from my main tank when I did a water change seeing that the cycle and healthy things are already there. I've had it running for about a week now. I also put an extra marine land canister filter with just the ceramic and plastic bio-balls inside with the filter floss. NO CARBON as I just want to kind of have a canister sump kind of thing. I have a heater that is set to 78 degrees and a small circulation pump to keep the water flowing. the only thing I can think of adding is some PVC pipe for the fish to hide. Any thoughts?
that's good. make sure there is a large population on the bio balls and ceramic. in a canister filter i would only use foam but since you're using it for bacteria that's good
The cupramine, if that's what you're referring to, will kill the parasites once they come off the body of the fish. If you don't use it, they will keep multiplying, just as they did in your main tank.
yes, do that, but i recommend always using half the dose they recommend....both times. that way, if you go over, you won't OD the fish and possibly kill them. or, use 75% of what they say....up to you. I use half the dose.
Hi steve, my blue tank got ich again in the QT tank. He still eating fine. Am i not put enough cupramine? Or its because i put wool filter? Should i remove the wool filter or just leave it? Thanks
dose half the recommended amount as often as the bottle says. i dosed every other day then did a water change on the 4 th day for 6 weeks. the 3rd week i dosed nothing and gave the fish a break.
I need to get myself a qt tank just incase of a emergency, i have a sponge in my sump from a old sponge filter just incase I need to setup a tank quick. great video buddy 👌
nice!!!! yeah, a QT is something i don't have running all the time. some people have one running all the time in case it's needed. that's a great idea.....i just don't. i think the reason is because i have been so careful with the main tank to have no parasites in it that i don't need one. i have the gear ready so i can set one up in an hour if needed.
+Rotter Tube Reef I struggled with parasites in past with my freshwater tanks but not this time I'm prepared just in case I got a 60 litre tank in the loft incase I need it to setup fast with the sponge in my sump
So wait don't I have to redose the copper in the Q tank if I were to do a water change every two days? since the medication is taken out by the water change? also how much of a water change should I do? 10%? also last question, instead of seeding the foam sponge, can't i just add some water from the display tank and add some new freshly mix saltwater?
you will have to add the same amount of copper. I recommend dosing half of what the bottle says...that's more than enough. bacteria doesn't come over in water very well. best to use media from your main tank for seeding.
they are heavy enough where they don't float. i dose half the recommended amount of cupramine. half the dose works great and is way less harmful to the fish
good question. just go....but, make sure to put something in from your sump. something with bacteria on it. i have used a sump sock in the past. you will never use this again, because it will get copper on it.
there are instructions on the bottle on how to dose. i also made a video on this a couple years ago. dose how they say to dose but i recommend 50% the strength. if they say dose 45 drops, i dose about 25.
I'm setting up a 20 QT tank tomorrow for my dogface who has ich. I am planning to do a water change on my DT tank and using 10 gallons of the water from my tank and 10 gallons of treated RO water combined. I have bought bio spira just to make sure i have enough bacteria to seed my tank along with a heater, an extra filter with bio balls that I'm pulling from my DT and a new power head. Didn't have any PVC, but I have a couple terra cotta pots. Am I way off base here or would this be okay also. I bought cupramine and a copper test kit.
great work! the copper test kits are VERY HARD to read. i actually never test copper levels. i dose HALF of the recommended dose and it's MORE than enough. this way you can't accidentally OD THE FISH AND KILL THEM. copper is brutal so half is fine.
Ok thank you for your insight. I keep testing my copper levels and it looks as tho they are .1 if that at all. I will keep in mind what you said. thanks. This fish keeping stuff is exhausting at times;)
Great vid. Can you quarantine leopard wrasse without sand? Would they be more stressed if sleeping inside the pvc fitting (against their nature habitat)? Also, digging on glass or pvc fitting may result in damage to their teeth. Any thoughts on this? Thks
Nice vid, man... I new into the hobby and just start cycling my MT. Just a question, so once my MT get cycled.. i need to take some water from it to my QT (and the air filter that has been in MT for a month or so)?
Im about to start putting life in my tank. If I buy a few different fish can I put them all together in qt tank before I put them in the tank or would they have to go one at a time.....
Do you have a video on how to start a quarantine tank for a new reef? I'm just setting all mine up, and have found alot of conflicting info on how to do this. I'm figuring I will have to cycle the qt just like my display. Any help is appreciated.
yeah, this video was that. i also did one about 2 years ago. there isn't much cycling since there is no sand or rock...just water and tank. for this reason, you put a foam filter in like what i have pictured...BUT....if you know you are getting a new fish, you will keep the foam filter in your main tank for about a month. let the bacteria breed on it. put it in your qt and you're set. if you don't have something ready, you can put some foam or your sump sock in there. put foam filtration from a canister filter or anything that has been sitting in the display tank for at least a couple weeks.
What if you didn’t have a foam filter ready to go from the display tank? Can I take out a filter sock and just throw it in the quarantine tank? But filter socks were recently cleaned?
you can do that but if they were recently cleaned, then the bacteria is gone. you can never use that sock in your display tank again though...there will be copper on it
By adding a sponge from the dt and half the water with copper treatment what should be the maintenance on the tank like water changes and how to replace the copper from the water charge
great question. you're right on target with the sponge from DT! that's what i do...or use a rock from DT. or filter floss from DT. use an ammonia badge in QT and also do a weekly water change if ammonia is zero! you can always do a water change twice a week if you want. i do one once a week of 50%
On my dt should I be dosing anything if I remove all my fish due to ich to replace all the ammonia for the beneficial bacteria or how should I go about it
About the Fresh Water dip acclimation. What is the procedure? You said you fresh water dip the fish for 1 minute then acclimate to the saltwater for the QT tank. I'm confused. Thank you.
i let them swim in freshwater for a minute or less then add 50% of my tank water to the freshwater they are in. 5 minutes later i add 20% more saltwater from the tank, then 20% more 5 or 10 minutes later.
@@ROTTERtube Do you net the fish into the fresh from the QT? There is no chance of the copper water contaminating the fresh water dip? During the adding of water, do you remove any at all? After the last add do you pour the fish into your display tank or net it in? Thank you again.
yes, so the bacteria will breed on it and keep the ammonia levels down....which is fish urine. if you don't have live bacteria on the filter, you need to change water 50% every day.
So how long do I need to wait before first using the quarantine tank if I don’t have a bacteria filled foam filter ready to go? I saw a tang at my LFS, would love to grab it before someone else buys it.
Very cool video brother, thanks for the advice. Quick question though… You mentioned that you do a one minute freshwater dip and then acclimate them to the salt water in the quarantine. How do you do that? If you only leave the fission for a minute where do you put it while acclimating to the salt water
Thanks for this video about QT/hospital tank setup. I am a new and hopefully soon to be reefer in research mode. And I have questions about this pertaining to a new fully cycled main tank ready for first fish/inverts for anyone that knows :). The good bacteria that you introduce to the sponge filter, should I have one of these filters setup and running in the main tank as it goes through the setup cycle process? Won't the cupramine copper treatment instantly kill the good bacteria as well in the sponge filter after it is moved to the QT tank? Does the copper treatment harm chaetomorpha algae? And last question about coral and invert quarantine can they also be dipped in fresh RODI for a minute before being placed in there own QT tank? Thanks for any thoughts or advice friends. ;)
hey Allen, yep, there is a lot to research but you'll learn it over time and keep learning. cupramine / copper will not kill the good bacteria. this is fact, so you'll be fine. dipping the coral in fresh water will help but inverts don't like it and they can die. this is why i use a 2nd tank with saltwater. it guarantees no ich or parasites after being kept for 6 weeks. yes i know it sound like a hassle but your tank will be solid!
add a shrimp from the butcher in there.....or a piece of meat or some fish food. let it rot. get a test kit to test the ammonia levels. they will peak it's not ready. wait for them to drop to 0. when they do, you're all set. takes about a month.
I have a Rabbitfish that I have quarantined for a month in a separate tank. No meds or symptoms. I have it in a barebottom 20 gallon. I also have liverock in it. I was told that if I put the medicine in, the bacteria in it will die but it will keep the pH stable, so if I don't care about the liverock, can I just put the meds in the quarantine tank?
If we had to add a fish directly into the DT, can't we just do so after giving them a 1 minute freshwater bath? Wouldn't that ensure the bacteria pops?
When transferring the fish do you give them a fresh water bath before placing them in your main tank? If not then is it safe to place the fish in your main tank after they have been in copper water?
Thanks for the reply! One more quick question. Are their any kinds of fish that shouldn’t be quarantined with copper? I know clean up crews and corals are a no go with copper but I’m planning on getting a trigger fish and a gobi here soon and was wondering if they needed to go through the same process as the clowns, tangs etc.
Two questions. 1: can you qt mutipule fish in the same tank? Say like a pair of clowns. 2: can you dose a qt tank with beneficial bacteria to combat the ammonia if you dont have a filter with it already in it?
good question. yes, i have put all my fish in qt when i was first hit with this. no issues. bacteria in a bottle does nothing. i would rely on real bacteria. take a rock out of your main tank or something that has been sitting in your main tank, like a sponge or sump sock or something. never use that piece of media in your main tank again though.
the net would transfer copper but it is so small you don't have to worry about it at all. I have put some aquarium water in a bowl and put the fish in that bowl, then just pour them into the main tank so no net would touch the tank.
@@ROTTERtube thanks, that is a great idea, I am on my 3rd week quarantine for a batfish and hippotang, they are in a bare bottom 55 on cupramin and I have water temp at 84F because I thought that would accelerate any weird disease, I really didn't think of transfer until now lol. My DT is 225 and used to house anemone, clowns and lps corals, last summer I put a couple blue damsels in and within 5 days every fish was dead, it's been empty since August.
Hey what if I dont have any fish in the main tank and only sand and rock ? I'm asking because you said not to just buy the filter sponge and insert it to QT .
@@ROTTERtube ok...cool. I've been doing a 25% change every 4 or 5 days on my 20 gallon QT. Wasn't sure if that was doing more harm than good. 2-3 gallons once a week is more manageable . Thanks again!!
yes once a week is so much better. that's one great benefit to the smaller tanks. you can maintain water stability easier...less water, easier to do a 50% water change if needed.
Hello. I’m new to the marine hobbie. I’m researching and educating myself before even buying a tank. Just a question regarding the quarantine tank. Is this just a salt water mix with a heater and filter? So their is no cycling going on. Just rodi water and salt?
that is correct but you would be smart to cycle it or have something in the tank with bacteria in it. if you don't the fish will die from their urine....ammonia. you can't have any ammonia in the water. since it's a new tank you would cycle it or do a 50% water change with new saltwater every day. it's a hassle but that's what you'd need to do. good for you for researching. most people don't!
do you just toss the foam filter once your done with the qt? i'm curious because i have a small apartment and im wondering if having a empty qt tank near my kitchen bar would be beneficial to run 24/7 if i'm not qt'ing anything for months at a time ... could i just shut it down and get things back and running whenever i plan on getting new fish later down the road? any advise would be greatly appreciated!!
All my fishes are dying right now because of marine velvet :-( ! Thought it will be fine without QT . Now I have to learn it the hard way. Going to setup QT today!!
so sorry to hear about this. so many people think it will never happen to them. so many people have managed to avoid it for years but it only takes one time. at least now you know what to do. i have a lot of videos on how to kill ich and marine velvet. i keep spreading the word.
@@ROTTERtube Yeah I saw your vids about killing ich and velvet for good. Will follow your instructions. Thank you very much for that content, helps a lot!!
@@ROTTERtube thank for the reply I have a 29g with a HOB was thinking of using it as a QT and setting up downstairs away from the DT. I believe my clowns have velvet do I follow the same procedure as the ich treatment? And do I use the water from the DT to fill the QT? I'm sorry I'm very new to the hobby and just ordered my cupramine
I have been using prime to treat my water for my QT tank, but I am letting the treated water with prime set 48 hours before I do a water change in my QT. I hear prime can make copper levels crazy toxic for fish...my question is, is 48 hours enough time to make the prime become ineffective to the copper? Thanks.
i don't use prime. mixed with cupramine it WILL turn that tank toxic and your fish will more than likely die. as for time, i can't say. i wouldn't mix the two...it's bad.
oh crap, thanks. I trust you more than the websites I read. What do you use to treat the water? I have been doing water changes every three days or so, I have an ammonia badge and I test the water daily.
Hi Erica, thanks so much! i don't use anything to treat the water...i make my own water / purified from the tap, which an RODI unit. this is the one my brother has and it's great. amzn.to/2rM6MOP
Hey Steve, I saw that you have a video on how to dose copper but on this video you say half dose! On the older video you said to dose 15 drops for every 10 gal and on the bottle it says 16 for every 10.5gal, so do I dose 8 drops ?
i would recommend dosing half of what the bottle says. in the other video i was probably dosing what the bottle said. to be safe, do half of what they say....roughly. it's not a perfect science. i would say 8 drops then.
Hey, I’m planning on setting up a 120 gallon reef tank. I’ll have mainly small fish but I may get 1 or 2 tangs. So, what sized QT tank should I get for tangs and other smaller fishes. Please tell me. I’m 12 years old ( I’m gonna be 13 in 1 week ) Love from Bangladesh, I subbed. Please reply.
@@ROTTERtube I’ll prolly keep 1 tomini tang and a foxface. Those will be the biggest fish in the tank. So, what sized qt tank will I need for them? I will not buy adult fish, I’ll get juveniles. And should I quarantine snails and other inverts as well? If so how should I quarantine snails and startfishes? Specially nassarius snails and sand sifting starfishes. I’m sorry if I’m asking too many questions. It’s because it’s my first time and everything reef related is very expensive in Bangladesh and I don’t want to mess up.

If you have rock in your qt won’t the copper kill the parasite before it’ll go into live rock? Thank you for your educational video on qt!
@@lucasreichmuth2083 the copper will kill all parasites in the water
Hey so on the back of seachem cupramine it says “use first day, wait 48 hours then repeat”. Should do this or is this to much.

Gr8 video, I've learned alot, thanks
Glad to help
A great video that is still generating questions and answers for QT beginners like myself. Thanks Rotter.
As someone that has lost complete tanks over and over and over and thousands of dollars in fish, I want to say Listen to this man. Don't skimp and cut corners.
It's hard to not cut corners, but you have to do it the right way. Thanks!
Thanks so much wifey and I are new to the hobby and will be setting up a quarantine tank...Thanks again!

Excellent video. How much water should we change every other day. can we put nano skimmer on quarantine tank
no skimmer on QT because it will skim out the cupramine. if you don't put live rock or something in the tank with bacteria in it to combat the ammonia you will need to do water changes every day.
Will filter floss take out cupramine? Or a bio sponge? And what copper test do you recommend i used the api test and it's clear

Def recommend this lol, i got marine velvet and lost 450$ worth of fish
Thanks for keeping things real....after 10yrs out of the hobby and 4 tanks years ago with no issues I got back into it think yeah I could do what I did before....nope! I lost $750 plus worth of fish to velvet with QT. I was too late to transfer and quarantine my fish. Now I’m fallow for 80 days.....shrimp run roost now. Thanks for sharing your info and keeping it simple for stupids like me out there. ✌️
that sux! sorry to hear that. i was there too when i started.
Great info Steve!
great! good luck. cutting the dose in half is more than enough.
Great Video. Thank you! Starting my cycle tomorrow and will throw a filter in there for 4 weeks so I can QT my first few fish.
Steve is the best listen to his advice even I listen he knows his marine biology.
hey Alfred, thanks, hope you're well!
Hey ..Great video..I have nano 15 gal and I did introduce ick to it . Lost 2 clown fish and dottyback in course of last month . I'm turning my cichlid fry 10 gallon to a qt saltwater tank . My questions are :
Steve great video that is the rite way to quarantine fish. We did this when I had the whole sale stores.
awesome
Just a little confused on the process. So water changes do you add more copper each time? and when done do you empty tank? or can one keep a quaranteen tank up for lenths of time to add other fish in the futurte?
yes, add more copper each time. many people keep a quarantine tank running in case they need it.
Enjoyed this video. I think I will set one up for my newly planned tank. I’ve went through problems in the past. You’re absolutely right.
yes i highly recommend it
Thanks so much!! How long do you think the foam filter needs to sit in the sump of my display tank before it’s good to use?
i kept mine in for a month
I have a 10 gallon quarantine tank that is not cycled. I have a sponge filter, heater and light like you do. After the 50% wc every other day do you add more copper, and if so how much do you add?
when i add copper i always dose half the recommended dosage on the bottle. that is more than enough. dosing what they say to dose is too close to toxic copper levels. you won’t need to do that many changes if you place something in your QT from your main tank. it could be a filter sock or a rock. just don’t put that back in your main tank when done.
@@ROTTERtube so are you saying you could put a piece of liv e rock from your main tank instead of the sponge filter?
Hi there. Is it good to put corals and Snails into your tank and leave them in there for about 7 weeks without putting in fish. This is because I don’t have room for a second quarantine tank just for corals.
yes you can do that
Should I fill up the qt tank with my dt water? Or new water? Also should I just grab a sponge from my dt and put it in my qt tank? And how long do you need this qt tank to cycle for after you put the sponge in it?
GREAT QUESTIONS! yes you can use water from your display no problem since the cupramine will kill anything in that water, parasite - wise. the tank should cycle very fast, like less than a day. it will be safe providing that sponge was in the main tank for awhile...or any media you choose to put in.
Rotter Tube Reef thank you so much for the fast response. You just gained a sub👍👍
cool thanks! good luck. check our facebook group as well. link in video description. great people and lots of them always willing to help.
How much of a water change would you recommend for a 10 gallon? If I were to remove all fish from my tank do I put it in a super big tank? 20 gallon?
for a QT water change, AT LEAST 50% for your main tank, 10%
I’m sorry I didn’t understand that. So add some of my main tank water into the 10 gallon?
How many fish can you put in a single QT? How much do you feed the fish and do you clean out the food? Does the QT need a light?
use common sense with the fish. make sure they aren't jammed in there. yes vacuum out the food with a water change. no special lighting. i used a worklight with standard light bulb just to give them something
Nice video Steve. Like the coral beauty there lovely fish. I shall try my QT with the chevron tank i am considering buying. Take it easy ✌️️
thanks Matt. yes, good luck. these are my brother's fish
great vid. one of my clowns has ich or marine velvet, not sure which one.
Also, where did you get that thermometer?
hi, i made a video on that awhile ago. maybe one year ago? i got the thermometer on amazon.
Should I add medication even if the fish doesn't have the disease or should I medicate them whem they do have a problem? i heard thatwhen you medicate them when they don't have any disease then the prasites will be immune to the medication. Is that true? what do you do?
all saltwater fish should be medicated in a QT...that's the point of putting them in QT. ice won't become immune to it since it kills ich.
Does uv sterilizer help clear ich and marine velvet from your main tank quicker? Or even at all?
no, not at all
great video thank you.
i have one question tho. if i put something with the good bacteria in the tank from my display tank, will the copper kill the good bacteria?
no, you'll be fine. copper won't harm the bacteria.
Hyposalinity vs Cupramine Copper for quarantining. What's your thoughts?
hypo salinity will not work. the only thing that will work is complete fresh water. fresh water will kill the parasites....it causes them to literally pop. they die. use copper for QT and I recommend half the recommended dose. the dose they recommend is too close to toxic levels. bad for fish.
Question: do you have to put the filter with the good bacteria in it, AND also do a water change every other day? i thought the water changes were to get rid of ammonia, but then you said the filter bacteria gets rid of the ammonia. so do i have to do both?
if you put something with good bacteria in it, you’ll be fine. i would do a 50% water change once a week.
@@ROTTERtube thank you!
yet another perfect clear helpful video
keep em coming
thanks! i just turned the mic on and riffed on the topic. wanted to make it clear. i may be doing more of these. i enjoy the podcast type thing
Hi Steve,
To dose Cupramine, am i putting the drops directly into the hospital tank when doing water changes or is it easier to mix into a pail? I have 5 gallon pails kicking around so it would prob be easier to dose knowing exactly the water volume. I also have a 30gallon rubbermaid garbage can with a pump . I wanted to go this route and have premixed saltwater with the copper solution but Will the copper stay in the pumps ?
Thx bud
just put the drops directly in the tank
Great video! One small question, when you do a water change every other day, do you add more cupramine to the new water?
yes, half dose
Do I need to dose them everyday? Or just onse a week
Instructions on the bottle. I believe it was first day, then 3rd day, then weekly.
Great tip from well experienced. But I don't know how many fish I can put in 10g QT. When I put the fish into main display tank, how can I get rid of copper in the fish?.
i do a quick freshwater dip but the small amount of copper on them will do nothing to your tank
Hi rotter, when doing water changes do i have to dose 50% of cupramine or i just leave the tank with water changes only? Thanks
after water changes, dose 50% of what they recommend, again. read what they say to do but cut it in half
@@ROTTERtube What percentage of water change do you recommend when treating with copper?
Thanks your Videos are Great!
welcome! i think 7 weeks is fine. what's one more week though, to be safe. how are the fish doing in the qt?
Rotter Tube Reef
I had about 30 fish in my tank; I have about 18 left. Most have died due to stress I believe from the copper also I have a lot of fish who have just become irritated and are going after each other. I have had to divide and originally I had a 40 gallon breeder and now I have them in 150 with only 100 gallon full.
that's a good idea. they could have died from crammed quarters / stress, ammonia in tank, copper, the parasite. so hard to tell.
Any thoughts?
that's good. make sure there is a large population on the bio balls and ceramic. in a canister filter i would only use foam but since you're using it for bacteria that's good
Great video, I feel the medication is unnecessary if you’re QT for a month but some excellent advice here…
The cupramine, if that's what you're referring to, will kill the parasites once they come off the body of the fish. If you don't use it, they will keep multiplying, just as they did in your main tank.
Can you recommend an air pump to use with this filter. Thanks!
anything you find in your price range will do. cheap will do. it's only a QT
Great video. Thankyou for your info.😊
You are so welcome!
How many oz copper for 10 gallon tank? I got same seachem
i forgot the dose amount what they say on the bottle. just divide by 2, whatever it tells you.
Rotter Tube Reef it say 1ml for 10.5 gallon so i should use only 0.5ml right?
yes
Hey so on the back of seachem cupramine it says “use first day, wait 48 hours then repeat”. Should I do this or is this to much. Thanks for your help.
yes, do that, but i recommend always using half the dose they recommend....both times. that way, if you go over, you won't OD the fish and possibly kill them. or, use 75% of what they say....up to you. I use half the dose.
Thank you
Hi steve, my blue tank got ich again in the QT tank.
How about the wool filter in the filter box? Should i remove it or just leave it?does it effects anything to the cupramine?
you should be fine. i never used much of a filter except one of the foam ones with air hose
How do you get your pvc pipes to stop floating? Also do you dose full amount for ich/velvet? Thanks
they are heavy enough where they don't float. i dose half the recommended amount of cupramine. half the dose works great and is way less harmful to the fish
Do you have to dose the quarantine tank or check the parameters except for ammonia?
yes, dose the qt with cupramine, only half dose of what they recommend. lookout for ammonia....it will kill your fish.
When setting up a QT? Do you wait for a cycle or just dump the water and meds and go?
good question. just go....but, make sure to put something in from your sump. something with bacteria on it. i have used a sump sock in the past. you will never use this again, because it will get copper on it.
do you dose cooper only once in that 4-6 week in qt? water changes dilutes the Cooper .
there are instructions on the bottle on how to dose. i also made a video on this a couple years ago. dose how they say to dose but i recommend 50% the strength. if they say dose 45 drops, i dose about 25.
Thks
i've done it. some people have put a little bowl of sand in the QT
So do you always have one set up running at all times or setup week or 2 b4 you plan to buy a fish?
good question. some people always have a setup. i don't. i set it up as needed.
Nice vid, man... I new into the hobby and just start cycling my MT. Just a question, so once my MT get cycled.. i need to take some water from it to my QT (and the air filter that has been in MT for a month or so)?
you got it!
You mentioned a freshwater dip for a minute. if nothing comes off the fish and no parasites do you still do a copper treatment?
hi Tim, I ALWAYS do mild copper treatment for at least 3 weeks when buying a new fish.
Im about to start putting life in my tank. If I buy a few different fish can I put them all together in qt tank before I put them in the tank or would they have to go one at a time.....
you can put them all in QT but you need to make sure that QT is cycled or you'll be doing full water changes daily.
If I have 30 gallon quarantine tank how much copper I need to put in there/drops or ML’s
I recommend half the dose of what the bottle says. it always works and is the safest.
Do you have a video on how to start a quarantine tank for a new reef? I'm just setting all mine up, and have found alot of conflicting info on how to do this. I'm figuring I will have to cycle the qt just like my display. Any help is appreciated.
yeah, this video was that. i also did one about 2 years ago. there isn't much cycling since there is no sand or rock...just water and tank. for this reason, you put a foam filter in like what i have pictured...BUT....if you know you are getting a new fish, you will keep the foam filter in your main tank for about a month. let the bacteria breed on it. put it in your qt and you're set. if you don't have something ready, you can put some foam or your sump sock in there. put foam filtration from a canister filter or anything that has been sitting in the display tank for at least a couple weeks.
i feel like JOE DE ROSA is telling me about a quarantine tank
Fresh water tank question... how about Neon tetra. corydoras and otocinclus is it safe to quarantine them using the same metod you mentioned?
I'm not sure how fresh water fish react to cupramine. haven't had fresh water tanks in years.
@@ROTTERtube ok tnks anyway
What if you didn’t have a foam filter ready to go from the display tank? Can I take out a filter sock and just throw it in the quarantine tank? But filter socks were recently cleaned?
you can do that but if they were recently cleaned, then the bacteria is gone. you can never use that sock in your display tank again though...there will be copper on it
Thanks for the video. When you say fresh water bath do you mean fresh rodi with no salt?
yes that's correct
When do I put the fish in a freshwater dip through out those 4 weeks
Usually before you put them in QT.
What do u do if you dont have another tank to put the sponge in for the bacteria
You can put a rock from your current tank and then don't use that rock again in your main tank.
By adding a sponge from the dt and half the water with copper treatment what should be the maintenance on the tank like water changes and how to replace the copper from the water charge
great question. you're right on target with the sponge from DT! that's what i do...or use a rock from DT. or filter floss from DT. use an ammonia badge in QT and also do a weekly water change if ammonia is zero! you can always do a water change twice a week if you want. i do one once a week of 50%
On my dt should I be dosing anything if I remove all my fish due to ich to replace all the ammonia for the beneficial bacteria or how should I go about it
Good video
Glad you enjoyed
If new fish has no sign of parasite after 4weeks in qt, you can move your new fish to the dt without cupramine treatment? Tnx
you can but i always use cupramine in QT no matter what. half dose is perfect...dose half of what the bottle recommends always
Rotter Tube Reef i have api liquid super ich cure it is ok a brand ?
About the Fresh Water dip acclimation. What is the procedure? You said you fresh water dip the fish for 1 minute then acclimate to the saltwater for the QT tank. I'm confused. Thank you.
i let them swim in freshwater for a minute or less then add 50% of my tank water to the freshwater they are in. 5 minutes later i add 20% more saltwater from the tank, then 20% more 5 or 10 minutes later.
@@ROTTERtube Thank you sir!
@@ROTTERtube Do you net the fish into the fresh from the QT? There is no chance of the copper water contaminating the fresh water dip? During the adding of water, do you remove any at all? After the last add do you pour the fish into your display tank or net it in? Thank you again.
Do i really need a foam filter? thx you
yes, so the bacteria will breed on it and keep the ammonia levels down....which is fish urine. if you don't have live bacteria on the filter, you need to change water 50% every day.
So how long do I need to wait before first using the quarantine tank if I don’t have a bacteria filled foam filter ready to go? I saw a tang at my LFS, would love to grab it before someone else buys it.
you can do it now, just do a 50% water change every 2 days or the fish will die of ammonia poisoning
Very cool video brother, thanks for the advice. Quick question though… You mentioned that you do a one minute freshwater dip and then acclimate them to the salt water in the quarantine. How do you do that? If you only leave the fission for a minute where do you put it while acclimating to the salt water
I add the saltwater from the main tank to the freshwater container they are in
@@ROTTERtube thank you
Thanks for this video about QT/hospital tank setup.
Thanks for the reply. That's great to know.
How long do you cycle your QT? I added a bottle of bacteria, how long do I need to wait?
add a shrimp from the butcher in there.....or a piece of meat or some fish food. let it rot. get a test kit to test the ammonia levels. they will peak it's not ready. wait for them to drop to 0. when they do, you're all set. takes about a month.
I have a Rabbitfish that I have quarantined for a month in a separate tank. No meds or symptoms. I have it in a barebottom 20 gallon. I also have liverock in it. I was told that if I put the medicine in, the bacteria in it will die but it will keep the pH stable, so if I don't care about the liverock, can I just put the meds in the quarantine tank?
it won't kill the bacteria in the liverock
If we had to add a fish directly into the DT, can't we just do so after giving them a 1 minute freshwater bath? Wouldn't that ensure the bacteria pops?
good question. it's risky. i would never do it
Fresh water dip is excellent same temp do chlorinated water. Florida two more weeks😎
nice
Very good information that is why I watch your videos I did not know that ich will still thrive in the main tank after treating
the fish
ich will DIE in the main tank if fish are out of it for 6 weeks minimum
When transferring the fish do you give them a fresh water bath before placing them in your main tank? If not then is it safe to place the fish in your main tank after they have been in copper water?
you can do either way. the amount of copper on the fish is so small it's nothing
Can you please go over how you transfer fish from hospital tank to main tank? A net would transfer copper no?
the net would transfer copper but it is so small you don't have to worry about it at all.
If you see ick on the fish do you ever bump it up to full dose copper or do you still leave it at have dose?
half dose always and it works great.
Ok, maybe a really dumb question, but what’s hooked up to the sponge filter? Just a small air pump?
Phil Landau yes
Hey what if I dont have any fish in the main tank and only sand and rock ? I'm asking because you said not to just buy the filter sponge and insert it to QT .
Thanks Man.👍 Good advice 👍
WELCOME DUDE
Great information. How much water do you do when you do a water change? I appreciate all the honest and straight forward advice!!
hi ken, thanks. i do a 10% water change weekly
@@ROTTERtube ok...cool. I've been doing a 25% change every 4 or 5 days on my 20 gallon QT. Wasn't sure if that was doing more harm than good. 2-3 gallons once a week is more manageable . Thanks again!!
yes once a week is so much better. that's one great benefit to the smaller tanks. you can maintain water stability easier...less water, easier to do a 50% water change if needed.
if it's a QT i would recommend every few days unless you have something in there to house bacteria. you don't want ammonia taking over.
@@ROTTERtube ok. Good! Yes it is a QT and I'm monitoring ammonia. None the less I'll do 50% every 4 days or so. I appreciate all the advice
Can I use one sponge filter if I don't use the filter in any other tank?
yes
Also I was using another tank for QT, I was wondering if tank left empty for how long will Ich die?
do you just toss the foam filter once your done with the qt? i'm curious because i have a small apartment and im wondering if having a empty qt tank near my kitchen bar would be beneficial to run 24/7 if i'm not qt'ing anything for months at a time ... could i just shut it down and get things back and running whenever i plan on getting new fish later down the road? any advise would be greatly appreciated!!
yes you can
All my fishes are dying right now because of marine velvet :-( !
Thank you very much for that content, helps a lot!!
can you use a hob filter for the QT ?
best to get a small tank. you don't want any water that's contaminated getting close to your main tank
So I add top up extra copper when I change water
yes, exactly
What is the recomended salinity for the quarantine tank ?
1.018 because you use less salt and there is more oxygen in the water that way for the fish. or you can stay at 1.024
What if im dosing copper on the qt? How do i transfer the fish from qt to main display?
i will acclimate the fish from the qt to the water in the dt via a couple containers
Hi Erica, thanks so much! i don't use anything to treat the water...i make my own water / purified from the tap, which an RODI unit. this is the one my brother has and it's great. amzn.to/2rM6MOP
thank you for your advice!
120 is fine for one tang, maybe 2 at most.
