    If you don't actually use your knives............Go ahead and oil your micarta. The fact the oil makes the micarta very slippery will make no difference to you.........Since you are not ever going to use your knife for anything but looking at it. The design of micarta is that it gets more grippy when wet. If you apply oil to the scales, they will not become more grippy when they get wet from water, sweat or blood. So if you want to ruin the functional working grip aspect of your micarta...........Go ahead and oil your micarta and slice your fingers off when they slip off the handle. To remove any oil from the scales....... you can wash them with Dawn dish soap and warm water using a soft bristle brush. Let them air dry overnight and then rub them with your dry hands. The slight amount of natural oils in your hand will bring the color back to the micarta without making them so dangerously slippery. I have gone so far as to apply a very slight amount (just a drop or two) of FOOD GRADE MINERAL OIL using a microfiber polymer towel. Apply only a drop or two of oil on your hand, then wipe your hands with the towel. That will disperse very little ( but enough to do the job) oil onto the towel. Wash and dry your hands. Now wipe the knife handle with the oiled towel. It will apply just enough oil to bring out the color of micarta without over oiling them so much as to cause grip slip.

    I had to wash a micarta handle that got mouldy. I had to use a bleach based mould killing spray, when I dried it , looked so pale I thought I’d ruined it 😳!
    While watching your video I’ve held it and worked it about in my hand nervously and in 9:17 minutes things are better. I’ll be trying mineral oil now. Thanks for the advice.

    With the lionsteel micarta - it has a slightly finer weave, and it is finished to a higher grit and then buffed. No finish on them, but micarta goes glassy when polished up (treat it as resin if you want to give polishing a go, and take your time on each grit - you are trying to not only sand the resin part glossy but cut off the lifted fibers and fuzz sanding has raised from the fabric portion of the micarta)

    I have a brand new tops jim brown tracker I've had for about 14 yrs I never used it it was too pretty !
    The other I noticed the handles were jet black ! I mean black so I did alot of reading and compared it to my new tops knives which are bright grey!
    But claim to be black micarta after much reading and checking I did find the rements of the handles had some grey areas left near the blade
    I realized after yrs of cleaning my knife I would place then in a bag I keep them in and spray w d40 on them !!!
    That's when I realized how the micarta got black and it's really jet black! Looks great just I keep reading black micarta and seeing bright green ish grey!
    After much research the trick is oil!!! And it will turn jet black! Not polished but still I realy like it lol ture story

    Nice, I used some food oil on one of my micarta scales. It made them look beautiful. I don’t know about mineral oil, but food safe kinda sinks in and I had to apply it three or four more times in two months.

    I don't have a tops knife yet but I do have that type of micarta. My scales seem like they get tacky. I'm not sure if I'm over oiling or if I just need to clean them or what but I can't get a clear answer. On a side note I just oil my scales because it makes them more uniform and I have exposed tang handles so I do often oil the tang and it very hard to avoid getting oil on the micarta so I just do the scales to avoid the oil splotches.

    • @theedcden5515
      @theedcden5515  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they are tacky, they might need to be cleaned. Warm water and soap should do the trick. Once they dry you can apply an even coat of oil 👍🤙

      @@theedcden5515 I love TOPS knife designs but they ruin their micarta handles and leather sheaths by applying TOO MUCH OIL to the sheath when it is shipped. If a TOPS knife ships with a leather sheath................. I will not but it from TOPS.

    I got a Boker a few days back and the micarta that supposed to be dark green has a white surface that's rough. Should I sand this, or just use oil like in this video? The pictures of my knife show deep dark green and zero white surface. Mine came looking almost unfinished.
