This video was great, and as a girl, a wife, a stay at home mom, and a bedroom guitarist, my biggest issue wanting to see a group was that I had few to no female friends that wanted anything to do with metal or guitar. You get looked at awfully funny recommending a prog metal band with a twenty odd minute song versus the Backstreet Boys 🤣
Tbh as a male fan of industrial and bedroom musician myself, I have the same problem with my friends :) I have attended almost all the gigs by myself.

Simps abound
As a girl, woman and former active musician, I don't really feel the need to travel in a girl posse to go to a show. I like going by myself. I like the independence. My husband doesn't like to go to shows, because everyone is so shooty down here. I can't say as I blame him. I just make sure I check out the exits. It's a shame one even has to consider the possibility. If you ever want to go to a metal show, @Lauren Cook, let me know!
The bass player in my first punk band couldn't even remember half the songs we played, but he did work as a lifeguard, and got totally nude on stage every show, that certainly expanded our audience.
that's why you must carefully monitor the bass player, he probably ate the wrong crayons and was tripping balls in more ways then one.

@@sthn8758 Crayola is the best product for the money but do be wary that your bassist might become dissatisfied with it. If you do not add variety, I would recommend picking up a 96 pack or if you feel like treating him to something special, maybe a metallic flake?
Saw what you will about Nirvana, but I can tell you that the ever so infamous clip of Kurt Cobain stopping the show so he could keep a girl from being sexually harassed absolutely won some hearts for the band. That kind of care for not just the audience but also the part of the audience that can't defend themselves as easily as others is real showmanship. It's one thing if you don't catch that kind of thing happening at your show, but when you do, call that shit out.
Dave Mustaine has done this as well, although he will stop the show for many reasons

I think there’s enough to be said about musicians who don’t take time to look presentable or be social with the audience before and after shows. Being entertaining is definitely important, if not most important. It’s also important to look good, SMELL GOOD, and feel good to be around. Maybe we could get a video on proper musician etiquette or something like that? Not very metal I guess, but idk.
That smell good line struck a chord with me. My band were playing middle-spot, I went into the green room after the first band came off-stage and one of the members was so on the bugle (stinky) that I had to leave the room immediately and only went back in once they left. We then did our set, and when I was watching the last band I noticed that every member of that first band were sitting in separate parts of the venue. Not one of them wanted anything to do with any of the others. It was hilarious.
Social skills and networking are vital for every musician. Showering and wearing deodorant is vital for every person on the planet
I usually let the rest of the band be social. I have social anxiety but somehow not performance anxiety
I imagine it can get super sweaty under those lights. Might not be a bad idea to catch a quick shower after the show before mingling with the crowd, as well.
@@spencerific93 no imagining to it...after 45 minutes under the lights i looked like i stepped out of a shower and sure didn't smell like it lol...most clubs around atl didnt have a place to shower so we loaded out smelly
The night after you posted this a band full of fat guys with neck beards, cut off camo shorts, and some cannibal corpse tshirts got on stage and made all the girls leave to go to a dance club. The bass player inevitably said to a random dude at the bar: "our local scene sucks"

many women are also technical experts and appreciate that stuff.
i think its an issue with many individuals in the culture being condescending, unwelcoming, degrading and hostile towards women and femininity (not to mention nonwhite culture, queerness, people different sizes and shapes, etc). equally as deterring is and other men turning a blind eye to this streak, and not questioning it and standing up against it. shows are definitely great when theyre great, but the bad bits of the culture are horrible.
Contrast is king when it comes to complicated music, if you have 100 solos one after another it just becomes white noise. A great example of this is dimebag Darrell. He was able to play incredibly technical stuff but usually decided to use fairly basic riffs for like 80% of the song, focusing more on rhythm and general mood. That way when his solos did come they were far more memorable and stood out more. Nothing wrong with technical playing, just needs contrast to make it not sound stagnant. If you start off doing 100% you have no where else to go, which means the rest of the song is pointless
That's a great point! Same went for Van Halen, Scorpions, Black Label society, etc
Maybe this is applicable on Vulgar Display of Power or Trendkill where the riffs are as you say "basic". The riff work on Cowboys From Hell and even pre CFH records like Power Metal were anything but "basic".
@@rembrandtdavinci6410 I don't mean basic in an objective sense, I mean basic in comparison to the most technically difficult peak of the song. On cowboys from hell he isn't going 100% of his ability at all time, he has diversity which makes the song feel like its moving and not stagnant.

Polyphia would be another example for this. All in 4/4, first comes a catch melody and simple chord progression, make it sounds cool and mix some great genres together and garnish with some flex in between the meat and potatoes. 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify with instrumental guitar music. More than twice as much as Steve Vai.
As someone who started playing live shows, I learned a TON about stage presence and showmanship from watching Jeff Rosenstock, Green Day, and Judas Priest. If you’re struggling with your performance skills, watching great performers is a great way to get better. It doesn’t matter if their music is nothing like yours, you can always learn from the habits and mannerisms of great performers. HELL YEAH!

But actually, though. Billie Joe Armstrong is one of the greatest frontmen of all time and Green Day is generally understood as one of the best live bands ever. Any metalhead who thinks they’re above learning anything from them “because they’re just pop punk” is intentionally keeping themselves from obtaining more knowledge to improve their live show

When I sang for a band, it made me just a little bit of a douche bag; for whatever reason, this was received positively by the audience. The acknowledgement that I had some real talent gave me level of self-confidence I had never experienced before. A whiff of impertinence here, a dab of arrogance there, and suddenly I was getting more attention from the opposite sex than I'd ever had in my life. I was getting laughs when I cracked jokes or hurled abuse at dickheads in the audience. I'm far from anyone's ideal picture of physical beauty, but a little charisma goes a long way.

@@adrienneraeash3440 This is actually fairly realistic, much like your fantasies of this exact thing, which is why you think OP is cap.
One thing to add: when performing, be genuine. Many people, me included, can tell when the singer or whomever is merely pretending to be happy to be there while they try to visibly revel in their music. It can be pretty obvious. Instead, dig deep and fine true onstage joy. Doesn’t matter what genre you play, just let the love you feel for your music pour out of you. People, women included, will react positively.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. I also needed to hear it. As a guitar player who loves technically proficient guitar players just as much as good songwriting, I often struggle writing songs because I'm afraid my riffs aren't cool enough or technical enough. We need to be reminded that the vast majority of music listeners ARE NOT musicians. And seeing how I can't stand most other guitar players, I shouldn't worry about impressing them
This is why I've never been a gear snob. The vast majority of your audience doesn't give a shit about what brand of guitar you're playing. I played a Frankenstein made from an el-cheapo guitar and decent pups and electronics. Looked like shit, but I [still] like the way it plays. I had a few people over the years give me snide remarks, but I just smile and do my own thing.
3 chords is all you needed to get laid back in the day.
If you enjoy playing, who cares what some else thinks. You'll find your audience.
I'm a bass player for 30 years, keyboards for 47 years. I started playing 6 string 2 years ago. I'm not good at guitar, I can play cowboy chords and solo around in 5 positions of minor pentatonic. Ppl that listen to my music (home recording solo project) have no clue I'm bad at guitar because they can't play a C chord on a piano.
Most ppl are completely clueless about music technical shit. Most ppl will tell you - "I like all kinds of music," and "I know what I like," etc . . . Because they're essentially clueless about music. Most ppl are impressed if you can make a chord change without fret buzz.
Also you can still add licks and leads in sections.

As a woman in the metal scene, here are my thoughts: 1.) Stop bathing in your cologne. It's meant to be discovered, not announced. Also, it doesn't cover up your odor, it just adds to it. 2.) Stop acting like you know what women like. We're literally all different people with different tastes, attitudes, values, etc. 3.) "Name 3 songs" when I'm wearing a band shirt isn't helping your case, at all lol

Once in London before a FOTN show I got 'tested' by an obviously jealous male " friend "of my then girlfriend......

And told him I didn't have a favourite song. But proceeded to Troll him by namechecking an album that hardcore older fans hate as my favourite......

This is basically a list of everything I have learned over thirty years of live playing! Sometimes a three chord song works!
Wish people would realise, there is nothing inherently wrong with a 3 chord song, there's a reason they're so popular. Most live show staples for many bands are, just that. A simple, 3 chord anthem.
it does more often then not. easy to remember and easy to dance to, add a splash of charisma and a bit of gall.
Status Quo sold a few hundred million records over a half century with 3 chord songs.
Let’s not forget the obvious one here: AC/DC making an entire career out of using mainly 3 or 4 chords

Whether people admit to it or not, the female audience are some of the most rabid and loyal fanbase there is. Once you hook them in, they'll love you unconditionally (except when you do questionable and horrible things-please don't do this). Have you seen boy band fanbases? Even after the band has broken up, fandoms are still alive and running. So guys, better keep them in or else, only judgemental musicians would kind of listen to you at the gig before they dismiss your music as "derivative" after the show
That's the way it is. I haven't started watching this video yet but I saw your comment. Women are our biggest fan base almost always. When I was single I had my choice I would usually pick 3 and tell a security guard those three girls are allowed backstage. I had so much fun back in those days I'm surprised I'm still alive. These days I have me Cara Mia and I work by myself in my studio when I feel like it. I've been in a lot of bands but I haven't played with a band since covid started. Maybe I'll do it again someday but also I'm capable of doing it on my own and I don't want mi Cara Mia to get jealous of other girls. Have slowed down in my life a bit. The culinary arts pay better and I like coming home to mi Cara Mia.

My impression of pop bands is that they quickly go out of fashion, and their (mostly female) fans are fickle. ps are there any ugly male musicians who are popular with girls?
When the Jonas Brothers toured again, about 4 years back, no less than 4 of my female coworkers from 23 to 40 were at the show in Louisville.
A great example of a metal band Glenn refers to whom can write great "songs" AND uses "theatrics" is GHOST. Ghost have figured out a great formula for balancing song writing and stage presence. It's literally a modern day mashup of Alice Cooper and Def Leppard.
A lot of bands figured it out:
Queensryche, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, KISS. Hell, KISS had it down to an art that made it's fans mimic their appearance at every show, both male AND female.
The irony is that so many people go into metal/bands 'to get girls' and it's become such a guys club of elitists and other musicians.
I'm not a metal / rock musician, although I come from a rock background. And you're right, as usual Glenn.
I saw Frank Zappa live three times. He was playing the weirdest most complex music ever - but he knew how to work a crowd. One example: at the beginning of the second time I saw him live, the drummer and bass player came out and laid down a groove. The rest of the band came out and joined them, playing an amazing instrumental. Then Zappa came out. He wore a red jumpsuit and played a red Les Paul. He went into one of the most face-melting guitar solos I ever heard. The music became more and more intense, then just as it became completely insane, suddenly the band laid out, the drummer and bass played the same groove, but real quiet, and Zappa went up to the mic and said "Hi there!" The crowd went nuts. Then he said "My name is Frank, and this is my hobby!"
I saw Blue Oyster Cult in 1978 (I think). The stage lights went down, and everything was quiet and dark. And it stayed like that for a long time. The audience was getting agitated. Suddenly. when the tension became unbearable, five flash pods the size of gallon paint cans by the edge of the stage went off with a blinding flash and a deafening crack. The first 20 rows were blown back into their seats. Then Eric Bloom walked on stage, grabbed a mic, and shouted "ON YOUR FEET, OR ON YOUR KNEES!!!" The show got better from there.
I saw a lot of bands who really put on great shows: Accept, Twisted Sister, Jane's Addiction, Ice T, Public Enemy, Living Colour, The Butthole Surfers (who I first saw in 1983 in New York City - they were seriously intense!). And I could name a lot of local people who are great performers.
Even a lot of jazz concerts I attended put on a good show. When I was doing jazz gigs, I was amazed how many jazz musicians dressed like bums, had zero stage presence, and played insufferably self-indulgent crap nobody wanted to hear unless they were trying to prove how "deep" they are. They didn't take any lessons from Miles Davis. I saw him live; he had THE BEST stage presence of almost anyone I ever saw. There was something truly mysterious about The Prince of Darkness.
I ALWAYS make sure I delivered good stage presence. Even if I was sitting in a chair playing quiet, introspective music that a metal audience would not really enjoy, I always tried to connect with the audience. There's no way to overstate the importance of this!

I know its often said to appeal to the female audience as they'll normally drag their partner along, but I've also always thought musicians who cater for children are probably the craftiest musicians around - if young children want to come and see your show, guess what? At least one adult has to come too - 2 tickets for every 1 fan? Thank you very much :)
Honestly, if I was in a band my first objective would be to write the music I want to hear. If people like it than that's great, but I won't do anything to attract any demographic. My attitude is everyone is welcome along for the ride. If more dudes like our music than women, that's fine, but women are always welcome. My taste is more on the extreme side, so I fully expect more guys would be into it.
Yeah, true. Quite frankly, I think if you're getting into music for the sole purpose of attracting women, you're doing it for the wrong reason. It should only ever come from and love and passion for music.

Do you make a living off of your music?
I remember an old interview from one of those 80's thrash compilation VHS tapes w/ Overkill, where it was either Bobby or D.D. who made the joke "What has 10,000 legs and 8 tits? An Overkill show"
It's really enlightening to see how different my band mates back in the day and non musicians view music. Plenty of people with no knowledge of keys or chords or scales love heavy music. They don't care about all the stuff musicians obsess over, they just want to rock out.
Back in the day I played in many bands from punk, new wave, thrash, prog, to death, but the most fun, the most gigs, the most money, and most women was when I played in a hair metal band.
4/4, 3-4 chords, simple riffs, short leads, we looked the part (tall, fit, thin, big hair and "lip service" stretch jeans), audience engagement, smile, laugh and have fun and we made it fun for the audience. We played to and for the women, and it worked for us.
Best nights were when we played ladies nights where the women got drink discounts and reduced or free cover (entry fee). When the places were full of women the guys showed up too, and paid full price.
That's how you pack club, and get on regular circuit rotation. We had several clubs we'd play 1-2 times a month, usually booked 3-4 nights a week, more in the summers, and had a regular following at each club.

This has got to be the best info vid for bands and musicians. I have played in so many bands that have no entertainment factor about them. Some of the people I've worked with you could draw a circle around and they would not have moved out of it for the whole night. I'm a drummer/singer of 43 years and the amount of times that people have come up to me and said ' wow dude, why are you with these guys? You are the only person here trying to put on a show.' The audience is the most important element and bands should be as entertaining as possible. I hope this video reaches all the glued to the floor, staring at their fret board, watching the TV while they play but very talented musicians. I'm sharing this video on all my social media channels. Chicks used to come to our shows. I don't think they really ever read the venues to see who was playing. They just poured in because band members. The '80s were great. :D

One thing I will say just from the perspective of being in an area where almost every venue is like you described: Literally just do anything possible to play a show. Period.
Those venues in “the bad part of town” still have an audience. The feature video on my channel was in one of those and it was a great audience. Be realistic. If you think you’re in danger, leave or don’t go. (Quick edit, it’s still just mostly people just living their lives. You’re going to have to play more than just one place in your area regardless).
One place I play at regularly has port-o-potties (it’s a DIY venue in a backyard) and I’ve built connections there and women do enjoy it.
Those are the places you have to play before going to a frat bar that occasionally wants to take a chance on having live music.
And then the 800-cap club and 150-cap club that gets signed national acts near me always has shit bathrooms.
And then if you ever tell your wife or girlfriend “don’t come to my gig” that just makes you sound like red flags are getting waived.
When women see photos of other women at bars, they’re more likely to show up the next time. Good bars post those photos for a reason.
If your girlfriend doesn’t trust you if you talk to someone after your set, that’s a whole different issue you should deal with.
real metal is played at house/DIY venues
@@phillymopwater The one I play at frequently is in the backyard of a trailer. They have a real strict no-moshing policy because they don’t want anyone to get hurt and also they have a sick fire pit they don’t want any dumb drunk to fall into.
Another DIY venue I play at sometimes is in a storage unit in a not-great area. But really what determines the crowd is if they want to be in a storage unit without air conditioning.
Great venues regardless.
The first one I mentioned is getting more recognition and is being considered similar to other outdoor venues near me
I work at a small concert venue and I've seen a lot of crowds. One thing I've noticed, and I think this goes with #1, is that when the artist just flaps their gums on stage turns people off. Like we came to see music not a TED Talk lol
This needs to be higher. A joke here or there is OK. A badly performed stand-up comedy act isn't, even if you are a comedy band - and I've seen this from local small bands. Not to mention local nobodies trying to preach to their audience or hit on girls from the stage.

I play in a progressive ROCK band (not metal), and believe it or not, our audience is about 40% female. I attribute that to 2 things: 1. we have diverse and somewhat interesting songs (yes, in a prog rock band) and 2. We don't just stand there and stare at our guitars. Our vocalist/rhythm guitar player is stuck behind a microphone and a waist-level pedalboard/synth rack, so the bass player and I (lead guitar) make the show entertaining by moving around, posing (lots of cameras out there), and being animated. It's not hard, and after a few shows, we REALLY get into it. We live for the show!

SELL OUT FIRST. Problem solved. Make music people like and you earn the right to include the occasional oddball, like Roger Waters' "Money" in 7/8 time, or Scorpions "China White", which I still don't know what the f--- it is but it sounds amazing.
That long technical song intro belongs at track #5 on your third album after you've shown the listeners that they can trust you to take them somewhere interesting.
Take the Beth Hart approach where genres don't matter. Led Zeppelin, Bon Jovi and the singer for Tool have at least one country song. Black Sabbath claimed to be a blues band with a jazz drummer. I doubt an act could be labeled a sell out if they perform 3+ different genres at every gig.
You can have your Cygnus and Hemispheres, but you've gotta have some What You're Doing and Fly By Night first, and work your way through Caress of Steel. And you may find yourself having Tai Shan in the future as well, so tread wisely.

Rush, Pink Floyd, Zappa, etc. are legendary because they wrote some of the most classic songs in rock music in general.
Knowingly or not, your advice is the most valuable in this entire thread. It also makes a great case for getting a live act EARLY IN YOUR musical journey as opposed to later.

Hi Glenn. I love your show even though I'm not that much of a metal guy. I used to play full time for a living and if I wasn't doing that I was running sound for other bands. I'm not rich or famous, but I did get to work with a lot of famous musicians over the years. You gave some great advice here. I would add that most bands probably need to work on endings and beginnings. End one song and jump right into the next song. The other thing is dynamics. Getting louder and softer is another tool to recapture your audience's attention. Those are two areas were most bar bands are weak compared to the pros. Keep the good work Glenn!

I always say - it doesn't matter how complicated music is. Does it sound good? Is it entertaining? Does it make you feel things? If yes, it is good. That is all that matters in music.
The problem with complexity is also this: All those super fancy complicated riffs or overdone harmonies you pull off in the studio, in most cases will not translate well live. If your music is only good if the mix is perfect and it is played perfectly, you're in trouble. in a loud live gig, in most cases, it will sound like an incomprehensible loud mess, that is only understood by those who listen to your records.
The challenge is to write music that translates well outside of the recording.
It's criminal how overlooked that is. There are tons of very heavy and complex bands that I adore, but every time I saw them live, the music sounded more like white noise than anything else.
No matter how good the venue, the gear or the playing, I stand by my opinion that some music just doesn't translate well live except for the ideal conditions you mentioned, which are met in like 0.001% of the cases. I literally found my brain having to "autocorrect" the songs for them to sound good to me, yet I've never heard anyone point this out.
People don’t realize that live music came before recording. So to be good at recording and not at live makes no sense.

If you went to see virtually any metal band in the 1980's you were going to a SHOW, it was a great time for live music....
I played a show recently at the Bovine in Toronto - not a huge turnout, maybe 30 people on a Thursday, but a fairly even split between men and women. As we were nearing the end of our set, a circle pit broke out, and when I looked out, nearly all the women were in the pit, while the dudes all just stood around on the outside and watched. It was super fun to see and be a part of, so if the future of the scene is through women, I'm here for it! Happy to do whatever it takes to make shows more accessible and accommodating for them!
I have never seen more sloppily drunk women in one place as I have at the Bovine. (My band was banned from the Bovine about a decade ago and I still laugh about it.)

I needed to hear #4, I was tired of my post hardcore music sounding like pop punk so I started trying to get more technical. You made me realize I was trying to fix something that wasn't broken, the formula I have for making music is simple and effective.
As a case study, look at Steel Panther. I don't care if you like their music or not, but it is a demonstrable fact that they ALWAYS have a zillion women at their shows (and often on stage) and it's because they do every one of these things. Consistently. They put on a show in multiple senses of the word AND their music has both the groove and craftsmanship to get the entire crowd interested.
Bands like Braindrill or Viraemia have their time and place, but they will never be more than niche artists. If you truly want to expand your audience and simultaneously appeal to more ladies, cut the bullshit and heed the advice in this video.

Thanks for this one Glenn. I myself have a blowtorch of critique at my hip at all times, so I can take it. I'm a prog nerd at heart, but I also dig the popular things. This clarifies the audience capture thing I've found so elusive. Indeed, as soon as I get a full room with at least as many women as men I go scary and progressive with too much concern for my inner tizzy to sense what the crowd could take. Then it blows them away, and...a few dudes still follow me. Not enough to fill a closet.
WHEREAS when I'm just being a part of the group and adapting my flow to the habitat that forms and rarely leading, except those moments when the band has caught my drift and they follow my signals to uplift, half time, fade out, or pull the plug even if it's my flute the satisfaction of the quality of the experience uplifts my heart. We have elders and young in the group, even an elder woman who plays a keyboard. We jam in a park. Women introduce us to their children. It's great medicine and further training for this aging prog nerd to feel more satisfaction in the quality of the experience instead of always seeking to bring a prefab structure to bear on a live situation. Our group is a freight train when it gets a strong groove going. Then they don't take my lead and I can have fun doing whatever noise comes to me in the moment and the train keeps rolling.

Would really love a video with a deep dive of the things that you think make a good band performance. Studying the greats and trying to bring the flavor and would love some extra tips.
Performance is so important. I learned that off my old dad who plays bluegrass. He said if people are giving him $20 for a 2 hour gig, he's gonna make sure they get their money worth by being thoroughly entertained. The band have matching cowboy suits, they have all their onstage banter worked out in advance , theres always comical shit going on onstage and yes he can play the shit out of that banjo. This is always true, by the way. No exceptions, your being paid, so do the fucking job and entertain. The Sex Pistols could barely hold their instruments the right way around but Johnny rotten and the boys where so entertaining just watchintg a band of absurd maniacs tear the stage limb to limb was worth the price of admission, and despite their lack of virtuosity they are STILL remembered for their shows, nearly 50 years later. Your an entertainer, so entertain.
Actually Cook was a solid drummer, Jonesy a very tight guitar player and Matlock was pretty decent bass player. They said they couldn't play but......they already had a few tricks up their sleeve before forming as the Pistols.
Vicious was the only one who had no idea what he was doing when he replaced Glenn Matlock.

It's funny that metalheads, mostly older ones, still tend to shit on metalcore and especially the scene kid stuff. Their brand of boyband pop with breakdowns (thanks Finn McKenty) was exactly what you described: fun songs with meaningful structure that made you wanna move, almost no soloing (unless you count deathcore and djent) and they often had pretty decent showmanship. And indeed, a lot of girls would show up to that stuff.
Because it's not about music it's about the performers
And that's why everyone hates this core bs. Fabricated and derivative. Every song, structure, and band is the same. It's short living fun.

Absolutely! That connects with the crowd early-on.
This pretty much all checks out. One of the biggest shocks for me with my band is just how many girls are consistently at our shows, outside of just our friends. We play traditional melodic heavy metal, and do our best to be really active on stage and they generally seem to love it. Our songs are all about dorky shit, we bring a sword out on stage, and our last show was like 50% girls, maybe even more.
Making people want to move is huge, too, doubly so with girls. One of my biggest goals as a songwriter is to make the listener want to move in as many different ways as possible. If you can make people want to circle pit, then stop the circle pit to dance, you've captivated them and given them a great time.

Re #2 - A good rockin' band can draw women to even a crappy venue. I remember seeing plenty of girls at L'Amour in Brooklyn-a smelly armpit of a club in a shitty neighborhood-when good spandex-sporting metal bands played there. CBGB was a total pisshole, but plenty of girls would go there to see a band like the Ramones, despite the fact that Joey looked like a Sleestak.

Hey Glenn, been lurking for a long time now. Great show, great advice all around. #5 in this list especially reached me. I live in a city that has a toxic local metal scene. Every scene has its shady characters and in the age of accountability, that shit just doesn't fly anymore. But it seems a lot of people haven't got the memo because they would rather protect their friends or bandmates than their audience. There are organizations here that have sprouted up to provide safer spaces to audience members when they find themselves in need of protection and even offer harm reduction services like drug testing and information as well as your typical protections like earplugs and condoms. It's run by volunteers and they're more than happy to provide the services at a non-profit rate, but for some reason, promoters in the metal scene just aren't interested. It's really quite sad and I hope it gets better. Anyway, keep banging out the amazing content.
I just saw Etheos "Metal band with a female singer". There were more girls there than I had ever seen at a Metal show. Most of the bands were so boring, same guitar tone, lame stage presence and playing to backing tracks. The latter has gotten to new levels of questionable musicianship. I think there might be a small community of females getting into more extreme types of music, as I see groups of them hanging together at shows.
There are a lot of great female musicians in Seattle, not just singers. I’ve noticed that also ups the draw of women in the audience.
I had a vet tell me once and it stuck with me. No matter what band you're in, if you don't attract women, you are leaving out half the human race. Too true.
Over the course of my long career I've had the opportunity to work with many talented musicians and singers, the best of whom (from an audience point of view) were also very charismatic. Case in point, the singer of the Blues band I'm currently in (all while I continue to perform as a solo artist or duo)... Not only is he a great singer but he also has bucketloads of charisma. Audiences absolutely love him. He can entertain a crowd as much with music as he can with stories and anecdotes. It makes for shows that are just as much fun to play as they are to watch and listen to as he keeps the crowd in the palm of his hand throughout. The importance of a great front man (or woman) cannot be overstated.

Not only does the scene have issues with gender, it lack diversity. Depending on where you live some scenes have strong neo con vibes. let’s face it, all the girls went to the EDM scene. That scene will eventually get over run by bros who will scare the girls away from that scene.

I found out a lot of this advice when I took a job in a cover band. I got paid way more, Laid way more, and it was way easier and sometimes way more fun. As much as I loved my metal project, the performance and environment have a huge factor for everyone. I did gain some appreciation for other genres as well and broke me out of some of my snobbery.
but all in all, Glenn is spot fucking on here.

Type O Negative is a good band to look at for this. The women folk loved them. In terms of modern bands women seem to like Ghost.
Type O Negative should be the masterclass in being accessable to Both sexes and being commercially viable while still credible.

7:22 Highly technical music and music you can dance to aren't mutually exclusive. I wish more metal musicians understood this. Beast in Black's music is highly technical, and yet it borrows a lot from 80s disco - you can dance to it, and it's awesome.
Also, a lot of young metal musicians just hide their musical incompetence behind being brutal - you know, ridiculously low tuning, chugging only on the upper strings, growling out of tune, a metric ton of distortion. I'm sorry, but this just isn't pleasant to listen to, even to people who like metal.
I'd disagree to a certain extent. If you want people to move to your music then it needs to be in 4/4. Most people can dance to 4/4. A few people can dance to 3/4 but not as many. If you pick a wanky signature like 17/16 nobody can. People don't necessarily know why but that 17th beat keeps throwing them off and it kills the buzz. I've seen dance floors cleared by stupid-arsed time signatures loads of times.
Rush fans may think that Tom Sawyer is the best thing since the invention of tits but everyone else is baffled by why they suddenly can't dance to it half way through.

I've been to a few shows with my wife so I have her perspective now. And most of what you say is stuff she's said. If the venue is disgusting she won't want to be there. If the bands songs are about ripping out a virgin's entrails she probably will pass on that show. My friends invited us to see a solo jazz guitar player in the city over. My wife who can't play a note has zero interest but the friends I'm going with are all musicians. Food for thought
