Many years ago, I found a sheet of black paper lying in the recycle bin in my office. It had a rip in the middle and was showing the white under surface. This gave me the idea to draw around the ripped portion of the paper. To my surprise, I discovered that the top surface of the paper was etchbale. I etched a bird’s eye view of the kayaker rowing his kayak on the black paper. The rip became part of the wake in the water. It was the most fun I’ve ever had drawing on any kind of paper.

Another great video, Matthew, thank you. Just starting to get into white charcoal on black paper. It takes a little while to get your head to think in reverse, but it’s a lot of fun. Very satisfying.

Honestly, graphite looks really cool and shiny on black paper. If u use different hard and soft pencils it can give interesting results.

Hm, I actually have an unopened block of black paper lying around. This might be just the encouragement I need to give it a go!

I have a black mixed media pad. Did a colored pencil drawing. I had a lot of trouble getting enough opaqueness. Have ordered the Strathmore Artgain black paper for colored pencil. So glad after seeing your video that I made the right choice.

I just received a pad of black Strathmore mixed media paper. You didn't mention that one, but I think it will be a good one to get started with. Thanks for the great information!

Hmmm, my value chart shows only 10 shades of grade. Of course, it is really in percentages, so I guess there are a hundred shades?😜

I’m working on subject with colored pencils (Faber Castle) on a black paper. But I’m not getting the results I want. I’m drawing a skull with a light bulb inside it and a dark background. I can’t get high value yellows and whites for the light effect. I think the black from the paper keeps showing through. Any advice?

Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) is just chalk. The blackboard stuff. Though not all modern blackboard chalk is make from calcium carbonate.
