5:05 "We will all be back here doing the Same dance five years from now" scary accurate.
He was a smart guy then as now
Omen
You can tell Bob is really into something when he goes full-uh Mayuh Quimby.
the Boston is strong in this episode
+Hunter “The Pun Lord” Hendry I was thinking that, too. But I like it!
Its pretty epic
That and bob being overly morbid sjw
"Products sell if you advertise them".
DID YOU HEAR THAT, NINTENDO?
I've seen the Smash bros 3DS adverts loads. The "Smash Out" one.
and five years later they are doing rebirth another reboot type thing. So yeah Bob called it.
That last part made me burst into actual fits of laughter, ahahahaha!!!
Did Bob call it or what?! People got pissed because a massive amount of the New 52 universe was garbage, some then-new fans became now-old fans and demanded older characters and plot elements come back... aaaaand five or so years later, they goddamn semi-rebooted again with Rebirth, sure enough!! PFF, DC is so goddamned predictable.
I like it when Bob slips into his Boston accent
+ToruKun1 The mystery of which accent will present itself adds tension
+ToruKun1 Well he didn't just slip this time he dove right in and embraced it for once.
The angrier he gets, the thicker his accent gets
the reason i started watching these "comics are weird" videos is because i always wanted to read comics but always was to confused and didn't wanna put too much energy into searching everything.. but these videos are really helpful :D
My son loves comics and all it took was me giving him my old x-men comics.
The funny thing is that him unlike me, he doesn't care that the movies are awful or that the continuity is broken at every possible weakpoint, he just loves seeing his favorite characters outside of the drawn world. It keeps my nerd rage in check and reminds me of when I was just glad that something new was happening with the characters I loved.
I was talking to a friend yesterday about how bad I freaked out reading the comic where Magneto took the adamantium out of Wolverine. When I was a kid I stepped away from the comic in disbelief. "No, no, no..no waaaaay!" I yelled as I paced around the room gripping the hair on top of my head. This kind of investment to a character and to story are sorely missed in my now cynical adulthood. I hope that my son enjoys those moments as much as I did.
probably the best and most continuously topical thing bob has ever done!!
"START WHEREVA YA WANT!
IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTA!"
Bravo, I just found your chan, and I've been binging on the Big Picture.
This is my favorite yet, take that for what it's worth. Peace. Thank you for uploading.
+Ohim Leyesh Same here been binging for like 2 days.
been reading comics since i was a kid and whenever a friend is curious about reading something i always recommend to start with a book from vertigo or image. you dont have to worry about continuity for the most part
It's 2017 and Rebirth just happened... Dayum!
I have never held a single comic book in my entire life and now, thanks to Bob, I know the majority of what there is to know about Supergirl, Ms. Marvel and what happens to comic books every forty years or so.
I love how most, if not all the comments are about his accent.
You should do a continuity episode explaining how moviebob of world 1 is an incredibly insightful and well spoken writer for all of nerd culture, and moviebob of world 2 is an incredibly insightful and we'll spoken writer for all of nerd culture whose explicitly from boston. :P it always trips me up when that accent shines thru in only some episodes.
In all seriousness, LOVE your videos, I've basically been binge watching everything with ur name on it for the better part of a week now and I can't see myself stopping. Keep it up partner.
This is why I love reading IDW's MLP series; it's so easy to find these days, I can pretty much catch up whenever the hell I want, and considering most the main series tends to be told in multi-part stories without much connecting them besides a vague connection to the TV Series or whatever Spin-Off Movie DHX and Hasbro have put out, it's incredibly accessible.
Then there's the Microseries and "Friends Forever" lines, which are typically self-contained stories, and thus even more accessible, alongside the class Annual Event Issue.
I'd say IDW has things pretty well, even if not everyone's familiar with them beyond the Transformers comics.
Let's not forget the micro-series!
Part of the reason I don't read comics is because of the continuity issues.
The biggest problem is that there are no stakes. The hero won't die. If, by some quirk, the hero does die, he/she will be brought back eventually some ludicrously contrived scenario. Hell, even the villain rarely dies. I want stories with a beginning, middle, and end. Comics have a beginning and an endless middle. That's all.
Just because the hero themselves rarely is in honest to god danger of dying does not mean that there are no stakes. We live in a day and age where even Superman fails to save people.
Try checking out comics that are not part of the Big Two (Marvel and DC). Those have a beginning, middle, and end.
Ed Maldonado Comics of the Big Two also have that. They just have characters existing beyond the individual stories.
Lokiraak I know. I'm just suggesting that there are plenty of alternatives. I personally only read Amazing Spider-Man in single issues and the rest of the time I pick up random trades from the Recommended Section of my comic shop. It's how I discovered Saga, Sex Criminals, and Pretty Deadly for example. Today I picked up Batman: Court of Owls. I'm really enjoying it, so I'll probably pick up the rest of Scott Snyder's run via trades over time, and I'll stop reading Batman when he gets off the book. I always have new comics to read every week this way and it's always fun.
shuichiboy Yeah, comics are essentially meant to go on forever. However, as to the hero never dieing, the hero never dies in any medium. You know James Bond is never going to die in a gunfight or plane crash.
I love hearing your Boston accent :) it makes me happy
Dears Gods, your accent bleeds through here WAY more than it normally does.
and it is beautiful
That's how you can tell he's very serious about something.
Birds fly, grass grows, sun shines and brother, I talk about comic books!
I prefer it when he just uses his normal accent :)
God damn this is a good video. Every word in here is spot on, and unfortunately, no one took his word. Since this video, dcs already done the "no wait old continuity is back" and marvel has rebooted as well as also doing the "old stuff is back" thing. Jesus guys
Don Miguel The 5th how else I'd dc gonna get the fans of the old continuity back?
He explains that. He's from Boston, and that's his accent / actual voice. The voice he uses is his 'recording voice'.
this is why i read manga
He explains it in a later episode Bob's normal voice is Bostonian but for the sake of ease of editing and production of his shows he uses a radio voice.
Your accent sounds so good in this video
Q: "I want to get into comics, but where do I start?
A: "Watchmen"
Frankly that's a strange answer to the question on account of the fact that Watchmen is built as a deconstruction of a genre so why would you recommend a deconstruction as a person's introduction into said genre?
Love your accent XD
This is so true.
Drunk!bob: ya know how i could get more people to watch the big picture? more boston. people love boston.
and so this episode was born
How come you only sometimes have an accient?
He masks it! What you typically hear from him is his "reporter voice".
I never thought about advertising being one of the bigger issues, but that's a great point. However, I don't know about Marvel, but I know DC sells a large chunk of their graphic novels/volumes at major booksellers like Barnes & Noble and they're all over the place on Amazon. Having some single issues at the Walmart checkout would be nice though haha. Maybe that's why DC is so focused on television these days. Between Arrow, the Flash, Gotham, and Constantine--the success of Arrow and the publicity the pilots of the others are getting must be boosting comic sales for those characters. They seem to be basically really flashy and expensive ads for them, even though Arrow is a great show.
His accent really came out in this one, lol.
Is this the only episode where bob has an accent? Lol
I was reading a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic when I saw a Samurai Jack comic being advertised in that comic. I would never had known that comic existed if I didn't read that comic. So yeah, Bob definitely as a point here.
Is it me or did Movie Bob sound like Krippe(I think thats how you spell it) from Big Bang Theory when he said "Start where ever you want".
He sounds like Al fucking Capone.... I like it.
I like the Reboot of The Big Picture. His new Boston origin, gives him more of a comedic touch.
I find this episode to be the most wicked Hawdcore of all of them.
WOOOW is Brooklyn accent is heeeeeeavy here xD
3 years later, we now have movies to err "thank" for making comicbooks slightly more popular than they were in the 90s. The thing is, I don't enjoy that the movies are now bleeding through to the comicbook continuity resulting in companies doing a 'soft' or 'beginner' reboot for newbies that only know of the characters through the actors and movies. This was rarely to never done when animated versions of a comic book were released, since animated movies borrowed bits and pieces of a characters history/events and just made it work for that purpose.
Marvel may be good at connecting their live-action MCU, but their comicbooks are a mess when it comes to continuity. They have more universes than DC due to this reason.
I think i figured out why he speaks with the acent on this one. He talks about continanity that gets rebooted. So he rebooted his continanity. ( i know i spelled wrong )
My advice, start on the wiki page. You'll end up there after 3 pages of whatever book you picked up anyways.
I miss you bob.
I guess for me as a relativly new trade/graphic novel/omnibus reader it comes down to money, availability and time. And off course searching for what´s good in a bloated and over saturated entertainment market.
American mainstream comics aka superhero comics aka DC comics and its various derivative works don't really follow regular continuity rules because, due to a series of massive transformative events culminating in Stan Lee's de facto retirement from comics writing in the 1970s, they got an across the board creative castration which drastically increased adaptibility (to merchandise, movies, etc.) but also sent the comics themselves into a freefall which continues to this day.
My problem with comics was not so much that they were hard to find, but that they were crazy expensive from a kid on allowance. I'd buy the first few issues of a series I thought looked interesting, only to abandon it when I didn't want to spend the five-seven dollars of my limited disposable income every time a new issue came out.
How log's it take to beat an obscure topic to death?
Bam. Time's up. You're dead.
I'm surprised that not a lot of manga has slipped into this. Sure there are long running series but they usually have a main linear/overarching storyline and don't crossover into each other in whole new arcs/events, when they do get a crossover it's usually a one chapter/episode type of thing. The only exception I've found of this so far is the CLAMP universe.
+Katherine Sanderson He mentions in one of TBP Episodes that he's not really into Manga much because he doesn't have a good grasp of the history of it like he does with Comics
Andy Howard Yeah, I know, I'm not talking about MovieBob not mentioning manga, I'm talking about manga not having these crossover continuities that comic books have.
what's funny is that it was 5 yrs later when they rebooted new 52 into Rebirth
John Goodrich rebirth isn't a reboot,it's a new status quo
this guy sounds like Barry Kripke from the Big Bang Theory.
As for why Bob seemed to sound like a low rent JFK (or the scout, your pick), go watch the Out of the Park episode of the Big Picture.
yes but the problem is when you want to start at the start where do you go ?
idc what are your argument of starting at the issue the ultimate spiderman issue number 374687698978907878978977889789798987978978979978897896897 because i should not care about what happen before peter parker became the iron spider with a captain america shield and with the infinity gauntlet. I want to know why and start where it all started..
Fact: The new 52 was another DC initiative to stop Watchmen from going out of print.
For the ones already knowledgeable about what this really entails, that's another spiral to descend upon.
Today ain't ya day pancakes.
Loving the Accent, btw.
Rubberman202 Samurai Jack comic fuck yes i need to get it it continues after that last episode XD
He was EXACTLY right since Rebirth came out five or so years later and unrebooted everything
that thing about doctor who is true... I started watching doctor who at series5 and 6. then I got series 1-4 in a box set
Your Boston is showing.
TRUTH!!!
What's the episode called when he explains his Boston accent
Or you could be like me who watched Gundam from the first ep and Doctor Who from the first ep (as much as is still left I read or watched recreations of lost episodes).
C'mon! Start pushin' the cart!
A bunch of my favorite books were discontinued or abruptly cut short when DC pulled this shit.
I like the Boston accent.
this is kind of like the new Forever Evil arch that finished a few issues ago, they just fixed the whole time line now they have to go mess it up again!
his real accent i way cooler then the other one.
BONK!
this episode brought to you by the scout
His accent starts at 1:10
Not like that's a bad thing, or anything.
thanks for the advice Bob, I'm buying the new three first volumes of the new Captain Marvel
Clearly Marvel dude
Bonk!
He sounds like the guy from Big Bang Theory
I had no idea u were from Boston
What was with the suddenly heavy accent? I've noticed that Movie Bob had an accent before, but this is the first time it's seriously shown. Why did he not conceal it this episode like he usually does?
What is that at 2:38?
"Out of the Park", where he talks about South Park.
onw hing my brother said, he went to kings comics, a fairly well known comic book shop in the middle of the CBD of sydney, australia, looking for a comic for his friend who liked one of ither the marvel or DC guys most likely from the mnarvelk movie set, he noticed that the staff were not helpful because he didnt fit the type/ wasnt a existing reader, he asked where they were and the staff didnt go and show him , and they wernt swamped either...
so thats mnore of that 'nerd elitism bobs touched on a few times in his videos.
now i do historical reenactment, which can be a bit snobby as well, but when someone seemsinterested, like one guy showed up to an event with a tunic, trousers, and viking cloak, with a cloak pin made from a wire coat hanger and i gave him several starting points, if someone is interested in what IM interested, im overjoyed, MY problem is that i occasionalkly OVERload them....
I had the opposite situation when I went into a comic book store in NYC when I was on vacation. I don't remember the name of the store, but it's across the street from the empire state building. I went in to buy some comics for the plane ride home. anyway, this was when New52 was starting up and I had some questions I went over to the clerk to ask about it, we ended up having a 10 minute conversation and I ended up buying twice as many comics as I planned
3:34 Yeah, and the first Episodes of Dr. Who have been DESTROYED! X-0
Boston.
Why do you sound so Boston?
The downside with DC's marketing was that it was a fucking joke. The commercials reached multiple cable channels but they were vague on what was going on and focused more on the big titles and less on the other products. Same with the writing staff, quality writers/artists on the big guns, total shit on the lesser knowns. Honestly, I'd have to spend almost an hour of whats wrong with DC these days...
Why did Bob turn into Jersey Shore?
spideralexandre2099 If you are referring to a change in accent, yes, I was thinking the same thing. Sort of ;)
+Tazcam See some of his older/newer TBP Episodes, he's always had a Boston accent.
His boston accent occasionally bleeds in to his recordings
His boston accent occasionally bleeds in to his recordings
His boston accent occasionally bleeds in to his recordings
Yeah, he sounds completely different
Is it just me or did his accent get twenty times heavier in this episode?
He must have just watch The Town, I did the same thing for a week
Why does your voice sound different
Who the fuck starts reading a book in the middle of a series?
yo you been watchin' JJJeeerrsy shore Boyeee
Holy accent Batman, what the hell?
+jac6995 He has had a Boston Accent for a long time and has managed to keep it under control throughout the series, letting it slip/pop up with certain words or phrases he uses often. This time though he says "fuck it" and totally goes "Full Boston" on us.
+Andy Howard Actually, he says "fack it."
what's the name of the anime he used in this episode?
Read or Die, and Gundam
narrated by the scout
dat accent gustaface.jpg
And then the New 52 shat the bed.
Continuity isn't a dealbreaker for people when it comes to comics. I love continuity. The difference is that comic continuity is terrible. It's the nature of the medium, different writers, complete refusal to change, a massive hard on for multiple universes but apparent lack of the realisation that comics would be more interesting if given unique names and with pre planned storylines rather than sprawling asspulling bullshit. And if they have those and I'm just misinformed. Fucking advertise.
Just pick a book with a nice cover.. then realise the book sucks..
Then you just try try again until you find origin by marvel or Akira by Otomo..
(Bring loads of money)
>:O I SAW GUNDAM :D
