Grazie Gastone!
All credit to Vittorio Gui for the most subtle and nuanced conducting of this rarely heard, unusual, groundbreaking 1848 Verdi masterpiece. Also perfect performances by all the soloists, and splendid choral work. Gencer's handling of the difficult cadenzas are perfection. A valuable lesson: there is no need to shout, bleat, whine, throb, or over-emphasize to put across Verdi's subtle musical dramas. Just listen: it's music. There's a glitch in the orchestral lead-in to Act III at 57:30.
Good performance and Gencer is wonderful, but Corelli and Bastianni give a later version the visceral excitement that this one lacks. Without a single hit, this opera needs all the help it can get.

Grazie mille!
Opera companies need to step up and include this Opera in their standard repertory. Forget about 20th century American "composers." Viva Verdi.
