One thing about IU's music is how she uses her work to express her self. We, the audience, know that when we listen to her singing, we get her genuine thoughts and feelings.
The song Eight is about her struggle dealing with the suicide deaths of 3 of her friends. Junghyun of Shinee in 2017, whom she was very close to, Sulli of FX in the fall of 2019 who she was also very close and had known for 8 years and about 30 days later during her final concert performance and just before performing her last song she learned of the death of Goo Hara. There is a fan cam video of her talking about this and how she wasn't sure she would be able to sing this last song. It is an extremely moving and emotional video. The last song was Dear Name, a very emotional song itself and the it is the most difficult song for her to sing. She makes it through the song although you can easily tell how difficult it was for her. That was her last concert performance until this concert on Sept 17 & 18 of this year where she opened the concert with Eight. A song she wrote after her last concert in 2019 and released as a single on May 6th 2020. There are several explanation videos of Eight available that do a pretty good job of decoding the song, but none of them caught everything going on in the video. All 3 of her friends are represented in the MV. Both Junghyun and Hara had connections to either lizards or dragons. Junghyun had a connection with a dragon Pokemon character and Hara had a nickname iguana. Sulli is the 2d animated girl in White. You did pick up on the 2d and 3d animation. This represented the difference between the worlds that they now exist in. One major aspect that the explanation videos seem to miss is what is actually going on with the 2d characters. Most stating that the girl is running carefree without any worries. However knowing that nothing in an IU MV just happens, I will give you a different interpretation of these scenes. In the lyrics IU says she doesn't want to love anyone again because they just come and go as the please never saying goodbye. This is the unintended consequence of suicide that the living are left with and those that have departed are unable to appreciate from within the pain they are dealing with. Sulli has heard IU and the last thing Sulli would ever want would be to be the cause of IU giving up on love. So Sulli with the help of Junghyun want to correct this situation as best they can. Sulli never seemed to me to be running without a care. On the contrary she seemed to be running with determination has if she might be late for something. She comes to a black barrier. This black barrier is what virtually everyone misses in the MV and again nothing appears in IU MV's without a purpose or reason. This black barrier is the division between the Living world and the after life. Sulli parts the blackness and looks out onto the 3d living world. Junghyun in the form if a dragon is there to meet her and take her to meet the plane IU and Suga are on. As they approach and pass IU and Sulli see eachother and Sulli is able to say goodbye to her friend. IU is reassured that her friend are "finally happy now" and she smiles. As Sulli looks back at IU her expression is one of concern and perhaps sorrow that she caused IU hardship and Hope's IU will love again. And yes IU is one of the rare artist who actually sounds better live. One ofvthe best ways to get to know IU's music is by watching her live Dingo Music Killing Voice performance where she sings a melody of some of the songs she has song during her 20's. Later on, authorities confirmed that she had passed away. At the same time, IU, another K-pop artist who was close to both Sulli and Goo Hara, was performing at her Day 2 concert in Seoul when she heard the news. Fans who were present at the concert said that halfway through the concert, IU broke down and cried. Videos and pictures of the event do not exist as the fansites are working very hard to keep them from being spread out. On Day 1 of her concert, IU dedicated a special song towards the late Sulli, whom she was friends with as well. If that’s not enough, IU was also very tight with the late Jonghyun of Shinee, who passed away in 2017.
