You can't skip "America Obliterates Half Of Iran's Navy In 8 Hours! - Operation Praying Mantis" by The Fat Electrician. It's comedy gold. The origin story of America's naval motto "Don't touch my boats!" about the Barbary Pirates is great too.
Just incase you were unaware, Nic is also one of the four hosts of the UNSUBSCRIBE podcast. Always funny, almost always alcohol fuelled addressing a variety of topics ranging from veterans affairs, guns, politics, and current affairs. The " core four" hosts, also known as " the gang" normally has fun guests to help float the podcast. Hard to go wrong with The Fat Electrician, but the one he did on the Barbary Pirates is pretty damn good. Well, all of his are pretty damn good so no mater what you do next, I'll like it.
I liked 'Old age and treachery' . Uno reverse- I found your channel when I spotted the fat electrician thumbnail. Looking forward to checking out your videos!
His show on the 11th airborne AKA The Angels and their operation for freeing a Japanese POW camp in WWII is very good and, although I know a lot about WWII Pacific I had never heard of it. Good reaction.
Maps, location of other German boats, corridors, hiking spots patterns of movement... But, yes, also, the tech and engineering were of ultimate importance.
The Fat Electrician has a ton of awesome videos. I would recommend: "The Last War Chief" - About Joe Medicine Crow, who completed 4 tasks during WWII that earned him the title of Crow War Chief. "America Obliterates Pirate Nations" - About how the US Navy was founded to fight pirates. "Biggest Logistical Flex Of All Time" - The Berlin Airlift. Feeding an entire city with cargo planes. Also, as we get closer to Christmas, you have to check out his video about Toys For Tots, which was started by the Marines.
You'll like all of his videos. He is a great story teller. He often but not always has some bonus video at the end so in the future make sure you get all the way to the end if you react to him again.
America Obliterates Half of Iran's Navy in 8 Hours! Is a great story and he's very funny also You really can't go wrong with any of his videos. He has a second channel (The Fat Files) where he talks about different topics like Spirit Halloween and Costco in the same funny and entertaining style
I lived in Chicago some time ago when the boat was still outside. Part of the exhibit was a short film from the actual capture.. Some of the captured sailors were still alive during the 1980s and after the film one of the survivors was brought out to speak to the audience.... Back then every few years the museum would fly survivors who could still travel to Chicago to visit the boat and to do a couple of talks.... There was also some "vip" stuff too but I wasn't one. I was shocked by his presence and really enjoyed seeing him.
You'd love all of The Fat Electrician's stuff. He is not only a fantastic storyteller, but he does his homework and covers stories that deserve to be told. His biography of Dan Donham is good, but I have not seen anything from him that wasn't excellent.
I've actually been in that sub several times. First time as a kid, I didn't really care, but later in life, and knowing the story, it's worth it if you have the time.
The Barbary Pirates video is amazing. How we got some of the sayings, expressions, and legends we still have and revere in the military today. Sub and bell earned.
You cannot go wrong with TFE. Note - my father was in the Merchant Marines during WW2 and was a radio operator/50 cal spotter and was on the ships that the U-boats were after. Ironically in 1971 he (Engineer by education) became Director of Building Services at the Museum of Science and Industry where the U-505 is. As a teen, I would go in with him some Saturdays an hour or two before it opend and got to go through it many times. As large as it is from the outside, it is amazing to imagine 50 guys in the cramped interior for weeks and weeks! Nice reaction!
Fat Electrician is the best. Love this guy, he reminds me of myself to the point where I think we'd just argue constantly because we both think we are right. lol
Most excellent video. I've watched this video several times because I grew up south of Chicago and I've been through the sub at least twice in my youth, but I find myself now on the West Coast at 70. Subbed.
@@NoProtocol It's about Cassius Clay the abolitionist that the boxer was named after. The cringe about him changing his "slave name" from Cassius Clay to Mohamed Ali becomes evident.
They also captured japanese Sentoku submarines, the largest submarines ever built before nuclear submarines were a thing. Those even had a tube catapult to send out Zeros and would be used in Pearl Harbor if the 22 large fleet wasn't ambushed a few weeks before.
Nic is the best. Hilarious delivery and he does the research properly to make sure he gets the full story done right. I've watched all his videos here on YT and there are no bad ones. Billie Holiday is great! Such a great voice... A good selection. 🙂 A friend of mine's dad was a huge fan of her since he was a kid and I remember her music on the record player at their house almost every time I was there. 🙂
There are no bad ones? I saw just one and had to stop halfway, way to much USA patriotismus and bald eagle screaching. Hunter Killer Groups were an Royal Navy invention, not an US one. Hedgehog were an Royal Navy invention, not an US one. Hurr durr, 50 german couldnt fix the damages, but 9 muricans could do it. Yeah, the muricans had time to do it, the Germans not. Also the engines werent jammed, they captured it with running engines, stopped the engines, because the rudder was jammed, and were unable to restart the engines. To see how "brave" muricans were, look up the surrender of U-235 at the end of the war. After they borded the boat, armed to the teeth, the germans werent allowed to use the intercom anymore, so they had to send couriers through the boat. When one courier came running into the engine room, the guard there shat his pants, droped his guns and surrendered. They also put a chain from the periscop, through the conning tower hatch and the depth plane steering wheels and some valve wheels, thinking this will stop the germans from sinking the boat. Total oblivious that the steering wheels are only the backup, in normal operation the depth planes and ruders were moved electrical by a pudh of a button.
I would recommend Willis Lee, Dan Daly, Jake McNasty, the 11th Air Borne Raid on Los Banos. I would start with those. All of the Fat Electrician is good. I would also recommend his other channel the fat files. He researches companies and non history related things but still funny and good.
Regarding to a channel which tells about unknown war stories I could recommend the Swedish rock band Sabaton. They have their own channel and also the channel Sabaton history. They sing and talk about unknown war stories. I recommend "no bullets fly", "40:1", "ghost devision" or "Panzerkampf" to name a few.
Watched this last night. You are my favorite reactor. Please watch more Fat Electrician videos. He is my No2 right behind George Carlin, Bill Burr and Dave Allen. Dave's Adam and Eve is priceless! I find myself watching your facial expressions more than the videos. You have an expressive and beautiful face.
My favourite of his videos is "Wrecking & Trolling The Germans With A Wooden Plane - DH-98 Mosquito". The Mosquito was a truly inspired design very ahead of its time.
the latest episode of unsubscribe has a medal of honor recipient who tells his story of the battle where he was awarded his medal. it's a 2hour podcast but great story. a e5 and 2ndLT was basically left in charge of an outpost that had 50 Americans and over 400 taliban attacked the base. the LT called in bombing run that aiming for hitting with 100yds of the base.
The photographer makes sense though. If they couldn't capture it and make it to port, those pictures would be valuable intel. Layouts, gauges, engine room, etc
Seen your " but why" response when he mentioned possibly nuking the submarine. The fat electrician has a video of a battleship that had been nuked Not once but twice and still was afloat. Good humorous video if your bored. Btw nice reaction video. Look forward to more.
THAT's how I know this story!! I knew I'd heard it before! I used to read a lot of WW2 resistance stories, and I've read about the history of cryptography a bit, too. in both cases, I ran into bits of information about how we got our hands on an Enigma machine! now, of course, figuring out how to use it was yet another story.
12:04 - Don't know if it was the "why", but it was definitely a hope. Even in the UK (home of some of the best code-breakers of the war), nobody could figure out what was in those messages. The messages could be heard, since they were transmitted on radio, but were seriously scrambled. Encryption's "grandpa", it seems. The German machine that de-encrypted the messages was like a manually operated version of 'the key'.
Fat electrician is my absolute favorite the fact that you did one makes me like your content and you even more, keeping your love of the animal kingdom in mind, I suggest you do a video on the war horse Sergeant reckless or the one on the devil duck.. the most gangster politician Cassius Clay is also an amazing story I am proud to say I know now.
The US used German POWs as farm labor in California. My dad was a child field worker in the 40s. Grapes of wrath stuff.... he tells me stories all the time.
German POW's made quite a few houses and other buildings in Chicago. Hines VA hospital just outside the city was built by them. If its a red brick building from that time, it was built by German POW's.
Sabaton is a power metal band from Sweden, they sing metal songs about history, the also have a TH-cam channel that goes further in depth on the subjects of the songs. Bismarck, Resist and Bite, The Last Stand, Night Witches and Shiroyama are some of my personal favorites.
My favorite cover of "I'll be seeing you" is sung by Jo Stafford. She has such a rich smooth resonant voice in that song. I've yet to see a bad Fat Electrician video. Work your way through all of them. You won't be disappointed I promise.
Real tank genious of ww2 - Percy "hobo" Hobart. And World War Tree - operation paul bunyan To be fare, anything he discusses is amzaing. Book recommendations for you, Ms. Protocol: "U-505" by Rear Admiral Daniel V. Gallery, USN (retired/deceased) and his autobiography "Eight Bells." His fiction is worth a read, too, if you enjoy military humor. One alarming fact that The Fat Electrician didn't mention was that the volunteer boarding parties were tasked with finding and removing the ARMED scuttling charges, but couldn't find the last one until much, MUCH later while the boat was under tow. The young sailors stayed aboard and continued doing their jobs anyway. Truly the greatest generation!
The Americans Wanted the communication machine called the enigma machine to decipher the German code. That was the most important part of the mission probably
I was personally told by a elderly friend George he worked in a suicide squad in wwII. The us government was working with the Mafia as was the US Military. The Sub stolen was an Italian made Fiberglass sub that could not be detected by Sonar. The team that was sent in was Mafia who worked with the italian mob. To get the location and help set up the theft. He told me It went down without a hitch.
I was on three submarines, all Los Angeles class though. I actually toured U 505 on leave from boot camp. There was a movie, it seems like most people have forgotten it, had Matthew McConaughey and Jon Bon Jovi that was based partially on this story called "U-571.
So you were on a new one, eh? I got to spend 4 years on the USS Skate, SSN 578. When they made it into razor blades I stopped shaving in fear it would get me again.
Respectfully, U571 is a crock of shit. That mission was British and happened before the US joined the war. It’s actually an entertaining movie but from a British perspective, it’s kinda disrespectful
@@rupeoverlay3153 Its from any perspective, except the US one, disrespectfull. A good indicator for a good/bad hollywood war movie is, if its supported by the pentagon or not
Imagine having the first and second largest navies on the planet with the first being your actual and your second being the fleet of mothballed and museum ships. As well as the first and second largest airforces on the planet.
The Bugle Boy of Company c. During the war itselfthe Andrew Sisters made that a huge hit during the war. Bette Midler also revived that song And made a hit out of it also. So there we have one song. 2 different versions, both becoming huge hits.
Ella Mae Morse. She could sing anything: jazz, blues, country; too bad she's not better known. Her "Cow-Cow Boogie" was the first million-seller for Capitol Records. My favorite of hers is "5-10-15 Hours."
I just know the Fat Electrician from guest starring in someone else's video, but that video seems so incredibly up your alley that I thought I should recommend it anyway. You can find it by searching for "The Government Nuked North Carolina…Twice". Insanely enough, that title is not a euphemism.
The only questionable information on the video is hoping the ennigma code wouldn't change. British intelligence, French and Polish resistances already knew the codes changed at least every week. The cyphers recombination for the next week were the last transmission. If they didn't know the codes for the individual disc cyphers there was also no point decrypting the message saying which discs to use. If you want to know more about the enigma machine I highly recommend James Grime for the subject. My favorite o lf his is on the Numberphille channel. His videos with Matt Parker on StandupMaths is also very cool =) And of course, breaking the enigma code itself was Alan Turing's life achievement with the first physical implementation of the Church-Turing machine.
So much love your content! You are a true gem of the internet! Please concider reacting on the Gotland class submarine video beeing leased to the US! Such an important story when we talk about submarine war and the protection of US waters and warfares. Thanks for your beautiful smile❤
Count Dankula is an amazing story teller. He has his 'Mad Lads' which are extreme people stories. Good, bad and strange people. There is a little cross over with Fat Electrician. Good watch.
@NoProtocol he's been around for a while. Scottish man. Had a controversy over a joke. Lots of youtubers use his clip of, "In the business, we call this foreshadowing."
I knew the story, but not all the details so was, metaphorically, scratching my head, thinking, "do I, don't I know this ..?" but on the mention of the Polish submariner from the German crew who helped it was apparent I did. Remarkable feat. Not to down play what was acheived but it is possible that it was decided the crew had a better chance of survival if they surfaced than if they continued to try and evade. Books: not WW2 era, but ... "Submarine: A Guided Tour Inside a Nuclear Warship" by Tom Clancy and someone else whose name I cannot recall. And for WW2, "Thunder Below!" by Admiral Eugene Fluckey, an account of the exploits of USS Barb Music: Yellow Submarine by The Beatles would be too easy to be on theme. To be 'for the period', how about 'Frenesi' by Artie Shaw (from 1940) - aided by the fact Shaw served with the US Navy as a band leader (a thing I did not actually realise until just now)
I can't really pick a favorite, all his videos are awesome. I'm down for any you want to react to. They're all fantastic. EDIT: Actually, I lied. You should watch his video on Carlos "Whitefeather" Hathcock, the greatest sniper ever. Then watch the video he did with his friend Pew View that crosses with that video, they're both great.
Yes there was something at the end. The actual news story showing the sub. Did you miss it? Watch the ending again. Its not always him at the end, its sometines a news story, of if its about a person perhaps the person themselves in an interview, to show the reality was not just a story he told. So watch the news clips! Watch about mcnasty mcniece and cassius clay. Also dismantling of pirates. Keep watching! And dont forget to let the video run through and dont ignore the news clips he wanted to show. Theyre important
They probably wanted the Enigma machine and code books, as well as any other info they could find. I imagine a couple of the torpedoes went to the naval weapons research lab, for reverse engineering. (ours SUCKED for much of the war.) And, of course, to study the u boat itself. plus, you know, bragging rights.

The Berlin airlift episode by the fat electrician is hysterical
He makes every story he tells entertaining!
And sadly it's no longer taught in American schools. Please review his video here so more people can see it
Excellent choice, but this is a girl, so show her ‘Reckless’.
Really can't go wrong with any FE content.
@mcraiderking5690 are you amateur sexist or have you gone pro? Yes the story of Sgt reckless would be good but, what the fuck

I’m going to look up that film!
They didn't ship the sub overland, they took it through the St Lawrence Seaway all the way to Chicago, then moved by land
Because of the Enigma Encoding Machine that is on board ALL German U-boats during WW2. That and, the code book!!
Fat Electrician Marine Corps birthday is a good one to me.
I just know the Fat Electrician from guest starring in someone else's video, but that video seems so incredibly up your alley that I thought I should recommend it anyway. You can find it by searching for "The Government Nuked North Carolina…Twice". Insanely enough, that title is not a euphemism.
No Protocol Awesome Video Today!!🔥🐐🐐💎
Hey! Welcome back
The only questionable information on the video is hoping the ennigma code wouldn't change.
His videos with Matt Parker on StandupMaths is also very cool =)
And of course, breaking the enigma code itself was Alan Turing's life achievement with the first physical implementation of the Church-Turing machine.
he makes history fun
So much love your content! You are a true gem of the internet! Please concider reacting on the Gotland class submarine video beeing leased to the US! Such an important story when we talk about submarine war and the protection of US waters and warfares. Thanks for your beautiful smile❤
Fat electrician “Cassius Clay” is the best story that he tells plus it’s awesome American history!!!! And Muhammad Ali is named after the guy!!!
Count Dankula is an amazing story teller. He has his 'Mad Lads' which are extreme people stories. Good, bad and strange people. There is a little cross over with Fat Electrician. Good watch.
I haven’t heard of Count Dankula, I’ll have a look! Thank you
@NoProtocol he's been around for a while.
And for WW2, "Thunder Below!" by Admiral Eugene Fluckey, an account of the exploits of USS Barb
Music: Yellow Submarine by The Beatles would be too easy to be on theme.
Band of Beavers is dated in the late 1940s. but I think it's one of the funnier and light hearted stories.
Americas War horse Marine - Sgt Reckless. One of his best
Theyre important
german enigma comunication machine
I'm guessing they wanted to study it so they could know everything about the enemy submarines.
1st it was the U 505 a Type ixC
The crew had no time set off the charges
They probably wanted the Enigma machine and code books, as well as any other info they could find. I imagine a couple of the torpedoes went to the naval weapons research lab, for reverse engineering. (ours SUCKED for much of the war.) And, of course, to study the u boat itself.
plus, you know, bragging rights.
