Tunic Review

- Tunic looks like Zelda but plays more like Dark Souls. It is an unapologetically challenging action-adventure game that is charming, multi-layered, and immensely rewarding to solve. Reviewed on PC by Ryan McCaffrey. Also available on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

@@nix764ummm...what??
One correction. While there isn’t any difficulty settings, you can turn on “no fail” and/or “no stamina restrictions” in the accessibility menu if you want to. This does not disable achievements or rewards of any kind, so if you are struggling and just want to keep enjoying the game, there is no reason not to!
Thank you for this
They also recently added an easy combat mode
There is now a "reduced" difficult mode.
@@223rockmaster even in reduced mode, first-trying bosses has felt very rewarding for me
Ps plus gang , where you at !!
This game looks really fun, definitely gonna check this out.
The art style and certain areas in the game look really pretty
If you have an xbox, it's free on game pass. Honestly though, after having played it for two days as of writing this, I'd say it's worth a normal game price if you already like old school Zelda games.
I've been looking forward to this game since it was first revealed at E3 like 5 years ago or something.
Same here
Same😂
Same 😊

This comment unlocked a memory
To think Tunic was created by a single person, very inspirational to a fellow solo developer
WAUW!
Reminds me a lot of The Witness - and not only for that reason, but also in its game design. These indie devs deserve serious credit for fulfilling their visions to such a masterful degree.
Soli developer with some freelancer
Once you see credits. You will see he had some additional help.
Stardew valley
Correction, there are difficulty options, in the accessibility options menu.
Uhhh unless u mean the no fail mode no there isn’t
Was looking for a relaxing game after beating Elden Ring... guess this aint it LOL
Was thinking the exact same thing. Definitely excited to play this....after I've cooled down from 120 hours of elden ring.
Lmaooooo
deaths door bro trust
Deaths door is amazing
I'd recommend Night in the Woods if you've never played. Great art and writing, and is a real 'stop and smell the roses' kinda game.
Masterpiece of game design and environmental storytelling. If you happen to be reading the comment before watching, do not watch this review as it contains a ton of spoilers.
Well damn
Thank you!
Thanks for the warning
Thanks dude, never heard of it. Looks awesome!!!
The level design and sense of discovery is amazing in this game. Haven't felt this sense of discovery since Dark Souls.
This comment alone is the biggest selling point for me. Might have to pick it up, especially now that it’s on sale
Eyyy, congratulations to Andrew and his team. This was a very satisfying positive review to hear. Well done all; been pulling for you.
Team? This was all done by Andrew.
@@John-bj1zx Andrew did a great job. I’m a fan. There was a point when he was on Discord and mentioned gratitude to his distributor, his composer, and help that he had received with play-testing, debugging, or such like tasks. Possibly a bit of marketing outreach.
No one operates in a vacuum. Whosoever helped him make this game happen deserves credit.
Who the hell is Andrew?
@@bobafett5029 Who the hell is Din Djarin and why is the best part of your own tv show about him?
@@irmese06 lmao yeah, actually in the Mandalorian more almost
Glad this is being offered on ps+.
One of the most memorizing game I’ve played within a few years. The level design and the uniqueness of overall vibe, such a brilliant game.
most slept in game this year easily one of the best
The legend of zelda: the fox awakening
Its not even subtle is it lol.
Thats no really a bad thing
This game has been on my radar for quite some time. Glade to see it being well received!!
Did you just show me all the bosses and a bunch of other spoilers?
Let’s go, Xbox knocking it out of the park. Last year we had Deaths Door. Such a 💎. This year, we get Tunic. Can’t wait to get home and pick this one up.
Thats on game pass?
@@jonsitoa yes
@@jonsitoa yes brother. The ID@Xbox trailers has it at the very end. Xbox, PC and Game Pass. Just not sure if that’s PC Game Pass as well. Either way, I’m picking it up on Steam for the Steam Deck and playing it through GP on the Series X.
@@jonsitoa yup downloading it now
@@carlosalvarado7887 It's on PC as well. Just played some.
Having just finished Elden Ring and was looking for something else to play after but also to scratch that itch, this game was perfect for it.
Gamepass continues to be the best deal in gaming
If you don’t like owning games then yes
@@GeorgeZimmermen EXACTLY
Collecting games is played out. Especially with most games needing internet in some capacity now anyway
@@GeorgeZimmermen with how much money you save, that's fine by me.
@@GeorgeZimmermen not all of us want to have games stacked on a shelf
Im loving the return to form RPG games with no quest logs, figure out on your own, harder fights. Should we thank FromSoft?
Gotta thank the legend of Zelda too, this seems like a great marriage of the two
This is quality. It deserves a proper physical release on as many formats as possible for everyone to enjoy
It most likely will
It probably will when it launches on the other platforms like PS4/5 and Nintendo Switch, at least that's the trend with these Xbox@ID indies
So it's just on xbox?
No physical, no buy!
@@GeorgeZimmermen feel the same way here. No physical, no buy.
Feels like forever since this game was revealed
Can’t wait to try it out!
After 5 years! Tunic, Death's Door, and Blue Fire all in one!
💎 after 💎
@@carlosalvarado7887 all this games look promising 4 the gotys. Phil is on godspeed nd a key piece for the xbox. LMAO!
Blue fire?
@@trobriandstorm Crash Team Racing?
@@trobriandstorm Blue Fire is a 3D Platforming Adventure game made by Robi Studios that takes elements from both Legend of Zelda and Hollow Knight as well! Highly reccomend checking it out! ^^
This game is phenomenal the secrets in the game are 😮 crazy can’t recommend it enough!!!
"nearly all the games dialogue is written in an undecipherable language", except that's just plain false, it is possible to decipher it, though not necessary to complete the game. It's yet another tier of secret that the hardcore players can enjoy post-game.
Another lie, the game is always saved, not only at shrines. You can leave at any time and rejoin and keep all your progress, though your exact spawn position may change.
Lastly, while there's no difficulty settings for combat, there is an accessibility option to become invincible, if you're not enjoying a really difficult boss.
Randomly stumbled upon this and gonna love everything about it from the looks of things, really hope it comes to PS4 soon.
It will take probably around 3 months, I'm waiting for Nobody Saves the World to come to ps
out in two days 27/9 incase you didnt see it
Just got a series x for my bday todayfrom my amazing wife and this is def one of the first games I’m picking up, thanks to NintendoCapriSun for showcasing this one.
There are definitely a lot of mechanics similar to those you'll find in Elden Ring, but this game has been equally fun and challenging. Not to mention adorable!
lol yea hit and roll and die.... thats about it
Yeah finding our porpose and way in this game are harder and confusing than doing hundred hours of deadly journey in Elden Ring's open world.
Dodging attacks by rolling is so hot right now.
installing it right now, remind me of the days of zelda four swords so ill be playing this game without a doubt
Can't wait to play this, if you guys like this, I'd recommend tails of iron as well, that's a side scrolling indi souls like game with a cute protagonist and all voiced by geralt of rivia!
That game is amazing! The combat is so satisfying and the plot is cool!
looks and plays a lot like Death’s door!
beat me to it. and death's door was awesome!
It’s a Zelda like game. Also like deaths door is.
@@Arjay82 this game was in developpements before death door
@@Arjay82 you’re just talking to talk. You’re wrong 😂
Tunic is much easier. Death doesn’t really have any consequences except you lose progress if you didn’t save. But nothing else.
why in the world would you spoil the final boss in a review
Could tell this game was something a bit special from the demo alone
Where does this take place in the Zelda timeline?
SO a Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past-ish meets Dark Souls-ish. Nice.
There is in fact a combat setting. Easy, normal, hard. 5 seconds in the settings would show that.
What's the tune during the beginning of the review?
There are a lot of Zelda clones out there. This looks like a very great one. Looking forward to playing this tunic game. Plus link wears a tunic and so does this fox.
This is definitely not a clone. There is so much more there
@@raph2550 Tehre's a souls mechanic too
@@oxob3333 two if you count the dodge rolling
There are a lot of game clones out there indeed. It's like sometimes people make things similar to what they enjoy and inspires them. What a tragedy.
You sure there are no difficulty settings (4:34)? Other reviews showed both infinite stamina and infinite health options.
another W for game pass as usual
saying the game is hard is an overstatement.
I'd put it at the medium difficulty in my oppinion.
One thing of advice playing the game: hug walls as much as possible!
[Note: This game does not use a mouse, if you feel uncomfortable playing without a mouse this game will be a lot harder]
Looks great, but how long is it?
Just finished it wow its fantastic the sound track is beautiful aswel .
4:33 Is that the Moonlight Greatsword?!
If you liked Death’s Door you’ll definitely dig this one. Great review!
Can you not put major spoilers in the review? The miasma in the fast travel area is huge, and it's in the first minute.
I'm so glad this turned out to be great. Definitely thought we had another long in development dud on our hands. Here's to Gotham Knights not sucking🥂
it was so awesome that it was at the store the moment they revealed it was hitting gamepass... instantly downloaded from my phone to my xbox S
Is the game playbale with keyboard and mouse?
What's the background music
Can't get over how beautiful this game is
This game has the type of soundtrack I’ll listen to befitting falling asleep, it’s just so calming
Bro they even got a boss wielding the Moonlight Greatsword.
It’s also available on Gamepass!
Awesome, thank you so much for this review, will give it a try.
Reminds me so much of Death's door. Might just pick this up
It does have difficulty options under accessibility, at least per Gamespot.
yah, they probably should've mentioned that.
This game is so pretty 🥰 lovely mid week Gamepass surprise
If it has memorable music, I'm sold
Thank you for the 60fps review ❤️
Available on Game Pass for XBOX
Awesome!
But definitely gonna wait for a Switch release. Indie games just feel more at home on Switch.
Lol
That's incredibly dumb.
yh same. playing while in train or in bed.
Get it on steam deck then ez
@@Blue-bv1ur too heavy. never seen anyone using it too.
just downloaded this last night, and on the series x is very pretty and it can get pretty hairy with the combat
Buying this next time it's on sale on steam. It looks fantastic.
Why would you show the final boss battle in this review?
What happened to only showing early areas. You guys showing everything in the game in the review.
One of the best games I've ever played. The concept of finding the instruction booklet is genius, even though it only helps a bit.
This def should have won indie game of the year - there's so much more game here than Stray
But stray has cat
Tunic was indeed made into a plushie!
Yes thank you for the it’s on game pass moment
Hahaha xbox got no AAAs
@@TheNivektube imagine still doing the console wars thing. 🙄
@@TheNivektube pathetic console war fanboy.
@@iraford5788 emmm it's there, even on PC Game Pass
@@TheNivektube this is an indie game and still has better metacritic than ps AAA sad generation for pony boys. Especially when Stanfield takes GOTY your tears fuel us constantly.
I'm playing this on Game Pass and got completely caught off guard by the fact that there's barely any legible words in this game. For some reason that made the experience even better
4:20 oh oh.. and you play with a controller.. an obvious nod to Pong.. and umm.. there's a sword in the game, and obvious nod to Dragons Lair.. and umm umm.. there's achievements, an obvious nod to the first game to have achievements.
Not only one of the best indie games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing, but one of the best games I’ve ever played period!
Does Tunic have auto pop? Anyone know??
Every review now always has to reference some other game. Don't think reviewers now would know how to review without mentioning another game.
Wasn't expecting it to be so hardcore.
looks fantastic and available on Xbox gamepass , amazing
It’s a 9
Reminds me of secret of mana with the sword and the whip for jumping..
This does look a bit challenging, but not too overwhelming. That one shadow ghost looking enemy...with how it's arm stretched at Tunic in the narrow dungeon reminded me a bit of one of the enemies in Hades. Where they would stretch out a tile or so to be able to head butt you.
The bosses are challenging, but the overall game is easy to follow except on a few small parts
Not a single reference to Death's Door, which is more similar in terms of combat and looks, but as usual Dark Souls comparisons in every review lol
The first thing that came to mind to me was Death's Door lol. But this looks much better.
It’s on game pass, had to look up a review before downloading. Can’t wait to play lol.
Game was fun until the area that has crystals that drain your health to 1 HP. On top of that it disorients you and slows you down. Also the enemies can one shot snipe you from across the screen.
Found the gas mask that stops the crystals.
So the game is so hard that it makes it not fun?
@@BkBk-gy6vr its not that hard, when you beat a hard enemy its really satisfying but you can usually beat stuff after a couple of tries
At the last boss, you got to beat her twice. Get out of here.
Totally easy zone. If you come in the right way, unlock the shirt cut paths, reset. And then go through the short cut you just unlocked.
Seeing games like this or Sea of Stars that were made by very small teams makes me wonder what the hell is going on with AAA game studios. 99% of their games are released in buggy states, feel half finished, or are just pretty to look at without much substance behind it. Maybe they should start taking notes from the indie developers
Tunic made me cry in many ways. A warm surprise of creativity, immersion, tradition, puzzle solving and a deep message.
It made me cry because this is a LOVE LETTER to high quality game design. Period.
When will it come to Switch?...
Love how it was made in Halifax Nova scotia
Feels like some Fez influence in there as well.
Played it a year ago on switch it’s amazing
Cant wait to play this on the switch.
It’s not on switch it’s on Steam deck
where are the ubi UIs?
I’ll just wait for it come onto the switch
Hopefully they release this game on switch like they did with ori
Just waiting for the inevitable switch physical
This actually looks like a lot of fun.

Comparison to Death's Door?
Was already interested in this game, but after hearing this review, it really sounds to be something special...
This game is truly amazing and the closest us non Nintendo gamers will get to a Legend of Zelda game.
