Hero's Downfall: CGB resisted the mono-white's curse with all his strength. But after a lifetime of fighting monsters, he was doomed to become one himself.
Hey CGB, Medvedev is actually a somewhat famous figure in Russian-speaking MTG communities. He makes a regular "MTG digest" in Russian where he condenses all the main events across all formats, brings up interesting articles about decks, mtg finance, MTG trivia etc. And he plays quite well, too!
Now your training is complete! Rule the Arena as a true Sith Lord! Nice update to low to the ground white. They have so many options and you have been on that blue control grind lately that it's nice to see something new.
Man I've played mono green, I've played lifegain, I've played an izzet control deck, And after watching this video I gave in and made a bootleg version of mono white and it just curb stomps everything, I wouldn't even mind running into a black control and getting destroyed, because you litterally do not struggle with mono white. You either win somewhere between turn 4-7 or I guess you die. Games with any other meta deck are a struggle but this is just brainlessness. Like I just won 10 games straight in ranked, litterally has never happened to me before.
If you want to play against monowhite, you play monowhite. If you play monoblack, the matchmaking algorythm will make you play against creaturless dimir/azorius/esper control, obviously.
Btw at 49:45, I would generally recommend playing the land post combat, since if they Fading Hope your Haven, you can replay it that same turn and swing with it the next turn instead of having to wait 2 turns before being able to swing with it Edit: Cuz really the only reason you'd play the land pre-combat is to boast the Usher during combat if you expect them to trade with your Haven, but I just don't think the boast is worth the risk of not having a Haven open the next turn
Your statement about Mono-W being the best spot to be in if you're trying to run semi-budget decks is so accurate. I'm relatively new to Arena (been playing it since around May), and I haven't spent any money on the game, but I found Mono-W really easy to build. I started with this cheap double spell deck full of commons and uncommons, and as I crafted and collected better rares, I added them to the deck until I eventually shifted entirely away from double spelling and became a much more standard Mono-W deck. But yeah, it's just so easy to build a cheap Mono-W deck as you slowly collect the cards you want.
As a fan that has watched almost every day since the beta ended, I want to share some of my thoughts about the intro. I really am not a fan of the spoilers in the intro. It takes the suspense out of some of the games and sometimes makes me want to stop watching before the games even begin. I would much rather go back to what worked for so many years, which is to discuss the changes to the deck and matchups in the post game wrap. Either way I appreciate you CGB!
In double spell white I been using ollenbach escort, homestead courage, and welcoming vampire to lean in the double spelling. Also experimenting Shalle dean of rad to lean into the counters on things to protect. I did have to cut a lot of the removal three drops but it lets me run 21 lands. The escort has been pretty key since people don’t read the cards. Lots of trading a one drop for their removal spells
I'm fine, quite frankly, happy with the new direction. Sure, brews are cool, but I also want something that wins. Playing variations and/or adding a twist to existing meta decks is what I'm interested in. Meta is there for reason, and unless we're about to suggest that our new deck beats the meta, we really aren't establishing that this is a deck that "works" in the current state of the game. That being said, I wish MTGA had a queue that was for jank/brew decks only.
Hi CGB! I enjoyed the video and stayed to the end. The plan you're talking about, with checking out variations on decks and how they tune the deck for different situations, sounds really interesting to me! I'd love to see games like that with some analysis discussion, as that is something I am not good at and would love to learn more about.
Cheers for the video, the rant in the end = 100% relatable. I get it, and I understand why you’re planning to focus on meta-deck refinement for a while.
I totally agree! This isn’t the type of magic I like to play but for a person who doesn’t have much time to play it’s just efficient. And if I ever want to be able to afford the kinds of decks I like to play I need to win a lot
Another entertaining video. Sometimes one has to just take what others inspire and make them work with only a few personal modifications. Because of this, I was able to hit mythic rank for the very first time since I tried arena beta. Thank you CGB.
Dude, you have to do what you can not to burn out; I always enjoy content that analyzes and dissects why X is better than Y. Thanks for the content, and hope you're having fun in the arena!
One thing I havent seen you try out this set is Werewolves. Now I know they obviously still suck but it would be interesting to see what you can come up with and explain why Werewolves suck and if there is any chance they could get better with more sets even if it just becomes a generic midrange deck.
I think the problem is that there isn't room for a creature based tempo deck. traditionally tempo is there to beat aggro, but when both top tier aggro decks are heavily anti-creature, tempo can't win. So it sits there outside the paper-rock-scissors meta with nothing it is best against. When I play my werewolves deck, I find it does best against control because of the day-night mechanic, but it is not nearly strong enough to consistently beat the top izzet decks, so it is still beaten down.
I'm honestly the same way. I want to play so many other decks, but I want to win more. So, I'm stuck playing mono-white because, not only do I not have the cards for any of the other 2 top tier decks, but nothing else comes close to the raw power of mono-white. Other than money, I have no idea why Wizards continues to support this meta...
Hey man love your videos my sister is in the hospital she just got heart surgery and she loves watching your vids with me it really makes her day for that I am grateful keep up the vids and also keep up the NONSENSE lol
It physically hurt me to watch that monowhite mirror where the Frost Dragon took over the game, the opponent made so many terrible decisions... I cringed every turn. As a footnote, thanks CGB for promoting this kind of deck, mi Esper control deck really appreciates it :D
I’ve always enjoyed your content for either playing the best decks or buy creating ones that beat them. You usually find a way just it’s tough in BO1 when the two best decks are polar opposites. Having to rely on matching making is a tough one (which is why I usually play bo3). Keep up the great work. Been enjoy your videos even more so as am in isolation (first 5 days done, 5 more to go!)
the talk about mono white and izzit makes me recall the mono red meta with embercleave meta. I dont remember what the Izzit deck would have been back then...
If you want a fresh deck, that at least has a 50:50 chance against MonoWhite and Izzet, I have one for you. Played over 250 games with it and modified it over the last weeks. Right now 65% on the play 50% on the draw. But in this percentages are also many games against casual brews. So the real, competative win percentage might be slightly different. Give me a sign if you like to have look.
I honestly would love for you to go over the meta decks and their variants. I also wouldn’t mind hearing how it changes a deck and the different things that the cards offer the archetype they find a home in.
Once again, thanks for the daily uploads. Love the content! Also I highly recommend thinking about abzan token control. You can still have enough snow for blood on the snow if you restrict your white cards to Kaya and maybe Edgar.
re: Standard Challenges on Arena: Didn't they just have one last weekend or so? Not long after VOW released. They tend to do Standard Challenges a couple of weeks after the drop of a new set and Historic Challenges a couple of weeks after a big infusion into the Historic metagame (usually after the release of a Remastered set but I think I recall seeing one after an Anthology drop too).

Mono-White makes me sad because it's the exact kind of deck I really like, I like getting a bunch of weenies and buffing them to smack my opponent with and that is something that White is very good at in particular But it feels like the average Mono-White Aggro deck has *so many* Rares in it that it becomes difficult to get that one going whether it's in MTG Arena or the actual physical card game without ponying up a lot of stuff up front for it. Don't suppose there's a "budget" option available is there?
On paper it's under $140, and yeah it sucks for Arena. I haven't played Arena since Zendikar Rising Prerelease, so I have next to NO cards on Arena for the new standard
Very strange to not include any Elite Spellbinders, arguably the best white three drop against control. The original list had 3 in the side board. If you only play bo1, surely you want 2 or 3 in the main deck.
Probably because the mirror is far more common than control decks and Cathar is a lot better into Monogreen while Adeline can ramp up and survive much easier into Izzet
Watching someone with CGB’s level of knowledge about this game play this deck is comparable to Steven Hawking going “Okay class, now remember A is for Ape, B is for Boat…”
Just tried this list and played the mirror nine consecutive times on the draw in every single one. One and eight record with the opponent having the exact right card for every situation. Days like this frustrate me.
That's why I can't play this deck, you resumed my experience with mtga. + No cinderclasm and no Monoblack for CGB ? Honestly ? I'll add that he drew so many Brutal Catar. There is so many games where I can't find one of my 10 Brutal, nor Skyclave, nor Portable Hole. I need the taxes all along, and the removals... Because the Hook and Blood in the snow are 90% in my opponent's main hand. I'm in his state of meta, I'll probably give it a shot, but 100% it will ends like you'
The epic grind that you’ve been on is inspiring dude. It’s been cool to see your content evolve since I started watching over a year ago. Have a good one!
Honestly man, some days in the Arena are unbearable because of izzet and mono-white. It isn't even the power level, it's about the amount of times you have to play them in a given session. I'll jump to the play queue sometimes to try and get some variety and end up facing them anyway. I feel your pain, and thanks for the content dude. You're cool!
White used to be my favorite color in MTG. Like, here is this underdog weak color with a bunch of weak humans. Only with the power of teamwork and invoking the divine are weak humans were able to prevail. Now white is indistinguishable from other colors. Almost every human is a powerhouse that can accomplish everything on it's own.
I also played nonstop blue decks before I spent my wild cards on this and got nothing but Lolth and Lifegain decks. On the other hand, one drop-two drop-Adeline has become my daily grinder in Brawl. So many turn 4 wins and even when she dies she's still worth 5 mana easy.
Mono white and mono green are my favorite decks to beat right now with my boros counters deck. The only creature heavy deck that gives me the fear is clerics.
...do I like for the CGB, or do I dislike for the mono-white.....I think it sits at a solid "nothing". Jokes aside, I appreciate that you go out of your way to play the deck and see what its strengths and weaknesses are. Understanding the [bs] you have to play against is important too.
I've been brewing to try and find something that beats Fading Hope and Divide By Zero. One thing that's worked is Lurrus vampires. Cheap aggro with a decent amount of reach with 4 Vampire's Kiss. ... this deck looks better in every way. Not even close.
Keep up the fight! We need your skills and your salt! I'm doing good against izzet with blue white tempo but this mono white has destroyed me the last few days. There's gotta be something we can do!
I really preferred embercleave at 4th turn. Was more acceptable. And had worked faster. BTW, is nasty when I moved from mono black control to - I always received second turn Izet deck.
Sentinel seems super strong in the two drop because she exiles from the yard to mess up those Lier decks, but i suppose the idea of this list is to just have them dead before Lier even hits the battlefield
Mono white is why epiphany needs to be banned, in a weird irony. It's such an incredible deck because trying to plan against it means you are automatically building a deck specifically weak to epiphany, but it and green are the only decks fairly good against epiphany. I'd love to see a meta where people don't have that struggle, and everybody's silly lifegain jank actually works. Still, an awesome video as always and it's nice to see one of the big villains in the meta laid out bare for us to see.
I play my Mono Green Ramp into Festival Deck. It is fun.. unless it's against Mono White Aggro or Izzet. Surely, other Decks also sometimes play me like a fiddle, but at least they are not so overwhelmingly common
Know thy enemy
🤮😘
Why no time stamps on your videos?
This version definitely seems to invite iterations of Blood Money to be successful.
all hail mono white
Hello, can you please show how to play land fall deck?
Hero's Downfall: CGB resisted the mono-white's curse with all his strength. But after a lifetime of fighting monsters, he was doomed to become one himself.
Lol
He just did this so he can build decks to rip it apart more like mono black control. LOL big brain vids
He was also president while Putin was prime minister for a change. How cool is that!
Now your training is complete! Rule the Arena as a true Sith Lord! Nice update to low to the ground white. They have so many options and you have been on that blue control grind lately that it's nice to see something new.
You were supposed to destroy the mono white, not join them!
As a black control player please encourage more people to play this archtype
Amen brother
My Golgari deck agrees wholeheartedly. Especially this version with no Spellbinders
Amen I play bw and it feels so nice when I see mono white on the other side
Man I've played mono green, I've played lifegain, I've played an izzet control deck,
And after watching this video I gave in and made a bootleg version of mono white and it just curb stomps everything, I wouldn't even mind running into a black control and getting destroyed, because you litterally do not struggle with mono white. This deck remains the most color coordinated and imo aesthetically appealing. The dark teals and golds go so well together.
Your statement about Mono-W being the best spot to be in if you're trying to run semi-budget decks is so accurate. Thanks CGB! Currently taking a hiatus from the game but I still love your content. Keep doing what you do! Hope you have a good holiday season!
That intro. As soon as I saw the thumb the star wars quote did come to mind

Thanks for doing this! Needed to see it.
I love these fast builds to rank up, thanks and keep up the good work.
28:00 Why did he not double-block the Cave with Moonrage and Raptor?
When are we going to get a good bant deck?
Medvedev going from tennis champion to magic champion lol
full circle moment, there people going wide which lead to more boardwipes, boardwipes lead to more control, more control leads to you going wide
Dude, you have to do what you can not to burn out; I always enjoy content that analyzes and dissects why X is better than Y.
Thanks for the content, and hope you're having fun in the arena!
how does one actually access the side-board in MTGA? i'm not seeing the button?
Didn't want to make a comment before it was over, but congrats on those wolverines, go blue!
Oh yeah, and the beatdown on arena was pretty nice too.
Waiting on this to be pinned ❤😊

The end rant makes sense and playing strong decks is more interesting to watch. Will keep watching even without your own brews.
Woot!
Edit: Balon freaking Greyjoy reference, CGB you are freaking awesome.
the talk about mono white and izzit makes me recall the mono red meta with embercleave meta. I dont remember what the Izzit deck would have been back then...
where is the flowers planeswalker. He goes well with the monks. better than legion angel?
I have been having some good success with the 2/3 vampire that gives you card draw when you play a weenie.
Pretty slow, no?
@@L_Jefe Maybe, I think the trade off is that if you are running monk or clarion she can help you double spell better mid to late game.
CGB playing mono white!
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer!
re: Standard Challenges on Arena: Didn't they just have one last weekend or so? Not long after VOW released. They tend to do Standard Challenges a couple of weeks after the drop of a new set and Historic Challenges a couple of weeks after a big infusion into the Historic metagame (usually after the release of a Remastered set but I think I recall seeing one after an Anthology drop too).
I hate to be that guy but you could have attacked with Hopeful Initiate at 17:00 and training would have made it a 4/5 beating Florian's first strike and put on more pressure. I have to admit I wouldn't have noticed without help from your videos, thank you🙏.
Have you thought of using Strict Proctor?
Mono-White makes me sad because it's the exact kind of deck I really like, I like getting a bunch of weenies and buffing them to smack my opponent with and that is something that White is very good at in particular

U can budget monowhite u just have to play weaker things like codes codespell cleric and the hawk with firststrike
On paper it's under $140, and yeah it sucks for Arena. I haven't played Arena since Zendikar Rising Prerelease, so I have next to NO cards on Arena for the new standard

Thanks a bunch CGB - now every single deck on ladder is this mono white pile.
15:29 100% accurate
I’m going to be clear. I enjoy Izzet; I enjoy mono red, and mono white. But there’s something satisfying about seeing those decks destroyed
“You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain”
CGB and mono white. Best combo!

You had me at mono white.

How is it you barely played vs. the mirror? I play this and I play vs. the mirror around 80% of the time, give or take 5%.
Mono white and mono green are my favorite decks to beat right now with my boros counters deck. The only creature heavy deck that gives me the fear is clerics.
Paladin class’ third ability has saved my ass so many times. But the extra tax from Redaine also helps.
Azorius delver?

Good video as always CGB. Honestly wouldnt mind seeing a bit of brawl or something again if you get bored of this standard.

I just made it to mythic for the first time, by running scurry oak in historic. I find it quite satisifying.

I've been brewing to try and find something that beats Fading Hope and Divide By Zero.
One thing that's worked is Lurrus vampires. Cheap aggro with a decent amount of reach with 4 Vampire's Kiss.
... this deck looks better in every way. Not even close.
Net Decks + Meta Busters sounds interesting!
Since Michigan won yesterday, does this mean we can look forward to an evil white deck every year for the Big Game
The irony that mono white replaced mono red after rotation :P
Sentinel seems super strong in the two drop because she exiles from the yard to mess up those Lier decks, but i suppose the idea of this list is to just have them dead before Lier even hits the battlefield
the real evil cgb plays mono w
This deck single handedly forced me to finally take a break from magic. My wallet and mental health haven't been this good in over a year.
Literally. Same.
CGB has joined the dark side
Mono white is why epiphany needs to be banned, in a weird irony. It's such an incredible deck because trying to plan against it means you are automatically building a deck specifically weak to epiphany, but it and green are the only decks fairly good against epiphany. I'd love to see a meta where people don't have that struggle, and everybody's silly lifegain jank actually works. Still, an awesome video as always and it's nice to see one of the big villains in the meta laid out bare for us to see.
Epiphany is not the problem anymore. Banning it won't fix the meta
I play my Mono Green Ramp into Festival Deck. It is fun.. unless it's against Mono White Aggro or Izzet.
Surely, other Decks also sometimes play me like a fiddle, but at least they are not so overwhelmingly common
Anyone else here during the hiatus? I shouldn't miss a youtuber this much lol
i’m getting mopped with this setup i feel like mythic is untouchable this month for me :(
