  • Driving At Night - Part 1. In this video: The different light positions on the switch and on the dashboard and what they do, using reflections on the parked vehicles and on the asphalt, barely visible road users, fatigue and alcohol, and what to do before and after leaving the car when you’ve parked.

Note: Something that seems to be causing some confusion with some people, when I say that the daytime running lights are sometimes also called fog lights, what I mean is, that's what people call them sometimes, because they use them for that purpose. The switch for the real fog lights is a different switch, and it's not available on all vehicles. The fog lights are a different set of lights and they're usually located on the front bumper.
Note2: While I try to make my videos as universal as possible, rules and laws may vary according to the place where you’re driving and might be different from the ones in this video. Always drive according to the laws and rules that apply to the place where you are driving. Requirements at the driving exam may also be different than the ones shown here. Always respect the requirements that apply to the place where you are passing your driving exam. The distances illustrated in this video might vary depending on the driver’s height, the size and type of the vehicle and so on. This video is not legal advice, and is not meant to replace your official driving courses. By doing anything presented in this video, you assume full responsibility for anything that may happen.

Yeah it's because the icons for both the daytime running lights and the normal lights are the same, whereas the high beams icon is the only differentiating icon to know when they're on. And trust me, I also made that mistake as well~ Fortunately, my car now doesn't have an off position, but instead always defaults to automatic, where there's a sensor near the windshield of my car so that it knows when to turn on the lights depending on the amount of ambient light outside.

    • @MicroSD16Gb
      @MicroSD16Gb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@sanilmaharjan5227 there are two lights, daytime running lights are sometimes just small lights in front or it will be high beams but half dimmed, so basically driving like this you cant see the road, you blinding drivers ahead and on the opposite side and nobody can see you from behind. Also there is a ticket for driving like this most states is between 60-100$ and ontario was 80$ last time i checked. regural lights, ie low beam is pointing on the road instead of other drivers so you can see the road and people can see you. Last thing if on a very dark road you driving with daytime lights only and you get rear ended by someone with a dashcam then by most insurrance companies you will be found at fault not 50% but 100%, so make sure to drive with low beam at night, not daytime running lights

I’ve had to drive at night and I could barely see the road! I could only see when I turned the switch to regular lights, but I thought those were the high beams. I’m sure a lot of people make this mistake, because the symbols look alike for high beams and regular. And I did read my manual, but I still couldn’t figure it out. Glad I found this video!

Slight correction about the high beams. As a standard practice, pushing and pulling on the turn signal lever will both light the high beams. However, pulling the lever toward you will activate them only momentarily, for when you may need to check some information and then deactivate them to avoid creating a nuisance or because you simply no longer need them because you've identified whatever it was you needed to cast light on. Pushing the lever forward will turn the lights on by toggling them, and they will remain on until you manually pull the lever back to the neutral position.

I believe I had my high beems on (it was snow/rain mixed and at night), but there are 3 levels, 2 of which don't feel like anything happens when I rotate the knob. Then high beams after pushing the lever.

0:37 be careful, this is not accurate. "Fog lights" are something different. They are as they sound; lights specifically for use in fog. Theyre needed because in fog, regular headlights just light up the fog and make visibility worse. So fog lights are pointed even more downward than regular headlights to only illuminate the road. The lights he's referring to are often called "Parking lights" (even though theyre usually used even when you arent parked)

Since my driving practices for my driving school were at night, I got used to driving at night so when I started driving during the day at first I felt weird but I guess that’s how people feel when they’re used to driving at a certain time.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m buying my first car soon and I don’t know anyone who drives. Since I live in a big city. Salesman are pushy and focuses on the sake. So getting a lesson on these small aspects of owning and driving are so valuable. Love all of your videos.

I'll do a video on tips for buying a used car this summer. I strongly recommend you buy a used car as your first car, unless money's not an issue. There are lots of things to be aware of when buying a used vehicle besides the obvious stuff.

4:45, I highly disagree, if you are extremely fatigued and not able to find a "safe" place to park your car and take a quick nap. Just do it and take the lowered risk option (sure, a cop may or may not give you a ticket), rather than keep driving half awake until you find a "safe" place to park.

@Back Woods well you aren't a good Christian if you are trying to impart your religion upon others. Anyone can follow their own religion. I have no hate towards any religion, but you shouldn't say that one religion is superior to the other.

    For me:
Daytime, bright and sunny - Off
Daytime but cloudy, or twilight - Parking lights.
When it's dark enough that the'll make a difference - Headlights.
I don't see the sense in running headlights when it's too bright for them to make a difference.
Parking lights are more than enough to make your car noticable. Running headlights during this time just makes more glare for other road users, and reflects up off the rainy road into other drivers eyes.
In the UK, people are going through an obsession of driving with headlights on at the slightest sign of a cloud in the sky, and it's very annoying.
Kind of like the 2010s obsession of driving with front fog lights on, which was also pretty stupid.
