Eurasian wryneck or northern wryneck (Jynx torquilla)

The Eurasian wryneck is a very interesting bird. It lets out a terrifying head shake in all directions, which sometimes gives the impression that it can turn it around and around. It's the only one of our woodpecker family that migrates to tropical Africa for the winter.
However, in this video, we're going to look at the way it nests. It prefers to nest in cavities in old fruit trees in neglected orchards. He doesn't seal the cavities himself. He does not build a nest and lays his eggs directly on the bottom of the cavity. If the cavity has previously been used by another bird species for nesting, the cuckoo lays its eggs on the remains of the old nest. Sometimes it also drives the original nesting birds out of the cavity and throws out the eggs, chicks and nest. However, nest trees are in desperately short supply in our current landscape, so it will not find a suitable cavity, nor will it disdain a birdhouse. As a pair of Eurasian wrynecks can raise up to 12 young if they have enough food, they have to be very careful when feeding them. They feed their young mostly on ant larvae, but as you can see in our box, they also feed on snails. Spotting this inconspicuous bird is much more difficult than hearing its shrill call. If you hear it, it may nest in your area. Don't cut down all the old nest trees in the surroundings. If there are no more nesting trees in your area, put up birdhouses.
And finally, I'll tell you where a couple of nuthatches have chosen a cavity. The cavity is in an old apple tree on a very busy road. That explains the occasional image shake when a truck or larger car passes right by. It was quite an adrenaline rush for me and my colleague.
I can't help but wish the youngsters good luck in leaving the hollow. Hopefully the parents will point them in the right direction.

Jak velká budka a s jak velkým otvorem by byla vhodná pro krutihlava? Děkuji za info :)

Dobrý den. Jelikož si krutihlav netesá dutiny, tak je odkázán na již hotové dutiny. Pokud jich je v okolí nedostatek vezme za vděk i budkami pro sýkory. Dovede se protáhnout i otvorem 32 mm. Vhodnější jsou ale poněkud větší otvory o průměru 34 - 45 mm. hloubka budky okolo 30 - 35 cm. Takže velikost budek asi jako pro špačka. Pokud bude budka z hoblovaných prken nezapomeňte zevnitř zdrsnit (nebo vyrýt rýhy) stěnu s výletovým otvorem, aby se mláďata, až přijde čas, mohla vyšplhat ven. Budku nemusíte věšet vysoko, stačí i 1,5 m. Budku pověste na okraj listnatého lesa, remízku či parku a na dno budky nasypte trochu pilin, hoblin nebo trouchu, protože krutihlav si hnízdo v dutině nestaví, tak aby se mu vejce nekutálela po dně budky. Pokud máte ve vašem okolí nedostatek dutin a vyskytují se tam krutihlavové, Tak máte šanci, že vaši budku obsadí. Držíme palce 🙂
