Start where everyone starts the Beatles! From there you can go forward or backwards. Thats what I did.

They should buy the first album I bought with my own money in Jan. 1981. "The Beatles 1967 - 1970" AKA "The Blue Album". A great way to start.

Physical Graffiti. That record has a bit of EVERYTHING. No matter what your tastes, that album will give you the impetus to seek out other music that gives you a similar vibe. For me, it's bound to awaken something in the person, a drive to hear more music that gives them that same feeling.

I think I'd recommend the first album I got... Michael Jackson's Thriller... you get 7 hit singles, Michael at the peak of his ability, one of the GOAT producers in Quincy Jones, the session musicians are Toto playing the music, Vincent Price, Paul McCartney on one song and an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo on another... plus he inspired so many other albums & artists from Prince, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd and the songs have been sampled into hits for Rihanna, Snoop, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas & Kanye = there's a reason it spent a record 37 weeks in a row at #1

I agree - I grew up and love 80's music & love metal but 60's music is the best in terms of timeless songwriting and musicianship - Motown, Phil Specter's Wall of Sound, The Wrecking Crew had session musicians who played 24/7, stayed out of the spotlight & distractions of tours & they were all professionals at their top of their craft.

Boston’s debut. It’s just awesomeness from start to finish, and a great introduction to guitar driven music.
Another choice for me would be Triumph Never Surrender. It’s got a good mix of hard rock and one mellower song.
    Then there’s always Kiss Alive.

I’m a big Mellencamp fan but trying to put that aside.. I do feel Scarecrow is a good starting point. It’s seems like. Good bridge/jumping point into a couple directions… R.O.C.K covers Motown and a listener might be like wow I want to learn about all the other artists mentioned in the song. There is also a pop feel to the songs, a rock feel to others, and the song writing is just so so good. It’s an album that I feel a majority of people can find something they like and can launch from

"New record collector" works better for me, and I can relate to it at this very moment, because my daughter just got her first turntable. She's been a music fan for many years, just not a collector of physical media. I'll probably give her a copy of 'Rubber Soul' or 'Revolver' for Christmas.

It is just a hypothetical question dude. When I was buying my first CDs with my pocket money as we called it in the 80s, I took advise from my older brother and a good friend. My first CD was Even Worse by Weird Al because of the song fat. I loved the music video. I am Australian and my first proper CD not parody was Big Bad Noise by Choir Boys. They are an Aussie Pub Rock Band. The song Run to Paradise is an 80s classic in Australia. I like these type of hypothetical games. Makes you think. I would not just go straight for recommending albums like Master of Puppets, Rust in Peace, Reign in Blood and Vulgar Display of Power. They are all masterpieces but not for newbies to music.

@@martinwhite3559 All young people are not the same, and in my experience, it’s rare to encounter someone of any age who dislikes/dismisses The Beatles. They tend to be really immature, closed-minded fans of shitty modern heavy music. She’s 26 and has good taste in music. I’m certain she’s heard Beatles songs but probably hasn’t listened to an entire album.

I'd like to recommend something new and fresh that still harks back to the day of yore. So, i'd recommend a Black Pumas album. They take a fresh approach to old-school soul and rock. I'm listening to the new live album now, and I think that album would be a good starting point. The production makes you feel like you're in the front row.

I think for me having also worked a long time in a Record Store I used to get the "what's good now" or "what would you recommend" and I have to find out where their head is. I got to know someone they know, I always make the person tell me an artist they like to get an idea. I mean because I would start saying Aerosmith Pump or Extreme 3 sides and someone is not going to want that right off the bat. I think a best of someone is a good way. I used to tell people who had no clue what they wanted but wanted new stuff, I sell them a NOW compilation because back then it had a variety of what was new, or even they tended to have Billboard comps from different years, its so hard to recommend or start someone with something that is subjective to everyone in certain ways.

I with Anthony, Yes start from the beginning. Zeppelin you must start there. Pink Floyd too. But depends on their vibe. Def Leppard as well On through the night was Awesome. Listen as the grow bands change as they reinvent their sounds. Most importantly what are they into. I personally loved my music appreciation teacher. She when through the very first of music then grew to modern music. There I found 1920's fox trots was fun. Then big bands as well. Tho I will always go to metal. But depends on my mood.

I think it would be good to start with a sampler or compilation that covers a few artists or genres and would allow the newbie to listen and give them various paths to follow. But if I had to recommend one album for rock, I would recommend either The Fleshtones - Hexbreaker or their later album Do You Swing? Raucous, catchy and formative. Modern with a nod to the past that would be a natural to start with.

this concept is too alien to me , how can somebody not know music , like music , or why if one does not care for music then explore music ?? ...., I mean I am kinda with Anthony in a way .., I mean I love blues , rock , metal .., but I think if I were to bite onto this subject , I would go classical something like Haydn The Seasons .., Pachelbel maybe ??
