Thank you for posting. I just bought a 2003 R1150Rt and was looking for the procedures for changing the gearbox fluid. Great video!

Folks! Please remove the "Filler" first. Imagine your disappointment if you did the Drain Plug first, Removed all of the fluid, then found that your "Fill" plug was ceased or stripped or...?

    Welcome
My father has the same bike 1998 1100 and has been in storage for 20 years and he did not start it, knowing that its counter is less than 3000 km and we tried to start it and the engine does not move and I want to run it but I am afraid of the brake tubes breaking or anything else that causes an accident
What is the correct way to operate

Thank you, so much, for taking the time to record this. I live in a small town in a remote part of British Columbia, Canada and the nearest Service Dealer is a 3 hour ride (one way) at highway speeds. So, thanks for the instructions and tips (types of oils to use). You saved me a lot of time and $$$ and now I can ride with the peace of mind that I've done it right. Cheers!

You can find the maintenance manual for the R1150RT published by BMW at:
    www.weerman.nu/motor/BMW1150RT_servicemanual.pdf
Wiring diagrams can be found at:

I like the design, you don't have to remove body parts for this maintenance. The belly pan is not difficult to get off for the engine oil/filter, straight forward procedure. The final drive is easy as well. How often should you replace transmission and final drive fluids?

Well done with the tutorial. Just a question though, BMW state that the gear box uses 800ml of oil, not 1 litre. I am wondering if for some reason that BMW's in the USA, hold more oil in the gearbox that they do here in Australia. Could you please read your manual, and tell me what it states. The manual for my 2004 RT1150R, which is identical to yours, (beautiful silver) states 800ml, as does the English (UK) manuals, as a mate of mine in the UK, has the same bike as well. I would be a little concerned adding an extra 200ml, if it's incorrect. This is absolutely not a criticism, just seeking clarification. I have enjoyed watching your videos, keep up the good work.
    Kindest Regards, Darren Australia.

Well, is it 800 of 1000 ml? Please someone answer the question. Thank you. I believe the 1000 ml is for a rebuilt transmission if there is such a thing for this bike.

The official service manual says to fill the gearbox oil to the bottom edge of the filler neck. Which is about 0.8 l.

According to the operating instructions, 800ml or to the bottom edge of the filler neck is given to the BMW 1150 RT (EU / USA). In practice, during the exchanges I poured about 1l - to the bottom edge of the filler neck.
