80% of Nairobians live in informal settlements, like Kibra and Mukuru: the flats they are talking about are not meant to ease slum dwelling: the flats(Including affordable housing) are owned by wadosi to be sold to people working in Qatar and such places. Nairobi will be unlivable in a couple years because most people are lucky to get water once a week, the sewage system has not been expanded for 60 years , road networks and car parking spaces are insufficient, and formalized garbage collection is non existent.

Nairobi doesn't even have a spatial master plan, it doesn't even state which areas are industrial/residential/commercial/mixed use.
We just have knee-jerk reactions, the Embasaki gas explosion occurred in an area that was once classified as a light-industrial area, the fact that the county allowed people to build homes in that area doesn't legally re-classify the area as residential. We then rush to close bars in estates yet most of the bars were built in reserved for commercial purposes within residential areas. The fact that those areas have houses doesn't mean the bars are illegal.
All the county does is collect revenue for approval of building plans.

    • @georgeodhiambo598

@@michaelotieno6524 Nairobi has a spatial plan and different areas are clearly set out differently for different kinds of development. The challenge of an African is to stick to a plan. Residential buildings are approved in industrial area zones. High rise apartments are approved in zones for single dwelling houses. Corruption, laxity, etc.

Funny governor. He has no sense of quality long-term development. Does Sakaja know what sustainable development is? Sakaja needs to go back to school, the governor must be educated about what town planning is all about. A Nairobi resident needs to be able to walk on foot, or by bicycle safely from dagoreti, dondora, Eastleigh, kilimani, Livingston, buruburu, donholm, from all parts of Nairobi to the other, to town without impediment from vehicular traffic! Nairobi needs free open green spaces. Our connectivity must favour pedestrians not vehicles, quality of living is key what is the point of having high-rise high risk building which prevents free flow of air, sunlight reaching houses increasing lung disease, infections etc in the name of development? Nairobi has the wrong person for the job of governor, clueless. Not every space must be built with high rise development, let development orooer planned development go to the outcast of the city or Nairobi will develop into a dead city.

Building up is not sustainable, but building out of the city is the best long-term solution for the next 50 to 100 years. There's no sewage treatment plant being built that can handle 10 million people! They need to plant more trees and have green open spaces that will absorb all the toxic carbon emissions from the massive traffic jams. The plan should be to decongest the city NOT add more congestion and traffic!
