  • Nicrosaurus was a large predator from the Triassic Period, a time when dinosaurs were just beginning to evolve. It was a phytosaur, a type of reptile with a superficially crocodile-like appearance. Unlike the other phytosaurs, Nicrosaurus did not live like modern crocodilians, but waseither primarily or fully terrestrial.
    Thank you to the themattalorian for narrating this video.

    Land crocs are inevitable, even when its not an actual croc.

      Crocs in general seem to be inevitable, even when they're not actual crocs.
      You could say that crocs uhh, find a way.

    Not only Phytosaur archosaurs evolved convergently to crocodilians but there is some indication that they practised parental care similar to crocodilians as well! I wonder why such a uniquely successful species went extinct suddenly at the end of triassic

    Pretty cool 😎. Wonder if there is a prehistoric terrestrial Croc that is as big as a tyrannosaur or allosaurus

    • @chimerasuchus
      @chimerasuchus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Cenozoic sebecid Barinasuchus was about the size of the average Allosaurus fragilis, and the recently discovered Dentaneosuchus seems to have been about as large. The Jurassic Razanandrongobe was of similar size, which would have made it one of the top predators in its otherwise dinosaur dominated ecosystem. The Triassic pseudosuchian Fasolasuchus was larger than any of them, but still not comparable to Tyrannosaurus.

    The images all show osteoderms. Do they know that these phytosaurs had osteoderms, or is that just an artistic assumption based on these animals having similar body shape to crocodiles?

    • @chimerasuchus
      @chimerasuchus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phytosaurs had even more osteoderms than crocodilians do.

    • @petrairene
      @petrairene ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chimerasuchus Ah, I see, so fossilized osteoderms were found. Are ostederms in both convergent evolution or did the ancestors of both already have these osteoderms? How is the evolutionary relationship between phytosaurs and crocodylians?

    • @chimerasuchus
      @chimerasuchus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is unclear whether phytosaurs were basal pseudosuchians or merely very closely related archosauriforms. However, given the distribution of osteoderms in Archosauriformes, it seems that they were the result of common ancestry.

      Birds. Although the placement of Liopleurodon's branch of reptiles, Sauropterygia, is unclear, they do not belong to Archosauriformes like the phytosaurs and dinosaurs.
