  • Dr. Russell Ackoff lectures on improvement efforts that go beyond improving the parts of a system to improving the whole. The best explanation of why most improvement efforts are "anti-systemic" and why this causes them to fail that I've seen him give.
This lecture was given at the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati on Ma 2, 1995.

I am a rugby coach who has followed systems thinking for years to maximize the strength of the teams that I have coached. We enjoyed unparalleled success in the history of the teams. Success was defined by more than the fact that we won trophies but also by the journey we shared together.
I agree that systems thinking is essential in today's world. I know what can be done when players on a team/system are empowered to work together in a positive manner. The synergy of the system is greater than the energy of the parts.
I only discovered Dr. Ackoff last night and was immediately enthralled. Thank-you so much for posting. This is an amazing and simple explanation of an enormously important concept. He and Peter Senge after him, are/were ahead of their times.

Thanks for your perceptive comment. I hope you will share this video (and the others of Dr. Ackoff's lectures posted here) widely.
In my many years of seeking change / transformational management wisdom, he is the most brilliant thinker I ever found. Beyond Peter Senge or David Cooperrider, to name just two currently active systems thinking professors.

I'm happy your mind was blown :)
Discontinuous change... based on the principles Ackoff and W. Edwards Deming taught... is what the world desperately needs now. A cooperation-based world is possible! Please watch my video of Dr. Deming speaking about a world where "everyone wins".
