- The Ontario Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf (ORAD) proudly presents "True Colours" in American Sign Language. A song originally performed by Cyndi Lauper, then re-recorded by a group of seven Canadian musicians, "Artists Against Bullying." This video premiered at ORAD's 5th annual "Drag'ing ASL to Pride" on June 2nd, 2013 as part of an Anti-Bullying Campaign for Deaf Queer Youth.

My son who is partially deaf, burst into happy tears when he watched this. .. thank you so much for giving him that joy...
even now in 2016, this is one, if not my most fave videos on youtube. I watch it at least once a week. I am a captioning assistant in a tty center and this video now hits a little harder than it did before.

This was beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! I love that it looks like there wasn't a standard gloss given to everyone to sign. Everyone signed what the song meant to them and that shows the many different ways that the same concept can be interpreted into ASL. Wow, breathtakingly gorgeous! Thank you for sharing. :)
I'm nine years old and I quit public school because I got anxiety attacks because I was always bullied and I cried every morning and this song helped me make through the day and I love this song so keep up the good work!

Thank you for uploading this video! I am learning ASL for two reasons: 1) because there need to be more translators in the healthcare field, and because I want to be a midwife, I should learn and bring the midwife-assisted birth experience to Deaf and Hard of Hearing mothers and fathers who wish to have this service.... and 2) because my oldest son is hard of hearing and will likely have degenerative hearing loss as he ages... I want to learn with him :-) the easiest way for me to learn is through repetition and association (in this case, song) and not relying on translations via writing or speaking. These videos help with this.
Also, this song is beautiful... and so are you.

I watched this last night and I had to try so hard to NOT cry. Too many people get bullied. And for deaf people who are one of the bullies targets to make this it lets the bullies know that you won't be a coward and run, you are amazing and you know it.

This is an effort to inspire Deaf youth and others to uplift instead of tear down. Imagine being Deaf/Hoh/Late Deafened. The suicide rate from bullying is already high, too high! When the only people that you communicate with and are able to talk to is so small. There is absolutely no reason to hate or criticize this effort. There’s no reason to change or gloss this. These are artists, as such, no-one signs renditions that are done in strict dictionary glosses in English, it it through interpretation of song and verse. Think of it like Usher, Madonna, opera, linguistic freedom to use words in novel ways. Dictionary’s are just that, and no person speaks like a dictionary. There are for example 72 ways to say the f word in English. ASL and CSL have only documented a few 10s of thousands of words. No one can follow an individual around 24/7 and video and document their language use, draw pictures of a moving language.
Dictionaries are made for non fluent users, fluent users are way past that.
Word for word translations, are not interpretations, it strips the original, of all that it means. Intonation, color, humor, cultural reference, double entendres
Can’t be represented in translations.
There are no words that can express what they have done in this video other than love, they are saving lives, uncrushing humans tore down by haters, like the ones who hated this video.

I watched the "premiere" of this video on June 2nd, at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, here in Toronto, for the "DRAG'ing ASL To Pride" Event. I got to meet a few of the performers in the video. Absolutely amazing video to a beautiful song. I hope to meet up with them again.

This video is amazing! It gave me chills.. I work with kids, young adults, and adults with mental disabilities and/or disabled... Most of them know ASL and it got me really interested! I want to learn more! Its just amazing!! I really want to communicate with my patients so I understand how they feel :) UGH! This video just made me tear up.. Its so uplifting and heartwarming!
