The new Honda NC 750 X, DCT - Is it good enough?
My middleweight adventure motorcycles series continue with the new Honda NC 750 X with DCT transmission. I had the chance to have it for test ride and to be honest I was nicely surprised. I did not expect to have such a fun ride from automatic motorcycle. It has 750cc paralel twin engine with 55 H.P. The design is very good and the building quality is excellent. The only downsize, at least for me was the 17th Inch front wheel, but it could be the perfect travel motorcycle for many of you.

For me Honda bikes are always well built, good solid materials especially their engines. DCT transmissions are the future despite the weight penalty they come with but it can deliver better linear power and shift convenience.

Thanks for the Honda nc750x dct test.
I bought mine a year ago and I am very happy. Probably not great for travelling for best bike for commuting.
I do about 40 km per day with a 3.3 liters/100 km and that is unbeatable.
Position is very comfortable and no shifting in traffic or city makes it perfect. You can go to the city in the highway like a regular bike and in the city is like an scooter. Best of both worlds.
I agree is not an adventure bike but.let's be honest how many of us do that

I have a 2017 model, with the full Adventure pack which includes full luggage, mainstand, engine bars, spotlamps, heated grips and a rear carrier. It is remarkably frugal, 80+mpg being easily attained. Motorway cruising at 90mph is perfectly possible, the engine pulling less than 5000rpm. It is perfectly smooth at all speeds and the DCT is a work of genius! As you said, build quality is among the best. All said, I love mine and am looking forward to a 3 week Continental trip in July. Great review of a great bike.

I have the the nc750s 2017 model. Driven in city, highway, curvy roads and long trips up to 1000km on one go.
You really have to understand this engine. Its not meant to be a sportbike, its a commuting practical bike, with the occasional fast pace riding. You can ride it agresively, if you dont mind changing gears bellow 6250rpm.
    Pros:
    - plenty of torque, pulls like a mule, dont have to change speed often
    - very easy to ride, low center of gravity, feels lighter than 220kg
    - 3,6l in city, 4,5l at 140km/h on highway fully loaded with topbox and pillion, very economical engine
    - very practical because of the luggage space
    - probably the best commuting bike
    - amazing exhaust sound, has 270' crankshaft so it sounds like a v-twin
    - nice suspension, very comfortable on potholes
    Cons:
    - even with aftermarket turing visor, lots of wind on highway
    - pulls great up to 120km/h, after that it picks up speed very slowly
    - seats are nice for commuting, but not so good for touring, u start to feel it after an hour of riding

Great review like usually... great job man! 👍🏻👍🏻
I have nc750x, manual, four years already. 19,000km on the odometer. Great bike. Thank God, zero problems. I make mine 12kg heavier (aluminium top box, side carriers, centerstand, crash bars), the bike going very well. I using for road touring. My longest ride on highway was 970km. No problem at all. Redline start from 6,250rpm and torque peak from 4,750rpm. On highway I keeping 4,500-5,000rpm, in sixth gear speed is 140-155kph (depend of wind direction). In this case fuel consumption is 5-5,2l.
On local roads, where speed not exceeding 110kph (mostly 50-100) fuel consumption is 4 litres.
Wind protection is weak. I bought oem windshield, even do is weak protect. Then I attached Givi spoiler which help a lot. (I’m 188).
If you are riding alone you will get pure fun. If you have passenger you will miss fun on road.
The power is ok. Originally Honda took this engine from the car, they cut half and modify for the bike. So, this 54bhp maybe is not real number (Suzuki vstrom 650 has 70hp, but nc pulling better than vstrom).
Anyhow, great bike for road using and for light off road.
    Cheers 🏁🏁

I ride a 2017 Honda NC750X DCT and what I can say is I love that bike. Last year I drove 10.000km last year and in 2 month I ride with that bike to the Northcape. It is definitely a ride for long distances, 800km at one day is no poblem. It is very comfortable and very economic. Almost 400km with one tankful is possible. Power is absolutely enough, at least for me. But-and that is very clear- this bike is not suitable for heavy offroad. Light gravel roads are possible. I wonder why only Honda offers the DCT gear?? For the model they offer this (like NX750 and Africa twin) they sell more than 50% with DCT. I think if BMW offer the R1200GS with DCT as well I would buy that bike. Anyway, thank you Pavlin for all of your very authentic videos. You make a great job!!

      MarcoPolo Hi there
I am also verge on buying this bike🤪 I just wonder if you had any issues with dct gear box on “D” mode when cornering as it tends to change the gear in corners and hence rear tire skids a bit? And they say they added in 2018 models an option (HSTC maybe) to eliminate this problem?

I’ve wondered the same about BMW. They already have experience with DCT transmissions in their automotive lines.

I recently passed my A licence on the NC750S DCT, and found it great, very easy to slow manoeuvre with, with the DCT you just adjust technique a little thats all, instead of using/feathering clutch during slow turns etc, with the DCT in sports mode, you just give a little more throttle, and drag rear brake, makes handling the bike so much easier.
Its a great everyday bike, good commuter/some touring, does most things well, jack of all trades, master of none type of bike. Certainly isnt a speed freak machine, and with the DCT a joy to ride. The NC750X DCT will probably be the bike I will buy next month.

If you look back to the section where you comment on the engine rpms on the highway, I think you're in 5th gear, not 6th !! Probably because you have it in one of the 3 sport modes.

If you drive automatic cars then this bike will become second nature to you in no time...if you consider if one hundred years ago when all cars were first made they all had automatic gearboxes, then ten years later someone developed a manual gearbox he would be laughed out of the factory...but please remember in drive mode this bike gives almost 80 mpg...which is incredible..all the best from uk..

Excellent review! Bought this motorcycle a week ago - and I've looked through your videos last month to two with hope you did this review earlier ;)
Hint on price for buyers - ask if dealer have 2017 model. The only difference is traction control feature - and you can decide is it necessary for you or not. More on this, you could get some free items for old model (I've got full set of 3 panniers, for example).
    Small tech additions:
    - Check helmet fit. Cargo volume is 22 litres, afair, and it is possible that some helmets won't fit in. For example, mine Scorpion ADX-1 (modular, L) fit in with a lot of dancing and try'n'fit pushes. And I have to remove communication module from outside. Integral helmet should fit much easier.
    - Manual shifting is "suggestion" to DCT to shift and it could be declined (I'm not sure about pure manual mode, need to check). Nevertheless, you could perform shift from any mode - D or S.
    - There's parking brake for hill parking.

Mine has a bash plate, hand guards, Honda "crash" bar, aux lights, "pelican" hard cases & top box, DIY rear shock/reservoir protection, DIY fork guards, DIY radiator guard, modified rear seat with fuel pass through access, off road foot pegs, DIY brake pedal extender (modified TW200 footpeg), Sit & Fly seat cover, Oxford heated grips, multiple power outlets, and probably a few other things that don't come to mind. Thank you Pavlin! I ride a 2018 NC750X, manual version, and I think it is a great street bike, and a pretty good touring bike. Not so good if you like to ride very fast, and not good for off-roading either. The engine runs very smoothly, and it is indeed very fuel-efficient and low-maintenance. Another important point is the price/quality positioning of this bike by Honda. It is far less expensive than the competitors of similar sizes (at least in my market). So, if you are willing to make some compromises in terms of raw power, speed and range, it is an interesting choice.

Good job Pavlin! Some "corrections" from an owner (69000km with 700X). The revs of 5000 at 130km/h don't seem right. Maybe the DCT put you in 5th gear. Should be more like 4000. The engine does not have any heat problems. 140-150 km/h on longer distances is no problem at all if you get the right windshield for your size. This is the strength of this motorcycle! Also it is NOT expensive. The normal X version was already sold for about 6500 to 7000€, the S for 5500€. On second hand market you hardly find a bike below 3000. This bike does not lose much value and its also very reliable and economical. You are right with the maintainence which is tricky because of the plastic stuff. Its also more on the bigger side. Often the X Version is a problem for smaller riders. With a proper seat the bike should be fine.
But great and honest review which is a good advice for people who are interested in this bike.

It has delivered everything I have asked of it, and there is more it is able to give. I have added mods for travel (windscreen, rack replacing the pillion seat, new seat, and more). I camp off it all the time, and it holds everything I need. I commute to work year round (but not in snow, my own rule). Is it a "round the world" bike? Sure, with a couple more mods (suspension, dual-sport tires, bash plate). There are a couple brothers from Canada who went down to Ushualia from Vancouver. Nice review! The urban consumption is between 4 and a 4,5 l/100 km. This bike with 10-15 cvs more, and with a little a little more seat hight would be perfect for me.

Thanks a lot for this review. I bought mine 3 months ago and only did about a thousand kilos until now. I agree that the bike is not built to go off road but I did some gravel roads and if you're not in too much of a hurry it is no problem. I am 1.83 meters tall and even the seat might be a bit low it still gives a comfortable ride. The only thing that I can complain about is that with the normal fairing there is a lot of turbulence on my helmet. I ordered a taller touring screen that I should be getting soon and I am sure it will solve that problem. The plan is to do some long distance touring in the coming months. I discussed the fuel tank under the seat which also seemed as a problem to me when it comes to refueling when you have saddle bags on the bike but Honda sells cases that was specifically designed for the NC 750. So I am saving for those as well. Thanks again and keep up the good reviews.

Hi Pavlin. Thanks for all your videos, I like that you try to see the best in each bike but also hold on to things you think could be done better. Due to a "boyhood" dream mixed with economy, I started commuting to work(70km a day) on two wheels. 2years with a Honda PCX 125cc scooter then 1year with a Honda Forza 125cc. Then i finally got my motorbike license and was recommended the NC750X DCT as the perfect bike to start with. I choose the DCT because I just thought I drove so smooth. And very economical. I have it now for 6month and have done 11.000km. My consumption for all 11.000km is 4.1ltr which Im very satisfied with since I weigh 110kg/186cm tall and do all my shopping for its my only vehicle. I use my topbox and a bagpack for workclothes and shopping, so I couldn´t live without the compartment for my helmet and gloves.
Its a shame you didnt have more time on the bike for then you would have experienced some more of its good features.
You were playing with D, S and triptronic gear functions but in one trip its impossible to find the maximum use of them. For me I use D the must. And I use the down-shifting function almost everytime I need to slow down at a round-about, which also puts the engine in the right gear to continue. S works the same but is for when I wanna play with speed;-).
It also have a handbrake which I find very handy when parking on any incline.
t took me a very short time to feel at One with the NC750X DCT, making U-turns and parking at supermarkets and in town. Specially after I put the mono suspension under the saddle, on the hardest stand because of my weight. That key comes with the bike.
Im so fond of my DCT gearbox that my next bike will be an AfricanTwin DCT. No doubt. Yesterday I saw The AfricanTwin Epic Tour in Marrocco. 5 days were 75 riders crosss around in desserts and dirt roads. Half of them with DCT. So DCT off-road is just fine.
At last I will just mention that I wish the gasolin tank was bigger and the whole bike was lighter.

Fast enough, veeery economical, lots of storage, comfortabel (except the seat). My friend's bike costed almost 2.5 times mine :-). Very good bike !

I buy this motorcycle (manual version model 2017) one year ago and i`am very happy with my choice. The power of this engine is more than enugh. I dont no how the Honda engineers mange to give you such a good acceleraion only with 55hp and low RPM ! In one year i was make 21000 km without any problems, i have a lot of confidence in this bike, the longest adventure trip was 11700 km in one month (avoiding highways). In my opinion is best motorcycle for beginners except the power 0-100 below 6 seconds which i think can be tricky for a complete beginners, any way the pros: its very stable with the low center of gravity, no surprise when you hit the throttle, have linear acceleration from 3000 up to 6250 RPM, ABS , low fuel consumptiin between 3.5-4.5 depending ob speed, weight and the price for this was 6800 euro for maual version
The down side: the stock sit is a realy crap, my butt is always in pain after 1-2 hours of riding and the WEIGHT. If this bike weight was below 200kg, than this bike was the perfect bike ever...in my opinion the breaks are a little weaker on high speeds +100km, maybe is just a personal thing
Concluzion: as you sayed before, you can do adventure trip on any bike even if is not designed for long trips. The position is not confortable for 10 hours of riding if you are tall as i am but the small dimension help me a lot in trafic like Napoli, Catania, Palermo, on veary narrow roads in the mountains
I realy like your chanel, high quality info...nice job

Love your reviews! I had a Honda DCT for a about a year and had only three issues with the automatic shifting. 1) I missed the ability to use the clutch and friction zone In slow speed handling, 2) It would sometimes change to a higher gear when I would have preferred not to shift, e.g., when cornering. 3) I had to learn not to blip the throttle when stopped.

Superior in almost any way to the Honda, but of course also triple the price. I do miss the dct for relaxed cruising en that handy little storage area. Even if it was just 2 cm too small for my helmet.

It’s pretty telling that his initial impressions changed so drastically by the end. He was dogging the power (“sounds powerful, even if it’s not”), the “weird” DCT, the height, and more. One short ride later and he completely changed his tone and impression. Gotta get me one of these! I wish he’d actually taken it into some dirt, though, just to give his thoughts as a very experienced ADV rider. I mean, the title of his video would suggest that, right? With those tires, though, I understand his decision not to try.

I have the 2016 manual and the easy way to described the bike is that is a bike that do not excel at anything (maybe fuel usage) but is good at everything. I use it for commuting, touring from UK to Romania and back and I also did some off road, unpaved roads, even agricultural tracks, and is doing a fine job. Complains wind protections is crap, foot pegs are small even for road use. I think if you can afford only one bike then go for this one.

  • @jamesparker3189

What I like about the bike is the automatic because of a disabled foot and the remarkable mpg, but I do not like the bike itself. I would like to see the drive train put in a low riding cruiser type bike with a larger tank of at least four and a half gallons and a windshield that actually helps with protecting the rider from the buffeting wind. Versus having storage in the tank, have the tank as a tank and add bags for storage. The 1100 dct is a bar hopper, not a commuter bike and doesn't get the phenomenal fuel mileage of the 750x dct. Some people have claimed as much as 90 mpg. That is from a bike with a top speed of 125 miles an hour. These are feature that needs to be exploited with several different models, like with the Shadow models and Honda is failing to do so.

I have the 2017 model and the NC700X DCT of 2012. both are very economical. Without big effort, the 3,5 l/100km is possible. You should be under 4l/100km all the time with sensible driving. The DCT will shift up quickly in D-mode, so that helps a great deal. And like any good automatic, just open the throttle quickly in D-mode and it will downshift and rev to the redline. So there is no need to fiddle about when overtaking. 6th can be engaged at 62km/h and then you just rip open the throttle to have it downshift to a very low gear and use maximum revs.

I average 3.5l/100km on my manual version. Also there is actually 3 sport settings wich makes for more power and higher revs on gear changed.
You had the worse tyres on that bike which made your handeling at low speeds crappy. The Metzler Tourning Next and Pirelli Scopion Trail 2's are awesome in all conditions. I prefer the Scorpions 2 over the Metzlers for dirt roads.
I can sit confortably at 80km/h on a dirt road without feeling the need to stand. But I don't think I will be riding through the bush with it.
Did 45000km in 2 years on it of which about 5000km was on dirt.

Great for cities reducing the risk of forgetting shifting and then stalling it and thus maybe even preventing to fall over. I found it nice in general, though the engine was a big disappointment compared to what I am used to from my old Suzuki. • @PbPomper
      @PbPomper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hallvard Paulsen I'm pretty sure the NC series uses a twin engine from a Honda car. This also explains their low redline and torque curve as well as their low specific power output. This makes it a bit boring but also bulletproof reliable. I bet these things go a looooong way before they are written off.
The angle of the cilinders is also really special. Almost horizontal to the road to help with the center of gravity and make room for the trunk. I think this also has to do with the bore stroke ratio being more similar to a car. Longer stroke so less RPM/power and more torque. Power = RPM × torque

    • @chrisredfield3240
      @chrisredfield3240 6 ปีที่แล้ว

PbPomper it's true without that angle on the engine the trunk would never be possible, it should be reliable at this power output. But many bikes don't wear out making 20+ hp more than this bike. I think power wise with this bike should have been the same as the versys and v--strom at least 650's vs 750

I cant talk about the bike really becaue i ride the odler version of it, the 2012 nc700x but just as a reference for you guys, on a 64km daily commute i constantly go below the 3.5l/100km, honda mentioned. I get like something around 3.3l/100km as an average and that is with mainly inner city riding, if you go on country roads and manage to keep your throttle hand in check you can go well below 2.5l/100km which gives you plenty of range.

Dear Pavlin, thank you for this review, much sooner than I expected!
I totally agree that for more than occasional offroad use, the NC750X(D) is not very well suited. But, the Japanese didn't have this purpose in mind when they designed it.
I own a 2015 DCT, only ride on paved roads, one or multiple day rides and modified it to my liking (large screen, Hyperpro suspension, sticky street tyres and GPS controlled chain oiler) for maximum control and comfort on long haules.
I did own a heavy sport-touring bike (the FJR1300) but due to reumatic disease, I needed a lighter bike with automatic transmission. But I really love the possibility that - if I'm physically able - I have total control of the gears. I honestly did not expect that this bike was so easy to manoeuver on low speed thanks to its low CoG (balanced stop and go is easily done) and provide such fun when on the move. Twisty roads makes this bike really shine.
On the highway I usually ride at 130 km/h which makes the engine purr like a cat. My average fuel consumption is 28 kms/litre when going swift in sport mode. If I want, I go slow riding and get up to 1:40 kms/litre but then the fun is gone... I usually refuel every 300 kms or so.
    Cheers!

Because I am focused more on the adventure type of bikes. I like all type of motorcycles, but if I start to test them all there will be not time for me to travel... just the most famous models. I hope you will understand now.

The one main reason i sold it was the fuel filler under the rear seat . when loaded with bags and tent i had to unload everything when filling with petrol.

The info on the instrument panel looks a.little small .
You forgot to mention the parking brake next to the left hand grip.
But overall this was an excellent review!
    Thank you.

I had first NC700X. Loved it, but wanted more offroad capable bike, so I bought new Twin. But NC was wonderful city commuter, loved the "frunk". And I got 2,9km/100km once. Usually it was around 3-3,2. So yeah, economical, very.

Easy to do what, oil change? What about the valves clearance or DCT oil change?

    • @Motowanderlust
      @Motowanderlust 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes and oil change is so easy, for the DCT you don't have to change anything except the DCT oil filter ( 5 min job ). Valve clearance is easier because of the engine position, even the change of spark plugs are 10 min job.

Nice review, thanks. Just a couple of notes; if it has similar function to the Goldwing DCT, the manual shift paddles work without having to use the manual mode button. If you override automatic mode by using the shift paddles, the transmission will revert to automatic after you stop using the paddles for a certain period of time. I have heard that though you hear the shifts, they are smooth, and you do not feel them at all. Second point, the turn indicators on the Goldwing are self canceling, based on a timer. If this bike has the same functionality, the turn signals cancel after about 7 or 10 seconds. I would imagine that the timer only activates when you are moving.
Can you please review the Kawasaki KLR 650? Yes, it is an old design, but very popular, and though there are many reviews on TH-cam, I would highly value your views.
    Ciao.

      @motorcycleadventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

This DCT is work exactly the same way. The indicators are not self cancelling. I review new bikes from the shop. Where to find KLR for test ride?

    • @overboost7667

Sadly, the turn signals don't cancel automatically, they work just as standard.

There are many ways to secure one’s helmet to the sub frame. There is no need to gobble up space better used for extra clothing etc

Again, thank you Palvin for testing these bikes. I know that you will be having as much fun as my interest in watching. At the moment I have a Kawasaki kvf360 which I use most days for work and ride about 6 to 8 hours at a time. It is automatic and fun and has massive foot plates for easy standing. My question is this, how do you think that this bike would be if you made some adjustments and took it off road and had to stand for some time? I mean if you used the finger gear change rather than the automatic settings? Of course the stock set up is for road use, a little bit like the xt660x.

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

This is road bike. You can make a lot of changes, but at the end it will be road bike with some changes - I hope that you will get the idea.

Automatic gear (DCT) Honda motorbike is for me absolutely the best thing that was made in motorcycles. You have ridden DCT so you do not know that in this Honda NC750X man have to change gears very often. This is very unusual engine not typical for motorcycles. It is very low rpm engine and it cuts-off at 6500 rpm. Due to that DCT gear box is almost necessary. Travel speed about 150-160 km/h can be for sure no problem.

Just try manual gear version. You will be surprised. Anyway it is very good motorcycle and this trunk instead of fuel tank is awesome. But it is, what i call, 1,5 person bike.

Hi pavlin I rode a aprilia mana in 2008 ..same set up as honda the only minus was on coming down hill and you roll off throttle it sort off goes out of gear but re adjust and use brakes more...otherwise it's brilliant cheers good stuff as usual from dave

Honda is different, the DCT allows you to use engine braking coming down a hill by selecting a low gear. The Mana uses CVT like a scooter which means it feels like freewheeling and you have to use brakes to take speed off.

The NC 750 X A sold in Australia only has a manual box, no DCT. Australia is the world's dumping ground for old automotive technologies. When the auto companies have exhausted their dumping in Australia, they move on to dumping in developing countries.

Thanks for the review. You mention the cruising speed is 120 KPH. That's about 65MPH right? The low torque is great, but for a typical rider, we want to be able to rev it out a bit. Having a motor that drives like a diesel engine is not good. I bought the 500x which has the traditional high rev engine. And that has a better power to weight ratio than the 750X. Faster when you need to quickly accelerate out of danger.

Everybody is different, I prefer quit engine.

    • @mrfechu6281

I do cruising speed of 150-160 KPH, easy, and I am a big guy. I don't need any more than that. I reached 190, but I don't feel comfortable at that speeds. Once you learn how to ride it, you don't need more revs. CB500X was my first option, I tried it, but a few minutes later I tried the NC, I changed my mind after just 1 Km. NC is in a diferent league.

    • @WildBikerBill

120 mph is closer to 75 mph, and if you manage the throttle right it has plenty of power. I have the NZ 700 and I have had at over 90mph without problem.

yes, this bike is very capable even off-road with very good, low down torque engine. I did over 40k km, also in Morocco but no DCT, forget about DCT, unless you want to ride scooter.
